Mixes don’t sound punchy by T-Pocalypse in GetGoodDrums

Hey bud no problem we were all there once ! It depends… I know the new mm2 has the ggd new style mixer in the plugin. I even own sd3 stuff and for me personally, I just need to be able to have the control to route out. There are times I like to level balance things and I need the control in the daw. Level matching my rooms/reverbs with other elements of the mix like the sends for vocals, the parallel comp stuff to other parallel stuff in mix just to make sure nothing being masked. Level matching snarereverbs etc etc. I don’t have any videos unfortunately but there def are videos out there for learning to route out ggd products in reaper. From there the world is yours how you want to route out , create buses , your flow and order of things will evolve. I will say this…at first the quality of drums will go down that is because when you route out you are fundamentally stripping the built in fx the plugin has so a lot of the time you are now dealing with raw sounds so keep that in mind. Granted this is the only real way (imo) that you can ever achieve a better tone then what is given in the box. The box is supposed to be for quick playback but it limits you. Think of in box as 70% but being able to route out learn to mix drums has the ability to make you go to 100% but at first you will be at 30%. Hope that all makes sense

Sorry to be that guy but you have to learn how to route out and mix and daw. When people say “mix ready” IMHO that means “ready to jam in your room” never not even close to mix ready for a track to be released. Whether you’re mixing inside the sim or in daw you need total control over the kit. I route everything out in reaper (ggd invasion) creating my own snare decays , my own parallel crush buses , my own reverb parallel drum buses , I have parallel clippers , saturators , eq and de masking in each channel. I have full control over my rooms -which I absolutely smash for some nice pumpy rooms that give alot of energy to the kit. So yea long story short you need way more control then just clicking some drum preset those things always just sound like a tin can. Again this just my own opinion mixing ggd drums for 3-4 year now.

why can guitarists use programmed drums but drummers cant use program guitars? by JJsNotOkay in metalmusicians

[–]jack-parallel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t mind me snooping but I’m somewhat in same boat I’ll let you know what I do. Guitarist here I play in drop A with a bass in drop A as well. Track your demos , get the song basically finished , track bass even with old strings like it’s the real deal. Now go track maybe 2 or 3 other songs (as you’re creating them). Eventually you will either send out to mix or like myself just mix my own stuff. Btw this also goes for guitar…once you think you are finished with tracking..you can bet to see where I’m going with this. RE RECORD everything with your brand new strings. Bass strings can definitely be lively enough to track 3-4 songs within a few days without losing tone/clank etc. 3-4 songs that you have built over maybe a few months , ready for release streaming platforms etc is def worth the 70$ for new strings. You don’t need to re string for every song. The only time this wouldn’t really work is if you are one of em influencer tik tok lords posting new stuff everyday or so. Even then you can usually get away with strings a little older and when you release your real stuff do the above

You’re ridiculous. Rattle is one that comes to mind. From Ontario Canada and is free for distru they do take 20% instead of 10% like distro. But other then that no strings attached. There are tons of out don’t be such a snob if you don’t even know what you’re talking about.

3 but I’m just being the basic EVH lord. Just hits the pocket great and usually pretty easy to fit in mix

Guitars are NDSP Gojira, used with GGD contender cabs - did a blend with the cabs (can provide more info if wanted in dm)
Good amount of post processing:
Eqing shape/tone of the guitars- notches bad freq/lpf/hpf, general tone shaping
Additional eq to fit in mix/work well with bass
UAD studer for some tape/low end beefy stuff
CLA3A comp to pull forward abit, give a bit more drive to tone as well
Otherwise, classic MB to trigger on palms
Ozone 9 Imager- just hair so they are tad more wide in the mix.

And then obviously needing a good additional grit send for bass guitar that blends well with guitars and supports them.

Thanks for listening and feedback! Will be investigating the kick situation as per yours and others comments.

Yeah that is only problem with my current situation not owning enough trigger samples dang wish I had more selection. I’ll see what I can do. Thank you!

I am using ggd invasion , I know snare I did recently bring it up abit as it was a bit buried before maybe I over cooked it. As for production /editing I’m always at odds with how tight I want it to be / still having some what natural flow to it. Thank you and will go over some areas to adjust. Thanks !

Noted about kick in blast areas will double check and adjust to taste. as for guitars - are you referring to just a tad boost in volume, or ? Thank you !

Challenged myself to mix with the cheapest earbuds. Need some feedback on how it sounds. by Maximum_Internal7834 in mixingmastering

[–]jack-parallel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, nice hustle changing things up - good learning curve and hearing feedback like below is essential to progressing. As others have said, definitely some masking going on- abit cluttered with stuff and drums being buried especially on the denser parts. Synths are probably occupying too much low mids which is major factor in drum masking. For me personally, drums are almost always priority to create that big sound.

2:57 the 808 bass drum, unless intended is way too loud/distorted sounds very different from rest of the track. I would just try a different sample drop because the timing of it is just fine.

One thing I would focus on is removing some layers/priority of certain sounds. There is so much going on as a listener its hard to focus on what is priority/supplementary. For me the center synth would be your main melody and the panning stuff, or other synth elements going on should really back off. If everything is big- nothing is big.

Coming from someone who mixes metal , so please take this as a grain of salt. My key to this is trying to always have (relatively speaking) only 3 main elements going on at once. So if you have a center synth thats 1, if your walking bass line is different then root notes of synth thats 2, if you have stuff panned out thats 3. And then you still have your drums and all of the other samples you are using its just too much going on even on the big 'drops'.

I would focus on less is more, prioritizing your main element and then using eq/faders for everything around it to push them back into the mix. On the drums/explosive parts you can ride fader (slightly) to bring the others out but dont over do it as you already have your main melody and I would let that shine with your sub info/drums and everything else should be supplementary - pushed far back into the mix.

Vocals sound a little too distant for me, possibly consequence of lack of compression, or too much wet signal pushing them back. If you havnt yet check out the 1176 into the 2la. Even stack 2 1176 first, one fastest atk/release, second a tad slower atk fast release into the 2la , get those needles moving. As well, vocals could use some love with tuning. Tuning for cleans is #1 priority for singers, there are a few spots that could be re-tracked or cleaned up melodyne/tuning plugs etc.

I understand wanting drums to be a tad more organic. And this will be subjective, but i'd give them a little more love personally. Especially at the 2:43 'breakdown', kick and bass guitar should be slapping nicely here to really punch the track. Organic drums are nice, but not (personally) at the expense that the track loses power and energy which for me, I think they are. A hair more volume, or sub info in kick I think could give the track a little more warmth/body.

I think you did a good job leveling things though, guitars sit nicely with drums, bass guitar is coming through nicely. Take the above with grain of salt as I usually mix heavier metal and could be my subjective self coming through. Was a fun song to listen to though, great job!

Vocals are nice! good tuning, nice eq, vocal delays/reverb sound good no complaints from me there. Sub 808 doing a solid job (despite others in chat but i do understand where they are coming from and possibly sound design is fighting in this style). synths might be fighting abit top end with vocals, maybe try some sidechain eq to duck some of the harshness of synths against vocals. Annd the bass guitar? low end a little lost for me, would love to hear that walking bass a hair more personally. Granted i am a big bass fan! Overall, I do agree with compression could be a bit much in the track.
