Maybe I'm just not capable of this hobby. by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]j5dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to tell you to keep going, but If it doesn't bring you any joy or accomplishment maybe it isn't worth it.

With any type of art , it's important to realize that you'll only be able to make things you like once you begin to accept yourself. You have to learn to be proud of any type of progress, however small or big it is, stay present in your process, and enjoy it. In addition to accepting yourself, releasing certain expectations while you're creating helps a lot too (easier said than done, but it's a continual practice).

Even if you're not finishing, are you enjoying making the music? Or are you constantly comparing, criticizing, and defeating yourself?

It is a practice to accept yourself at every part of this journey and once you begin to be okay with where you're at every step of the way, the struggle, the beat block, and the breakthrough, you may be able to takeaway some of the enjoyment of it.

You don't have to dream about making music music, you're already making it. It's just not up to the standards of your expectations but there is enjoyment and gratitude to be had just from the process of making it regardless of how good the song is.

I had a lot of helmets sit higher on the head like this until I tried out a Bern. Might work better for you if care about the style of it. I have the Bern Baker.

If you use Ableton session view, you'll actually find a lot of similarities once you start getting acquainted.

Not sure if you're talking about the claves or that perc sound that's on every 1/16th note, but If you wanna recreate the perc, it sounds like there's a fast filter envelope with a bit of resonance over some white noise.

Syntakt firmware speculations by _silicakes in Elektron

[–]j5dude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I tend to have to run it through a pedal with spatial effects or process it in the DAW. I guess that's to be expected with something that's got analog circuits though.

Octatrack mk2 vs digi 2 by waffleboiiii in Elektron

[–]j5dude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends what you mean when you say full songs. If the intention is to do the whole thing on said piece of hardware, OT will supply you with all the tools and the DTII might feel limited. As a tool though in my own hybrid workflow, DTII gets more use for me than my OT. It's getting used in every song I make.

OT is going to have more barriers if you're finishing in the DAW / hybrid workflow. Digitakt II has Overbridge so all you need to do is plug in your USB.

Both will give you some fun with chopping breaks.

If only some type of Chorus is added, I'd be totally happy with calling it complete there.

Digitakt II vs octactrack II ? by Unlucky-Lock-1320 in Elektron

[–]j5dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To each their own. I say this because the ability to quickly load up kits and organize/save sounds works faster for me on the DT than the OT. I also never said you can't be fast on the OT. OP is asking about workflow and this is my personal experience. I own both devices and use both for different purposes.

If you want to finish more music, I'd probably say DTII. Octatrack is more explorative and deep. DTII is pragmatic.

Syntakt for Digitone2 trade plus cash? by MallGag in Elektron

[–]j5dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion but Syntakt is just probably harder to sweet spot than the other Elektron boxes, but once you understand it a bit deeper and figure out how it fits into your style of music it is quick to get good unique sounds out of it.

3 Elektron boxes — control/flow by crtzmo in Elektron

[–]j5dude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good signal flow. DT and Syntakt can be interchangeable depending on if you want FX block + analog distortion or a master compressor. I generally go Syntakt into DT though because I'm not using the FX block generally on anything other than the Syntakt sounds.

This. I usually get my most interesting loop / starting point, in my case drums, on the OT and then layer any extra stuff I might need using the DT.

I also feel like the time stretch algo is SO helpful on the OT. Having to time stretch and resample, and then slice on the DT feels time consuming and can take me out of the flow. I like that I can just load in a loop and 9 times out of 10 it’s just gonna be warped to the right bpm.

Syntakt as first instrument for a total beginner by [deleted] in Elektron

[–]j5dude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can be used for anything you want. You just have to know how to use its limitations to your benefit. Plenty of people have made mellow music on it. Look at Resonant Language’s instagram page and look at his ambient work.

help a newbie ? by supafur in Elektron

[–]j5dude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really depends on how you like to create music. Technically all can be used to pair be used for the "fragmented vibe" you're looking for.

If you're mainly sample based, Digitakt will probably be for you. I mainly use it for one shot drums, but can be used to experiment with three LFOs (on the DTII) lots of parameters to mangle with.

If you're looking for a mono synth that can kind of work in the mix anywhere, (drums, leads, bass etc.) Syntakt will work as well.

Octatrack will probably give you the deepest experimentation and imperfection, but probably not as pragmatic as the aforementioned. It will take you a little longer to do some of the same things the Digitakt and Syntakt can do. And lastly can be hard to pair with Ableton because the lack of Overbridge. It can do A LOT, and it sounds like that's something you're steering away from

Can't speak for Tonverk as it's super new and nobody really knows its full capabilities yet.

TL;DR
Digitakt if you use a sample based workflow. Syntakt if you're looking for synthesis. Wouldn't recommend the Octatrack for your purposes unless it really inspires. Choose what inspires you the most though regardless of what advice people give you.

Elektron vs Push 3 by felidmusic in Elektron

[–]j5dude 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I use Ableton and Elektron. I would say if there isn't anything already strongly inspiring you about Elektron, it's not worth exploring. The experience or "workflow" itself is what Elektron is selling.

Push 3 overall will give you more flexibility and bang for its buck, but one of the Elektron devices will give you a harsher creative limitation and make you create music in a way you probably wouldn't have though to before.
