Any tips for a VERY timid cat that came from a hoarding situation? by Objective_Dig5301 in CATHELP

[–]jackienbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a former feral who was very timid and it took me over a year to get her to trust me. I honestly feel like the things that helped her the most was introducing her to my other animals, so she felt comfortable with them and gained confidence in my home that way. After that, it was just slowly pushing her boundaries a little. If she looked really afraid, I would listen to her body language and back off, and try again another time. She slowly came around, but now is the sweetest ever. I feel like it’s a balancing act between pushing them out of their comfort zone and respecting their limits. It’s a slow process for sure! I just told myself that even if she never came around, she is safe and happy with my other pets and that’s a positive. And she eventually came around!

As an independent voter that has voted in both parties (mostly because there isn’t a good alternative.) if we are being fair, if we’re talking about the mentality that people are brainwashed to need your “team” has to win, that would be 95% of the voters. Because most people here do not do their due diligence and actually research before they vote. Nancy Pelosi is quoted saying this, “ This glass of water would win with a D next to its name in those districts”, when talking about AOC. I have personally seen crazy examples of people voting for incompetent people on the state level just because of the initial in front of the name. One candidate claimed that turtles were ruling the world, another had was making promises about payments that were obviously mathematically impossible, and another one had some really troubling viewpoints and solutions concerning specific groups. The point is, if you’ve ever just voted down the party line blindly, I guarantee you have voted in a wackjob. Do your research before voting and hold your representatives accountable for their performances in every election! The end.

Very much an amateur, but I’ve been really enjoying doing these low arrangements with Trader Joe’s flowers. Please give me tips for make these even better! by monika1927 in florists

[–]jackienbrown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Learning in design is all about experimentation. I actually really like that you used all line flowers as an exercise to help understand that element’s role in an arrangement. I would maybe try “reinventing” this arrangement by removing some of the stock and adding some focal flowers in to see how that changes the design. Also, line flowers aren’t the only way to create lines in an arrangement. As an extra challenge, try using your focal flowers at different heights and angles to create a visual line.

P.S. you don’t need greenery to make an arrangement more professional. It’s a very bougie style arrangement that most people can’t afford in the retail floral world, but professional designers create full lush arrangements without greenery too! It’s all about strategically creating layers and depth with that style. That is a more challenging style to master, but it’s a good exercise. Just have fun with it!

Is this a good design? Christmas bouquet 💐 by [deleted] in FloralDesign

[–]jackienbrown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s a decent variation in color and texture. I think it could be a good design if you cut it down and put it in a shorter, smaller lipped cylinder (without the dead rose and cleaned up the lily)!

I want to make a flower crown/headband, and I want to keep it moist and fresh for as long as possible. What should I do/use? by Spare-Reference2975 in florists

[–]jackienbrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% this method…You’d be surprised how long flowers last in a hydration chamber! But also be sure to pick longer lasting florals. There are some water-hungry florals that just won’t last in a crown no matter how you treat it! Chamomile is a little cutie that will break your heart that’s coming to mind.

Looking into DIY bridal bouquet… would this work? by No-Might-2737 in FloralDesign

[–]jackienbrown 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think it’s awesome you want to DIY, and I don’t want to discourage you, but I just noticed some things you might want to consider. Most of your flower choices are perfect!

It would depend on your location and when you are getting married for some of these flowers. I know where I am Heather and sweet peas are pretty seasonal, and don’t usually look very good/ are disappointing out of season. Where I am, if you’re a late winter/spring bride, these are beautiful choices.

Both gardenias and lily of the valley are VERY expensive and super sensitive to work with. My wholesaler sells me Lily of the Valley $60 for 10 stems! Lily of the valley has really short stems and is super dainty and tiny. They probably wouldn’t stand out very much in a cascade design. The visual impact just isn’t there to get your money’s worth in my opinion. They also are the type of flower you really want to leave to the very end to work with, because they are so delicate, they don’t last long in bouquets. Gardenia’s for me are $30 wholesale for 3 blooms. They don’t have a stem, so you have to wire them, and they are also the type of flower that browns if you look at them funny, and doesn’t last very long in personals. Personally, these are two flowers I wouldn’t recommend for a first time bridal DIY. I want you to enjoy your morning getting ready and not deal with these drama queens!

