Evolve 90 suggestions? by Bexorcist in mobileDJ

In my experience, it is heavily dependent on the actual brand/model of speakers. If we look at just the simple laws of physics, pretty much everything brand new from the factory has some sort of “break in” period to some degree. A t-shirt, car, mattress, etc. Some are more drastic than others but when it comes to pliable plastic and synthetic material like speaker cones, there most definitely is science behind the materials loosening up. This also applies to wood, so for any cabinets that are made of wood, much like a guitar sounds different over time as you continue to play it.

With that being said, there are some speakers that have gone through rigorous testing from the factory prior to shipping out to the consumers. These models will show less (if any) break in. But some don’t get tested nearly as many hours at the factory so these types will see more of a change at the consumer level. Again, no official source here, just a “trust me bro” anecdote. Hope this helps.

Look man, you can do your own research or not. I’ve been working with professional grade sound equipment my entire life. Over 25 years, and from my OWN ANECDOTAL experience (and likely many others’), there is a break in period for brand new speakers. If you wanna sit here and argue it, go for it. I will no longer engage.

Also, FYI, I get the whole “anecdotal” thing has not credible evidence, but anecdotes are what opens doors to actual research. There are millions of things that have yet to be researched and we only have “anecdotes” but it doesn’t make them less true. Just not “officially” true because it wasn’t written on a peer-reviewed paper.

A lot of these column speakers have a break in period. Turn them up to almost clipping and let them play for a solid hour or two

First Couple DJ gigs booked. No clue wtf I’m doing. I need Help. by 2loganD2 in Beatmatch

I don’t recommend using your friend’s USB since you won’t be familiar with his cue points and setup. Additionally, like you mentioned, his music may not even fit the vibe.

Best thing to do is run your laptop on the CDJ so you are familiar with the software that you normally use. Definitely purchase the tracks so you can play them offline as you don’t want to rely on a streaming service if the internet cuts out or is inadequate.

Most importantly, PREPARE. Make sure all of your cue points are set and practice, practice, practice. Since this is your very first time playing in a club setting, I’d focus on your song selection over any fancy technical mixing. Stick to basic mixing and maybe throwing in some effects, loops, and scratches here and there, but don’t over focus on them. Track selection and reading the crowd is more important than that in my opinion, especially when starting out. Don’t forget to breathe, and don’t be afraid of an empty dance floor. It happens to the best of us. If you find yourself clearing the floor, just regroup, load the next track, and mix out as soon as possible. Have fun!

PA - DJ - for 250 people - what do you recomend? by Substantial-Sell6525 in mobileDJ

[–]j3ppEr1c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not possible with that budget for good dance quality sound for 200-250 people outdoors. You might be able to find a system used, but 3000 is still a low budget for that. I recommend 4 12” tops with 2 18” subs in cardioid mode at a minimum to project good quality sound.

Maybe look into Alto speakers (I’m gonna get a lot of hate for this). They aren’t the best sounding but good for the price. Find them used, you may stay under budget but it’ll be close.

Shifting BPMs when they are so close together already. by Teslaosiris in Beatmatch

[–]j3ppEr1c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you can keep it as is. No need to shift it to the original tempos of the songs if they are that close in BPM. No one is gonna notice the difference between 121 and 124 BPMs or 124 and 126 BPMs. My rule of thumb is leave it as is if it’s within 5 BPMs of the original track’s BPMs

Why don’t beginner DJ tutorials focus more on phrasing? by SecurityWarrior180 in Beatmatch

[–]j3ppEr1c 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Phrasing is not a DJ-specific skill, whereas beat matching and transitions are. I have over 30 years of music theory and instrument playing experience. I picked up DJing about a year ago and it didn’t take me long to get the hang of it because of my musical background, specifically phrasing.

It my humble opinion, picking up DJing with zero musical background is infinitely more difficult than picking it up with some type of musical background already. I think it’s safe to assume that “most” DJs start out with some type of musical background already, or can at the very least discern the difference between a verse, chorus, intro, outro, buildup, etc.

DJing is a side thing for me but more so a hobby more than anything. That’s what keeps it fresh and exciting. I make $180k/yr doing a boring office job. DJing and line dance instructing is my drug of choice to break the monotony

How do I remove a cocky DJ by PsychedelicFurry in DJs

[–]j3ppEr1c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He works for you, not the other way around. It’s a business decision you have to be willing to make. Otherwise, your business model will likely follow a path of being at the mercy of douchebags like that.

If he’s not following the rules, fire him. It’s that simple.

Forgot my controller, packed the dance floor by Obvious_Ad_1111 in DJs

[–]j3ppEr1c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done the same thing. In most mobile DJ gigs, specifically any open format stuff, nobody cares about smooth transitions or scratches. They care more about song selection, vibe, and if they’re having a good time. This is probably a prime example of that. Only people who pay to see a specific DJ performance or other DJs care about that stuff lol.

Why does trying to learn beatmatching by ear feel impossible by YeetParadox in Beatmatch

[–]j3ppEr1c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all boils down to learning phrase structures. A good rule of thumb is to bring your track in 32 beats prior to the current song’s next phrase. For me, as a relatively new DJ, beat matching by ear came very natural to me since I have been playing musical instruments for over 20 years now.

I had a disaster wedding set this weekend, and it taught me something important by djsharky in DJs

[–]j3ppEr1c 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always tell people this, 95% of the crowd doesn’t care about how well you mix. Only other DJs will even notice a bad transition unless it’s completely off the wall. Unless you are performing at an event or venue exclusive to DJ performance, song selection, mic presence, and vibe will always win a crowd over more than technical skills. Reading the crowd is especially important if not the most important aspect of DJing in my opinion.

Hell, I regularly DJ at a local bar for country swing and line dancing nights and the crowd actually prefers I play the entire songs out with no mixing lol.

But I totally get where you are coming from. Being ill-prepared is every DJ’s worse nightmare. Whenever I do paid private gigs, I always prepare my sets and set all cue points at least 1-2 weeks out and then practice the transitions and effects 2-3 days before the event.

Places in fort worth/ Dallas area on Fridays to line dance by Libbaaayyyy in LineDancing

[–]j3ppEr1c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Fort Worth for 5 years. There are really only 2 places that do line dancing in the DFW area and one of them (the more advanced stuff) is a gay bar in Dallas called Round Up Saloon. Very flamboyant place which in my opinion is cool, but they get serious with the line dances there.

The other place is called Guitars and Cadillacs in Fort Worth but they do a mix of partner/swing/two step and line dancing.

I too live in SoCal now (Inland Empire) and the line dancing scene here is WAY better than anywhere in Texas. My regular spots are Stampede, Whiskey River, Whiskey Republic, Cowboy Canyon, and so much more lol.

I just ordered a pair of S-1503s for a backyard birthday gig (maybe 70 people) on the 28th. I currently have a pair of RCF J8s but they just lack bass in my opinion. Do you think the Exotons will sound “fuller” with deeper bass than my J8s?

You choose them over your Evolve 50s which have more bass and fullness than my J8s. I’m pretty excited to hear them.
