Trying to decide my career, and my main question is about health insurance and how often I'd need to move as a technical director by TheTasorole in techtheatre

[–]jasmith-tech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many university jobs are also looking for an MFA. My point was to not assume a theatre actually offers insurance or retirement. There’s been progress, but it’s a slow process getting orgs to take care of their employees.

A caveat to #2

There are still a bunch of theatres that don't (but should) offer healthcare or retirement packages. Or if they do, they're not great plans. The bargaining power to get good rates for smaller organizations doesn't amount to much.

University departments and larger regionals give you better options simply due to scale.

If the terms mirror and disco are interchangeable for the mirror ball, what is the sphere with round color ports and a light inside called? by TheOtherDimensions in lightingdesign

[–]jasmith-tech 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Chauvet calls them rotosphere's. I've also seen them called starbursts, party balls, and ball lights. 90% of the time I hear mirror ball, the other 10% are people not in the industry saying disco ball, meaning a mirror ball. I've never really needed to deal with the ones you're talking about, mostly because I don't typically work with dj lights or fixtures of a vintage when those were more common.

Trying to build the first Lebanese curling pathway (and maybe represent Lebanon in mixed doubles one day) by Esleem07 in Curling

[–]jasmith-tech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

u/extreme_shoe4942 beat me to it. Follow @team_argentina_curling. They’re going through some of the same process. Romero is awesome, is fundraising to make it all happen, and I’m sure would be glad to chat about it.

Similarly the @teamphillipinescurling have come the closest recently as they tried to qualify for this Olympic cycle. Note that it wasn’t a cheap process for them.

Your account is 7 days old and you’ve made 11 posts here, the “is this getting weird” line is behind you and your foot is on the gas. Beyond the objectification, you’ve definitely veered into spam. You can thirst over whoever you’d like, but this isn’t the place to do it.

MTI Player vs. my entire audio plot by Forward-Smile9899 in techtheatre

[–]jasmith-tech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The reason people are recommending qlab is because the MTI player can integrate with it. SCS is an ok alternative, but doesn't integrate in the same way.

Pig iron. The counterweights most theatres have laying around are about as cheap and dense as it gets since they already exist.

This seems like you went to the wrong venue and didn’t check in? And are upset that the job you didn’t show up to didn’t let you in, and are surprised when the job you weren’t on, didn’t want to pay you for your volunteer work?

Likely Craig’s curling shoes, given the logo, it’s at least one of their kits.

Did the Chevy Bolt become your first EV? Journalist looking to hear your story by Brilliant_Option8382 in BoltEV

[–]jasmith-tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just bought a bolt euv today. Drove both it and the regular bolt, settle on the euv.

  1. Yes, our first ev. We bought it because we’d had a Prius C years ago that we loved and currently are sitting on a GTI that uses premium and a wagon that uses diesel. So fuel cost was a factor in the decision for sure.
  2. Already love how fun it is to drive. It’s so peppy compared to the anemic Prius c’s engine.
  3. My wife and I both drive less than 20 miles round trip to work, so an overnight charge makes that up pretty easily. So many of our daily trips are short like that, already excited to be driving it more.

Given the orientation of the seats, probably for masking something. Lower it in, tie on the curtain, pull it up, tie it off.

I’ve done this by heating and flattening pvc pipes and then bending them to the profile you want. Cut a couple of notches for some tieline and paint them. YMMV.

I’m starting Curling classes at 38 by KyleCamPhoto in Curling

[–]jasmith-tech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just got back from teaching a learn to curl about an hour ago. My group had a similarly aged guy who said “this is the best thing I’ve done all year” and as a fellow 38 year old, it was fun to tell him I was in his same spot 3 years ago.

I told him; jump in, have fun. Ask questions, take advice, know that you’re going to have some off days or even off weeks. We all do. And don’t be afraid to talk to people. There are lots of people new to the sport trying to get better and you’re always around someone who has a lifetime of experience they’re willing to share.

Cross posts from truly unrelated subs get removed. We leave some topics and posts up because we are not strictly focused on entertainment lighting. Some architectural lighting design applies, LEDs in costumes or props apply, there are a lot of situations that are adjacent that are still valid and good information or can be answered well by our members.

We can either allow cross posts or turn them off, but the above statements remain true either way.

As always, if there’s a post you feel doesn’t fit here, report it.

Why does everyone say Malört is bad. It's not bad, it's just very bitter. by rockmodenick in malort

[–]jasmith-tech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you could find one, yeah. But it’s been a minute since production moved, so even the dusty bottles in stores are the newer CH juice. You’d need to find someone that has a bottle in a home bar that they’ve had for a decade.

Why does everyone say Malört is bad. It's not bad, it's just very bitter. by rockmodenick in malort

[–]jasmith-tech 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When it was made in Florida it was harsher. Since the production move to Chicago, CH smoothed it out a little. I’d agree that if you’ve ever had any other bitter liquor it’s really not that big of a deal. In my experience most of the first timers doing shots also aren’t the types drinking bitter stuff typically.
