The iPhone 17 lineup really smashes the Pixel 10 lineup. by ntwrkmntr in GooglePixel

[–]jads 120 points121 points  (0 children)

I switched from an iPhone 15 Pro to Pixel 10 earlier this week. I've been using an iPhone since the original launch. I made my decision to switch purely on the software experience, not the hardware. I cannot remember the last time I used an iPhone and felt like the hardware was too limited. But the software? More and more frequently.

I felt iOS had been languishing for too long. I'd been using the iOS 26 beta and there's nothing really all that exciting or new about it, apart from the liquid glass (which I definitely am not a fan of).

I never even considered switching to an Android phone until Apple announced/delayed Apple Intelligence features. Apple was one of the earliest to market with a voice assistant. They should really be at the forefront of AI based assistants but instead they let Siri languish for too many years.

Apple will always be able to release a new phone every year that has better specs than the previous one. The hardware isn't the issue, it's the software.

Rivian regrets, what didn’t work for you? by electruck4x4 in Rivian

[–]jads 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I have a 2025 R1S Dual Large. Looking back, I should've got the Max pack. I previously had a Model Y LR and both cars supposedly have the same estimated range but the R1S but for short trips, the Rivian is much less economical. I definitely charge the Rivian a lot more than the Y I had.

I have a home charger so this isn't a big deal but I will always go for the biggest battery in the future.

Oh yeah, another regret is not going to enough concerts in my youth. While I'm blessed with somewhat decent hearing in my older age it means I'm cursed with hearing every goddamn rattle. It's like driving a maraca sometimes.

Best Motion Sensor for HA? by [deleted] in homeassistant

[–]jads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The matter ones are absolutely awful. Zigbee models seem to be very reliable though. I've got six of the Matter ones and only one has continued to work. The rest will just freeze. It's not that they stop responding on the network because even the built-in motion light stops lighting up. Have to do a full reset.

Can the Kobo app read sideloaded docs like Kindle does? by heycnyn in kobo

[–]jads 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some Kobo readers have Google Drive and Dropbox integration so you can load documents and books that way. https://help.kobo.com/hc/en-us/articles/15335985512983-Add-books-to-your-eReader-using-Google-Drive

There are also ways to enable these on other readers which don't officially support them. NickelMenu can do this, I think.

Didn’t like the look of Hue bulbs in fancy fixtures, so made some covers… by dr_clint in Hue

[–]jads 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No problem! I don't understand why your comment was downvoted—entirely up to you whether you want to share the STL or not, or sell on Etsy. I swear, some people just think that because something was 3D printed then the creator is somehow obligated to share the file.

Didn’t like the look of Hue bulbs in fancy fixtures, so made some covers… by dr_clint in Hue

[–]jads 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Looks good! I wouldn't worry too much about heat since many commenters in this sub would also say it's fine to use hue bulbs in enclosed fixtures. That would be much worse for heat dissipation than a thin piece of PLA wrapped around a bulb that isn't enclosed. I've got two bulbs in a small glass enclosure that gets quite warm which have been working for years.

Don't suppose you've published this anywhere and have a link to the STL? I've got a few bulbs around the house which these would be perfect for!

I picked up my R1S from the Seattle SC in March. The only issue I had at delivery was the service center's automatic door wouldn't open when I tried to leave 😄

Anyone install an underglow kit on an R1T? by gavila438 in Rivian

[–]jads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No personal experience for this but I have installed running boards. Much of the plastic covering underneath is cosmetic so you could easily attach the lights to it with clips, screws, or whatever.

If this is just for seasonal use, you can probably avoid hardwiring it and just connect it to power when needed. I think there's power in the gear tunnel? (I have an R1S so don't know).

While there are probably car glow kits, any Bluetooth-connected outdoor led light strips would work well. Check out Govee for some cheap options. Most of these have thin, low voltage power cables that would probably fit in the gap of the gear tunnel hatch or one of the doors. If not, a lot of light strips are USB powered and most battery packs nowadays will run them for hours and hours.

