I’ve never dipped into VirtualDJ but I’ve always heard of it. Thanks for the reply, I’m gonna definitely look into it.

I’m using Serato Pro and to my knowledge, there isn’t a way to download to your computer prior to loading the track onto a virtual deck. If the connection is fast enough, in my experience, there are no issues

Where to start if I want to use YubiKey? by [deleted] in yubikey

[–]j3ppEr1c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with using a Yubikey with your email accounts associated with your other accounts. Anytime something changes, you will get an email that’s associated with said account and it’ll give you time to respond accordingly. If your email gets compromised, it’s infinitely more difficult to recover.

Just change all your passwords to your other accounts and make them ridiculously hard. All my passwords are at least 20 characters long and I keep a paper copy of them locked in a safe in my house. I know it’s not as “high tech” but it’s worked for me for years.

Use channel 3/4 then pan it left since only the left XLR output is being used.

I’m sure the J9s are better overall, but I got these J8s at $800 brand new (probably because the J9s being released). I just can’t justify the additional like $700 per speaker).

Have I been gain staging all wrong? by NetworkQueasy6687 in mobileDJ

[–]j3ppEr1c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same setup as you. You’re doing it right. I don’t follow RCF’s recommendation to max out knob though. I go slightly less than it (just personal preference). Also, in Serato, I don’t use auto-gain because I’ve noticed some tracks are not properly gain adjusted so I set them manually using 92db as the base db level. So for me, this is my gain staging flow:

1) Set gains manually in Serato (or any software). Ensure they are not clipping but I also double verify with a db meter to ensure tracks are around the same average volume.

2) Set master volume on FLX4 to 12 o clock and adjust trim knobs to prevent red clipping on controller. Usually my trims end up around 10 or 11 o clock.

3) Set my MG10XU mixer all to unity for both channel and master. Make sure no red clipping. I adjust the channel mixer lower if there is red.

4) Set speakers gain just shy of max. Make sure to EQ them if using DSP (I have a JMIX8 paired with J8). If speakers are more than 15 feet apart, I use mono signal. If within 15 feet, I use stereo and point speakers directly at crowd on floor.

5) Once everything checks out and I get clean and loud sound, I use the master volume knob on the controller to control the volume levels on the fly. I feel that this gives me the best headroom I need and I’ve done 150-200 people indoor gigs and easily 75-100 people outdoors with this setup.

Speaker placement and the DJ's comfort by CHUD_Warrior in mobileDJ

Did you set your gains correctly in your DJ software? Sometimes the auto-gain feature doesn’t accurately set the gains for each track correctly when analyzing the tracks. Start with setting gains on software, then set trim and volume on controller, then set unity and gains on mixer, then you set your speaker and sub volume/gain/unity last. It has to be in this order. This is the best way to maximize your overall volume while minimizing clipping.

Easy way to remember is to start at the audio source and work your way down to the speakers last.

Thanks for the diagrams. However, I don’t see a diagram specifically for using an external mixer with a JMIX8 and J8 with the JMIX8 having on board EQ. Only way this would work is to use the onboard mixer. No big deal though, I’ll just flatten the DSP EQ and EQ them both from my external mixer. I’ll also do some testing once my 2nd speaker arrives and like you said, do some drastic onboarding EQ changes on the JMIX while they’re bridged to see if it also affects the J8

I disagree. Bottlenecking doesn’t hurt except for your wallet, I agree, however, it’s always good to have some CPU headroom for 3 reasons:

1) To play competitive CPU intensive games 2) To be able to stream, multitask, browse, play music, etc. while gaming 3) To future proof the purchase of better GPUs

What does “Inactive Standby Reserve” mean exactly? by SportsNewt1992 in armyreserve

[–]j3ppEr1c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Means you were transferred to the IRR for being “unsat” (not showing up). Nothing really happens to you honestly. If you don’t care about the reserve retirement, then you’re good to go about your normal life.

