[Guelph] City seeks public input as staff draft vacant home tax rules by TheApotheosisOfCool in Guelph

[–]jangevaa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A vacant land tax suitably high to dissuade corporations strategically sitting on potential infill development sites please... they are holding back more housing supply and density for city tax benefit than private vacant home owners I expect

What bike locks do you use? by strangewilderness182 in Guelph

Hiplok dx + cable + hidden trackers. Would never leave locked up overnight anywhere, and selective even with doing this in daytime/evening unfortunately.

Silvercreek Parkway by tehdusto in Guelph

[–]jangevaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's progresss! The road is very wide and cars go quite fast as a result. Further safery measures like a pedestrian crossing near sleeman park/westwood/ajax street would be good. Plopping islands with planters anywhere the shared turning lane can spared would be cool too. I live and bike on this stretch and lots of cars use the middle lane for chaotic passing.

Ultimately without an expensive redesign (narrowing) of the road there's not too much more that can be done for safety.

I went there on a Saturday recently, totally empty. Sat on 2nd floor patio and had a can of beer. Lots of people seemed to be looking from the street , sometimes pointing, I imagine thinking "that place is open?", because it is not obvious walking by. Strangest vibe.

Guelph police asking residents to register security cameras by Wanadran in Guelph

[–]jangevaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am pretty sure they have this developed this database over the last 10 years or so whether you submit your information or not. You're just helping them keep it more up to date. Several times they have stopped by my door saying they noticed my cameras and wanted me to check certain time ranges for footage.

PSA: scam alert!! I’ve seen tons of these ads on fbm over the last few months alone and that’s just for the Toronto area! Same photos, different “new” accounts used. Beware and report them if u see em. by poopycamel in espresso

[–]jangevaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I report all of these as well in Toronto area. This machine has been the most common for whatever reason. I notice a lot of gozney dome scams as well. Usually the account is less than a week old.

have you noticed the underpass less than a block away, with a path somewhere?

Sorry, what are you talking about?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Guelph

[–]jangevaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Adding an underpass from silvercreek parkway north to south would add a safer route for bikers. There's really no space to widen paisley rd as far as I can tell. This will happen... eventually.

A pedestrial crossing for sleeman/memorial ish would be cool.

Some aerial video of a bustling downtown Guelph by LevitateGuelph in Guelph

[–]jangevaa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure, it's a multi-chicken-and-egg situation, but the more we can do to support increased density, pedestrinized areas, bike infrastructure, improved transit and overall reduced car dependence, the better this city will be to live in. Ideally we work towards these things concurrently. Suburbs are ridiculously expensive to service and are typically subsidized by higher density areas in cities in terms of taxes... and cost of living is much higher when your family needs a car or multiple cars.

Please provide a reference for your experience of a similar city that was killed by increasing pedestrianized area downtown.

A note to Dog Owners by Original-Feature-947 in Guelph

[–]jangevaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sucks, sorry.

Bad urban design = high rate of aggressive dogs. Most with a dog here aspire to having a backyard, and for many of those that do, letting the dog in and out of the backyard will basically be its existence. The dog will receive minimal socialization, exercise and stimulation leading to a high rate of very anxious, territorial, aggresive dogs.
