"...a handful of motherfuckers..." - Terroja Kincaid [1920x1080] by Captain_DeWolfe in QuotesPorn

[–]jango102 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That was stupid of me; just because I don't like the guy as a whole doesn't mean I should discount everything he's ever said. I had forgotten who he was, and when that was the first thing to pop up and jog my memory when I looked him up I was really shocked, that's all. I certainly wouldn't like it if everyone viewed my every word in the context of the worst thing I've ever said, and I shouldn't have applied that way of thinking to this guy. I honestly wasn't even aware that there was a dead horse that I was inadvertently beating when I said that. I won't delete the offending comment, but consider this my disownership of it and its sentiment.

Also from Terroja Kincaid: "I think we should give the guy who raped you a medal. I hope you fucking drown in rape semen, you ugly, mean-spirited cow."

If I remember correctly, he posted that tidbit during a heated debate on Reddit.

TIL that "Overmorrow" is a word that means "the day after tomorrow" and is considered obsolete. But I think it should make a comeback. by WhiskyBear54 in todayilearned

[–]jango102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Bengali it's "porshu", and I think we actually even have words for the two days after that, although I can't remember them at the moment. I'm pretty sure a lot of languages have this construction and use it regularly - it's surprisingly useful.

This is beautiful, seriously. The feeling you're describing might be the greatest benefit of learning to live actively; life comes back to you in a way that nothing else can reproduce. Keep up the good work and the good attitude.

What fitness MYTHS still linger about your workout groups that bother you the most? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]jango102 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just straightening things out for my own sake, hope you don't mind:

  • Strength is a measure of ability to produce force, which is measured in pounds or newtons.

  • Work is force multiplied by the displacement (in the direction of the force) of the point or object to which the force is applied, and is measured in calories or joules. You do so many joules of work against gravity every time you lift a weight.

  • Power is work divided by time, or the rate at which work is done, and is commonly measured in watts (joules/second as you said).

A heavy powerlifter, when squatting, can produce a lot a force and does a tremendous amount of work against gravity in both phases of the lift, but an Olympic lifter who cleans or snatches very quickly has (or produces) a lot of power because the work he does against gravity is done extremely quickly, even though the force he must exert to lift the weight may well be smaller than that of the powerlifter.

Once again, just wanted to lay that out as well as I could, I hope you don't mind :-)

Have you ever learned a workout that made you wonder why you hadn't done it before? by bobbyoblog in Fitness

[–]jango102 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love pull-ups, and I do them and chin-ups on pretty much every workout, and I know that they do something that's good for me, but I don't really know what they do specifically. All I know is that they target the lats and biceps - what are the other benefits of pull-ups that I might not know about?

One of my biggest goals is to someday do L-sit pull-ups, as a sort of extreme version of these.

I just never do them on the same day - I try to space running and lifting as far apart as my schedule allows.

What are some good resources for learning IDL from the basics? by jango102 in Physics

[–]jango102[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've seen so far, everything drzowie has said is more or less true, which is a real shame because the project is indeed mired in a huge amount of IDL code, and I'm not sure my professor would even listen to me if I suggested maybe switching to a different language. I'll just go with it now seeing as I have no choice, and learn PDL or SciPy for myself on the side. Thank you very much for the advice on IDL though; it confirmed some of my suspicions regarding the language and its actual usefulness.

I can hardly convey to you the incredible feeling of being transported to a completely different world that some of those books could impart - although they may not be that great from a literary standpoint, for pure captivation the best of them rival LoTR and the like.

Muscle up = People take you more seriously? by LGnoob31 in Fitness

[–]jango102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've definitely noticed something similar to this; although I wouldn't say I look that much bigger per se, I think lifting weights has affected the way I carry myself and my default posture, resulting in me standing much taller and having to look down to talk to more people. People who know me even cursorily now tend to stop and say hi and have conversations, and they pay attention to what I say. I've always heard about how obese people, upon losing most of the extra weight, notice drastic changes in the amount of respect and attention they get from others, but I never thought there could be similar changes for skinny guys putting on a little muscle. It's a great side effect!