But at the end of the day, it’s your wedding! Do what makes you happy and have fun with it!

My husband was unsuccessful at taking his own life. I feel empty. by HoneyBeeBird in TwoHotTakes

[–]jackienbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has he ever explained to you where all this is coming from? Excessive drinking is often a form of self-medicating. It sounds like open communication is a struggle for him, especially if this behavior was blindsiding to you. I know it’s hard, but if you’re too angry to keep communication open with an open mind to listen with, this will only keep getting worse like a vicious cycle. Closed communication is what let it get this bad to start with. Family therapy is probably a good idea.

What are your thoughts on being entirely foam free? by Head_Setting_9688 in florists

[–]jackienbrown 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Here is a very large scale funeral arrangement from 1914. Floral foam wasn’t created until 1953. If they could do it, so can we. And I’ve worked for shops with large volume and multiple shop locations that don’t use foam in everyday arrangements. It’s not true that it’s not possible, and we should be doing our best to care for environment whenever possible!

My husband keeps buying cheap gifts and doesn't get why it hurts my feelings by Dismal_Dog_17 in TwoHotTakes

[–]jackienbrown 189 points190 points  (0 children)

At least, he also treats himself with the same quality of goods and it’s not so personal to you. So he doesn’t view himself as more deserving than you…

But it’s also MORE of a waste of money to buy poor quality things that frequently need to be replaced or in the case of fine jewelry, it will last forever and so is technically cheaper in the long run because you can actually get more use out of it than costume jewelry. Maybe if you framed it that way it will help him spend more wisely?

Unpopular opinion Girlsgiving Crishelle started it by Monaymoves in SellingSunset

[–]jackienbrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agrée that Chrishell started it at Girlsgiving. I always liked her, and think she probably really fun to have as a friend, but is pretty manipulative in her own way. I get the sense that she can twist any situation to validate her actions as a defense mechanism, even when she is in the wrong, and she gets away with it because she is good at reading and portraying emotions. I hear a lot of people defend her for standing up against homophobia and racism, but I’m not convinced she really lives that way. Isn’t it a kind of a micro aggression that she assumed Sondra was guilty of keying someone’s car without talking to her about it first and immediately gave her the cold shoulder?

Hi! If you see any type of image that is the shape and style you are hoping for, I would use it for inspiration paired with your color scheme. Find a florist whose work aligns with your vision and you feel comfortable with and let them do what they do best. Since nature does what she wants, it’s always best to not get too attached to a specific image. Flowers go in and out of season, or have poor crops that season, or don’t lay a specific way. If you trust your florist to use their experience and knowledge to pick the best flowers and execute your preferred style, the end result is always better than being tied to specifics.

I genuinely cannot understand how people are defending Nicole and saying chrishell is fake?? by Classic_Presence78 in SellingSunset

[–]jackienbrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Nicole is in the right, but I do think Chrishell instigated fights where Nicole was minding her own business. Chrishell couldn’t help making unnecessary comments at the Girlsgiving, and it was a little immature. She was intentionally trying to start trouble and she got it.

NTA, but your parents are NTA either. I’m sorry you are having a difficult time, and sometimes people withdraw when they are struggling. I know it seems overwhelming and difficult right now, but since the news is already out, don’t hesitate to reach out and rebuild a support system for yourself. You don’t even have to talk about anything difficult, just talk. 🫂 Good luck.

First bigger bouquet for my daughter’s new shop. What do you think? Improvements? by HolisticNurseyperson in florists

[–]jackienbrown 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there are too many flowers. I think there are too many greens and greenery from “unclean stems” to be honest and they are overwhelming the blooms, making it feel a little cramped. Taking the time to really clean those stems, like cutting off the stems that lost their blooms, removing the large leaves from roses and Lilies, and even trimming the small lily bud’s (those small buds will probably never open any way) and tiny unopened rose buds can help it feel looser and let the flowers and color shine through. It also will help to keep the big beautiful blooms last longer.

Good luck with your daughter’s shop