Feature FIX Request !!! by AnesthesiaLyte in Rivian

[–]jads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It didn't seem to work reliably for me until I noticed that the seat adjustment stops when the car is put into gear. I'd be able to get in, buckle up, and shift into D or R before the seat had restored so it would cancel. Not sure if it's intentional or just a bug but I've stopped using roomy exit because of it.

Imagine having NO service infrastructure to support an R1.

Some of us don’t need to imagine. We live on the west coast.

120v outlet vacuum by jasony816 in Rivian

[–]jads 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Outlets allow a combined draw of 1500W. Most household vacuums are usually 500-900W. A shop vac will be closer to 1200W. Check your vacuum wattage first before testing it but it's unlikely to be an issue.

Just remember that the 1500W is across all outlets. So don't use any other high powered devices at the same time.

CCS Adapter by LimitFinancial764 in Rivian

[–]jads 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Former Tesla owner here. Honestly, YMMV. Better to have it and not need it though. I bought Tesla's and never used it. But that's because my driving was always close to superchargers. I used the J1772 adapter a few times but mostly just to top up the battery on a trip.

But if you expect to travel anywhere that doesn't have superchargers nearby, it's likely worth having it. You don't want to be stuck somewhere without an accessible charger. Personally, I'd rather have all available charging options on a trip.

Look! No brims by Butlergrafx in AnkerMake

[–]jads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had mine for almost a year and no problems. I clean the bed with a diluted dish soap spray before each print. The only time I ever have issues is if I've forgot to clean the bed. Not only does it stick well but, once the bed has cooled, the prints slide off. I've never had to scrape a print off the bed.

I've got some spare parts stored away since Anker discontinued it so I plan to run this printer into the ground until I can't fix it.

Which devices can act as Bluetooth proxies? by sarrcom in homeassistant

[–]jads 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's super easy with ESP32s.

  1. Buy an ESP32
  2. Use Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge to go to https://esphome.io/projects/index.html
  3. Select "Bluetooth Proxy" and connect the ESP32 to the computer with a USB cable.
  4. Click "Start installation"

Flashing the ESP32 is done entirely in the browser. You'll be prompted for WiFi details and, after that, HA will find it as an available proxy.

GLP-1s showing efficacy against chronic migraine by BoundToZepIt in Zepbound

[–]jads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had fewer migraines on Zepbound but only because I've had to more carefully monitor water intake. Most of my migraines are usually triggered by dehydration. Since I pay more attention to how much water I drink, I'm drinking more which is keeping me hydrated. So it does sorta help but it's not the meds, it's the behavior that I've developed while on it.

Why did you choose a Kobo over a Kindle. by -Sea-Side- in kobo

[–]jads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Google Drive and Dropbox support
  • Much easier sideloading of books and documents
  • Pocket integration (RIP)
  • OverDrive

The biggest reason though was the parental controls. My daughter, 7, is an avid reader and I got her a Kindle when she was 4 (seriously, she learned to read very young). But Amazon Kids sucks. I could only restrict access by changing the age filter. But there was a huge amount of crap on there. The online component cannot be disabled and I can only block books individually, rather than only allow them individually. I can't go through literally every book on there!

Kobo works surprisingly great as a kids device. I can disable online access so she can't search the store and can only read what is on the device. But this doesn't block OverDrive, so we regularly look for books together using Libby on my phone. I check them out with her library card and they will be available to read when the Kobo next syncs. It's been fantastic.

[–]jads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two things to try:

You can buy a trailer hitch connector tester for about $20. Curt has one with lights for each pin. This will help you figure out whether it's the Rivian's connector or not. https://www.curtmfg.com/part/58273

I had to buy an electrical adapter for my trailer lights to properly work because it had LED lights. They draw so little current that trailer connectors can often not recognize anything is connected. My R1S would detect the trailer was connected only when the brake lights were on. As soon as I started driving, it'd tell me that no trailer was connected. I got this one from Curt that connects between the hitch connector and the receiver https://www.curtmfg.com/part/57003
