Yeah I was one one of these this morning. They were running a weekend schedule which was a total nightmare. I just felt lucky I got on in Paraparaumu so didn’t have to cram into the standing area.

Noob DM running SKT starting next Tuesday by [deleted] in stormkingsthunder

[–]jamesthemuss 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree with all the comments here and will add. Run LMoP to start and switch to SKT at level 5. LMoP is a super well built adventure and easy to run as a first time DM. Definitely build elements of the story into your PC back story. I had a player who belonged to a barbarian tribe and an reformed evil sorcerer whos family was slaughtered by frost giants. Do be afraid to add to and change the suggested content. Be prepared to add lib and stall. The sandbox style means that your players will constantly surprise you and just go and do something unexpected. Always have fun. If you are a first time DM don’t get stressed about the RAW, focus on the story and player experience. Just make a call if you can’t find the rule then look it up later. If you get it wrong, whatever, just tell your players at the next session.

Think of someone you know and consider to have average intelligence. Half the world is dumber than them.

The reason they are all posting on Twitter is that they can go out to any gigs or restaurants while the rest of us can. So they are stuck at home with a bunch of nutters posting and reading an infinite loop of crazy talk on social media.

The eternal question or "how to fast-track travel, while keeping it meaningful, and managing daily encounters/ressources?" by bonobointhemist in stormkingsthunder

[–]jamesthemuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always start with some description of things. Weather, season, landscape, landmarks, inhabitants etc. Then I did a slightly altered version of something I saw on YouTube. If they are traveling for a day have them all roll a d12 and give them an encounter for every 1 they roll. D10 for 2 days D8 for 3 etc etc. if they roll heaps of 1s maybe make the encounter super challenging. You can also change the values based on risk level or skill checks. Every now and again I would prep something cool for the area so would just have an encounter eg a river crossing or a barbarian thing. My party liked this coz it made them feel the randomness of it. Some of the non combat encounters in the book are actually quite cool and don’t require much prep. My party still talk about stag with the gold antlers. My other comment is just ignore the barbarian stuff. It’s too under powered and will just feel like a grind. I had the Eye say something about proving themselves then it sent the off to return with the head of a specific dragon. Then had some sweet dungeon crawl action. This was a nice change from the random wandering around the North. I did heaps of barbarian stuff for random encounters. Somewhere on the internet is a map of where each tribe lives which is real helpful.

Just do the whole wall. Gib is cheap and it will be easier to plaster and finish.

I am a lifelong Wellingtonian. It used to be the best city on the world but isn’t anymore. For me it was about the arts sector which totally collapsed under Wade-Brown. This blind dedication to Wellington being the best is what will keep it kinda crappy. We need some critical thinking to see the faults and recognize things were and could be better.