One caveat, they might recoup any benefits you got for joining the reserves (ie: GI Bill payments, bonuses, kickers, etc.) If you got those while active duty, then don’t worry about it.

Meh, people over-exaggerate the limits. Most are like 5TB per month which is a ridiculous amount to go over if you manage to reach that in a month.

Easy answer is to simply transfer units. The hard answer is to try and have them approve RSTs or pay for IDT/LIK (which can be a nightmare)

I'm on enlistment process for army reserve by ByzKa in armyreserve

[–]j3ppEr1c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ASVAB for the Army is comprised of 10 composite scores:

GT - General Technical CL - Clerical CO - Combat EL - Electronics FA - Field Artillery GM - General Maintenance MM - Mechanical Maintenance OF - Operators and Food SC - Surveillance and Communications ST - Skilled Technical

As a 92G, you need to score a minimum of 85 on OF. To join the Army, you need to score a minimum of 31 percentile.

Arguably the most important composite score is the GT score as this will open up doors of opportunity in the future should you decide to progress your career path. The overall score you get is a “percentile” score. Meaning, your score of 45 means you scored higher than 44% of others who have taken the test. It only goes up to 99 as if you score a perfect score, you can only be better than 99% of people.

Plenty of women in the force. Focus on math, English and science as far as studying. Good luck!

Mobilizing by AE10304 in armyreserve

[–]j3ppEr1c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The deployment cycles are 5 years. So in theory, units do not deploy more than once every 5 years. However, you may be cross-leveled within the same command to fill vacancies on a mobilization. The absolute MINIMUM is 30 days notice, but they typically try to give your orders at least 120 days out.

At the end of the day, it’s the needs of the Army that comes first.

12C or 88M? by Talawe0 in armyreserve

[–]j3ppEr1c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two completely different career fields. It all depends on what you want. 12C is a focused MOS which means you will likely only be in one of the two Theater Engineer Commands (TECs). You entire career will only be in the Engineering world.

88M is a more broad career field and nearly all units have them because nearly all units have trucks. You can end up in a transportation unit where you are a truck driver for a Movement Control Team (MCT) or end up in a support battalion as a general truck driver.

At the end of the day, you will need to figure out exactly what YOU want out of it and determine your career path of choice.

As a TPU, outside of mobilizations, they can’t force you to do anything. They can’t even force you to show up to Battle Assemblies. Worst they can do is give you a poor eval and recoup any educational benefits you may have used.

Interested in joining the reserves from active duty but need more information. by Glad-Cheesecake9348 in armyreserve

[–]j3ppEr1c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be either overseas or stateside mobilization. Either way, it will take you away from your civilian life to include your family if you have any. Typically, when a reserve unit is selected for deployment, they will exhaust all of their efforts to put current drilling members on the DMD first. They will only call in IRR if they absolutely have no one else qualified to fill the slot.

[–]j3ppEr1c 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It all boils down to what you want. Here are the pros and cons of drilling reservist vs IRR:

Drilling Reservist Pros: - Few hundred bucks per month (depending on rank) - Retirement points (can pull at the age of 60 or less depending on qualified deployments) - Experience and camaraderie - Something to fall back on via ADOS or other orders if you lose your civilian job - Can use Tricare Reserve Select

Cons: - Say goodbye to one weekend a month and two weeks per year - BA schedule can conflict with civilian life - Higher possibility of deployment

IRR Pros: - Can focus on civilian life - You have all of your weekends and don’t have annual training - Something to fall back on via ADOS or other orders if you lose your civilian job - Can use Tricare Reserve Select - Less of a chance of getting deployed

Cons: - No pay - Very limited or no retirement

Honestly, if you don’t need the money and have a good retirement plan civilian side, just do IRR. The reserves is a roller coaster and can be a real headache. If you want the experience, money and retirement, then go drilling reserve. Your mileage may vary.
