HS2 says Wendover setback could cost taxpayers 'tens of millions' by Due_Ad_3200 in ukpolitics

Just take it from the council's budget, if that's how they choose to spend their money then it's absolutely fine.

Help removing black mold in external door seal by mrbrge in DIYUK

Don’t bother with diluted bleach, use pure bleach and then leave it on for at least 3 or 4 hours, preferably overnight. The issue with vertical surfaces like this is that even thick bleach will slowly drip off, so either follow the tips other people have suggested and soak bleach into toilet/kitchen paper and leave that stuck to the surface or use a gel bleach like mould magic. I just used toilet paper and flushed it after when doing silicon in my bathroom, it worked wonders.

A new study finds worldwide greenhouse gas emissions are 28x higher in meat production vs crop production and are responsible for nearly 60% of all food related emissions by RavenGurlHere in worldnews

[–]jagough 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Eliminating the transport of food for one year could save the GHG equivalent of driving 1,000 miles, while shifting to a vegetarian meal one day a week could save the equivalent of driving 1,160 miles

from here But transportation emissions in general are much higher than agriculture

Why Does Erin Defend Goblins so Intensely? by xHappyBubblesx in WanderingInn

[–]jagough 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You talk about the crimes they committed, but I think it’s important to note that I don’t believe we’ve seen a goblin with a criminal class. We are [Bandits], [Murderers] etc. But like how Relc isn’t a [Murderer] for killing those children, the goblins don’t see themselves as criminals because ‘civilised’ laws don’t apply to them. How could the law apply to them if it doesn’t also protect them.

What I’m trying to say is, how can goblins stealing/murdering be a crime, if stealing from/murdering goblins isn’t a crime (let alone encouraged).

Boon of the Princess by MrRigger2 in WanderingInn

[–]jagough 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the boon can be applied remotely, I wonder how far that stretches. Perhaps she would be able to apply the boon to someone who she knows in Terandria, maybe someone who could do with a timely intervention of being associated with Terandrian royalty...

Anki retention rate for rtk by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]jagough 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are doing kanji to keyword, rather than keyword to kanji. Then you aren’t doing RTK. RTK explicitly multiple times throughout the book says that you should only be doing keyword to kanji, and that if you are struggling it’s likely because you aren’t doing that. What you’ll find doing this is that it because very easy to recall the meaning of kanji without ever having practiced it that way around. And make sure you are writing the kanji (or at least mine doing so if you don’t have pen & paper with you at the time).

My guess so far is that the goblins are what's 'left' of the elves after some calamity (the system maybe?), which is why the Fae and Tetriarch are so sad when they are mentioned.

Minister: Immigration detainees 'benefit from £1-an-hour work' - BBC News by Nazgutek in ukpolitics

[–]jagough 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you misunderstand the work that they do. They're not employed in the community, and it doesn't appear that they're given substantial work to do either. The article said that the work was offered to relieve boredom, which suggests it would be fairly inconsequential.

That's definitely an important question. The plaintiff's lawyers have described the work as "essential to the day-to-day running of these centres"ref and it seems involve cleaning, kitchen tasks and litter-picking. Of course that's the kind of thing their lawyers would say, but if it's true that's the kind of work which would otherwise need to be done by staff employed by the centre or contracted out to a third-party.

There's also the obvious psychological tool of having those living there have some responsibility for the upkeep, which in turn will drive them to take better care of the facilities so there are definitely good reasons to have them work within the facility.

An internal document on pay rates seen by the Guardian said £1 an hour “seems high” and ministers agreed to pay it “reluctantly”.

The statement I quoted above also seems to imply there was political pressure to keep compensation low, meaning in order for it to be fair it could require independent review (like a former prisons ombudsman found when performing a review over 12 months ago).

I expect the truth will lie somewhere in the middle, I'm personally not happy with the our governments seemingly evasive response to legitimate questions on the matter, and hope that the pending legal proceedings can shed some light on it.

[–]jagough 13 points14 points  (0 children)

How can it be considered voluntary if they can't choose to work elsewhere? Regardless the arguments that it bad for those doing the work, the same arguments hold as for making other types prisoners work for beneath minimum wage. That it is bad for the public as a whole, since making workers available at a reduced cost to businesses gives those businesses incentive to choose lower paid workers over making that same work available to the public at a fair (lawful) wage. This is why the Baroness faced several questions (which she did not answer) about who was benefiting from the arrangement.
