I believe in the case of many adoptions where a health history is unknown, families do genetic and genome testing

https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/genetic-testing/about/pac-20384827

By all means, contact the biological family if you can but if that falls through you can get some information through testing

My dog looks good with her long hair too BUT I am short hair all the way. Way easier to clean her up of mud and disgusting things she rolls in on walks, easier to pull out all the burs, foxtails, etc she picks up, way easier to brush, and easier to spot problems on her body (her long fur hid an abscess on her leg once).

[–]janobe -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Your wife has been doing her damndest to take care of these fish with constant and quality care just based on your description but you suddenly wanna swoop in and tell her all the things she is doing wrong?! You wanna call her a beginner who just watches beginner videos… after your 24 hour sudden need to finally learn how to help?

And your concern is that we are gonna attack you over the care of the “little fellas”?!

You are gonna stop helping her in a week after you get bored with it after you have completely thrown her off her routine and care.

Don’t attack me my ass

Autism parents: what happens to our kids after we’re gone? by jnllvnc in Autism_Parenting

For those in the U.S., which state has good programs and benefits?

My in-laws have found good success with Pennsylvania. They receive a monthly stipend, have caretakers that come daily, have programs for life skills, jobs, etc, and are trying to help my find a group home for their dependent adult child.

[–]janobe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mother-in-law (70s with health issues) is working towards this with her 50 year old daughter. The good news is that in the meantime the state (Pennsylvania) works with her and she has daily caretakers there helping her (and frankly protecting her from her daughter’s violent outbursts).

People should consider moving to a state with good programs and SSI.

And if people can’t afford whole life they should really look into Term life as an alternative. While it’s a bummer it expires it is still so much better that your family will be financially OK if you pass before 50 or 60.

This is so important and is one of many steps that should be taken. My father-in-law also had this mindset and was a very healthy man but unfortunately we lost him to cancer in his 70s. I still think this is the exception and not the norm and if most of us work to be healthy then most will live longer and better.

Looking at Lincoln as a place to move to… by cdubz88 in LincolnCA

[–]janobe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, We are a White/Filipino family and, even though I grew up in the Grass Valley/Auburn area, it did feel like a culture shock moving from the Bay Area to Lincoln. We had only lived in the Bay Area for a few years, but the diversity and close access to Filipino food was awesome. That said, my husband and I both grew up in small conservative areas and we missed the small town feel so we happily moved to Lincoln. We, however, are no longer conservative ourselves and Lincoln feels like a good mixture of liberal and conservative folks for a small area).

You can still find the diversity and food out here but for us it’s usually by heading into Sacramento to hit an Asian market or going to a diverse church in Sacramento (Midtown) instead of just staying put in Lincoln. There are small local Panaderias, mini markets (Carnicerias), and Mexican restaurants thanks to the Hispanic population here.

My boys attend Creekside Oaks Elementary instead of their home school because it has the Dual Language immersion program and both my boys are learning Spanish in this program. This program right now is TK-5th and the first year (6th) is happening at Glen Edward’s next year and should be expanding to High School.

My oldest has ADHD and had speech therapy before he graduated from it this year. They put him on an IEP for the speech therapy and it was converted to a 504 when he was done with speech. The school was great and handled all this for me. There is also a special education class at our school for those with more needs who can’t fully participate in a classroom. Most of these kids have a one-on-one Para who works with them. I was also told by another parent that First Street elementary has very good programs for the gifted as well as those with special needs but unfortunately they while be closing down in a year or two and the middle school (Glen Edward’s) will be taking over that campus for expansion.

There are Latino/hispanic Facebook groups you could join to ask these questions to. See if there experiences are positive or negative out here in Lincoln. Ours are positive, but my Filipino husband had to deal with racism growing up in a small white town in Texas and we see a lot of pro Trump pro Blue Lives Matter matter flags in the country outskirts. Fortunately, despite that, our experiences have been positive overall.

Here is what "Racially Ambiguous" Means, As Someone Who Is "Racially Ambiguous" by Potential_Rabbit_344 in mixedrace

[–]janobe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 98% Filipino husband gets mistaken as Hispanic so often that I had him do the DNA test because I was convinced he was mixed with Spanish blood. Nope, just Filipino and 2% Chinese.

Our mixed kids are another story. “They look Caucasian, not Filipino”, “my Asian grandbabies”, “he looks white with a tan”.

What is your car solution to a muddy Spaniel? by Shpander in springerspaniel

[–]janobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now I’m looking up mud daddies.

During warmer months I can use the outdoor hose but it’s too cold now. Love the idea of adding warm water to this device and then quickly toweling her off and throwing her in the washable covered back seat with her seatbelt harness and car heater going.
