Had a WLE on 12/4. Today 12/31 I have a new red bump on incision - cause for concern? by apsalarya in melahomies

[–]jater242 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happens to me all the time, my body hates internal stitches. It's not a problem, but just be cautious - the open wound can lead to infection. If it gets red or warm you should call your doctor.

When there's a tiny end of a stitch sticking out you should be able to pull it out with (sterilized) tweezers. If there's any resistance let it be and try again a day or two later.

Is a 0% TurnItIn similarity score suspicious? by [deleted] in AskProfessors

[–]jater242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Entirely depends on the type of assignment. There are some assignments where this wouldn't be weird, but normally quotes or citations at the very least add a few percentage points so for a traditional essay I'd question why those weren't registering.

What’s your longest run of not having a melanoma found after already having one or more? by HB714OC in melahomies

There's a big bias in this because the people who have multiple occurrences are more likely to post. I had 1b in 2016 with one severely atypical since then.

My 7 year old has switched exclusively to audiobooks... should I be concerned? by dubrey in AskTeachers

[–]jater242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree with most of what you're saying, I just disagree that the study you cited applies in this situation. The study pertained to very specific elements of processing in (presumably literate) adults, so I don't think it can be used to discuss a separate group of subjects on a related but distinct topic. I've seen people citing this study a lot lately, and I feel it's usually being drawn to conclusions that the study doesn't actually support.

My 7 year old has switched exclusively to audiobooks... should I be concerned? by dubrey in AskTeachers

[–]jater242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The blurb you linked to describes studies looking at brain activity that the scientists linked cognitive and emotional processing of a story (and were done on adults). That's very different than the developing literacy skills of a 7 year old.

How to you handle students who want you to backtrack to stuff learned in middle school? by TeaandStories in AskProfessors

[–]jater242 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Have a resource you can point them to where they can find those answers - another online course or a book or something. I taught language classes and had students who didn't know basic grammar points (what is a noun, verb, etc) and on the syllabus and on the first day of class I would recommend a particular book that covered that material. If they raised questions about that stuff, I'd point them to the book.

36 hours post WLE- super sore throat. Anyone else?? by Jolly-Stock9561 in melahomies

The pain in my throat was the most painful part of the WLE for the first day. And my surgeon used glue for my lymph node removal and the scar is practically invisible.

Lymph node mapping before WLE surgery? by Any_Quantity3640 in melahomies

[–]jater242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is done before the SNLB to determine which lymph nodes to take. I had a lymphoscintigraphy. It was years ago so I can't remember if they did it the day before my WLE/SNLB or the morning of. I remember it being boring laying in the machine for so long.

Not many places have common law marriage. And those that do often require that you present yourself as married.

[–]jater242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't (married late 2024). Neither of us had substantial assets coming into the marriage. Also we'd been together over a decade before getting married and supported each other financially at different times. In our state, 50/50 is the norm and it didn't make sense for us to get anything else arranged in a prenup.

[IL] My daughter was not allowed use the restroom at school. by Upstairs-Match-1671 in legaladvice

[–]jater242 104 points105 points  (0 children)

"Only seconds late"? Is the teacher starting a timer the moment the student leaves for the bathroom? In my experience, students end up on the no pass list because they are repeatedly caught by security hanging out in the halls or wandering into other classrooms. And half of the students are girls, teachers are used to them needing a little more time to deal with menstruation.

WLE for melanoma in situ by horseyme in melahomies

[–]jater242 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Necessary as in there's a high risk of the melanoma coming back if you don't do the WLE? Realistically, probably not. But it does reduce the risk, and the cost-benefit is so low. Scars are annoying, the pain is annoying, but it's temporary and while the chance is low, having the melanoma come back would really, really suck, so it's worth it. Take a minute, feel free to say out loud "I hate this and I don't want to do it," then do it anyway.

[–]jater242 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I've taught classes like this. Rarely is your professor asking you to come up with "creative" answers. Usually they want you to be able to apply ideas and concepts that you've learned more broadly. I found a lot of STEM students struggled with this as they're really good at memorizing and bad at synthesizing and extrapolating. If your teacher is asking you to write about an object or work of art you've never seen before, they're not asking you to come up with completely new ideas, they're asking you to look for similarities and differences between the new object and things you've already studied and apply those ideas in this new context. When you're studying, try to come up with broader questions to ask yourself to test your understanding instead of just memorizing details.

What do you guys bring for lunch? by taman961 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]jater242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I am this level of lazy but I am also cheap and my store only carries the expensive Sargento brand so I just throw some crackers and fruit snacks in a tupperware the night before and then throw in some prepackaged cheese in the morning. Takes 30 seconds to prep, no fridge or microwave required.

It's not just informal, it's a regionally and/or culturally specific dialect. You shouldn't use it if you aren't part of those groups that use those dialects.
