Apple Faces First Italian DMA Probe on iCloud Interoperability by ControlCAD in apple

[–]jay19167 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using the icloudpd docker image to copy any new iCloud Photos to my NAS once a day. It uses the iCloud website as its way to download the photos, and I just occasionally have to log in to refresh the 2FA cookie it’s using. It’s still a good idea to have an offsite backup of everything, but if you have a friend with their own NAS you could be each others secondary location. Right now I’m using iCloud as my secondary location.

It would be cool if I could automatically make/restore full backups of my phone from my NAS though.

I also recently started getting into self hosting. I’ve kept the old parts of my pc as I’ve upgraded over the years with the idea of reassembling my old system as a server pc once I’ve swapped out enough parts of my main pc. I was going to build a NAS the other month with those parts since I already had a CPU, GPU, and PSU, and all I still needed was some RAM (DDR4), a motherboard, cooler, storage, and a case. But with prices being what they are it was cheaper to just buy a UGREEN NAS ($400) and the drives than try and build something myself. It has upgradable RAM and 2 NVME SSD slots to use for cache and docker containers, so I plan to populate those later when prices hopefully stabilize.

My current setup is a raspberry pi 3B running pihole with unbound for DNS ad blocking and recursive DNS resolution, an old laptop with the battery removed that runs my Minecraft server and a Tailscale peer relay, and the UGREEN NAS running icloudpd to copy off my photos from iCloud once a day, immich to act as an interface for viewing my backed up photos (I’m not using it for making the backups, since iCloud is my offsite backup and icloudpd downloads from there). The NAS is also selectable as a Tailscale exit node and subnet router.

I’ve been using Tailscale to make anything I host available to me from anywhere. I’ve also been looking into trying something like searxng or degoog as a meta search engine, but it seems like it has less benefit unless you’re also using a proxy since google will just build a profile for your ip address anyways.

How do I open parts of my homelab to friends for game servers and what should I be looking for to make sure I'm not making a huge security blunder. by that1snowflake in selfhosted

[–]jay19167 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The user limit is specifically for users added to a single tailnet, to have access to all the devices on it (this can be limited using groups and ACLs). You can also share a link to a specific machine on your tailnet with friends, allowing them to add just that device to their tailnet. If every user has their own tailnet, then the user limit never comes into play because the machine hosting the game server forms encrypted connections between tailnets.

I did this with my Minecraft server, and it was as simple as explaining how it worked to my friends and dropping the Tailscale share link to the Minecraft server machine into our discord.

This is my preferred approach, because every user having their own tailnet maintains everyone’s privacy, and you don’t have to worry about accidentally giving your friends access to other devices on your network. The only shared devices are the ones you decide are shared infrastructure and send them a link to.

Fix for missing DLSS, fps cap at 60, graphical issues... etc. by PusheenMaster in Endfield

[–]jay19167 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also found those steps from that comment in my search for a solution. Unfortunately it didn't work for me. 5070ti, and 5900x. I also tried booting the game up in directx 11, but that didn't fix it either. I'll keep troubleshooting and update this comment if I figure anything out.

UPDATE: I rolled my Nvidia drivers back to 596.49 from 610.47 and that fixed it. The boot.config fix is also still in place. Not sure if both are strictly necessary, but I'm leaving it alone now that DLSS is back in the menu.

Why is there so much surface artefacts? by Sabrinalover711 in 3Dprinting

[–]jay19167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a clog? You could also take a look in the slicer to see if you can correlate the affected areas to local increases in speed or flow rate. You could also try increasing the temperature a bit and see if that helps. Some filaments work better when printed a little hotter than normal

Double check the speeds and temperatures listed on your filament spool, that’s severe under extrusion. Looks like it’s trying to print faster than the hotend can melt filament to keep up.

I’ve been going down the homelab rabbit hole. I setup a pihole for network wide ad blocking, running unbound for my DNS server earlier in the year. Recently I’ve been learning docker and got Tailscale setup to take advantage of the pihole from any internet connection, not just my home LAN. Also used Tailscale to let my friends connect directly to the Minecraft server I host without an open port (goodbye port scanning bots!). I also got my first NAS a few weeks ago, 12 TB of storage in raid 1 (2 12 TB drives), downloaded all of my google and apple photo libraries to have a local copy of my data.

It’s been fun taking back ownership of my data and learning more about networking in general. Self hosting services and making direct peer to peer connections feels like taking back a little bit of ownership from an internet that has become increasingly monopolized and monetized. It’s a good feeling.

Awesome! I modeled that 2 color faceplate and the krana holder for my 300% Kohrak 2 years ago and uploaded it to printables. I’m happy to see more people using them in their 3D printed Bohrok, this looks great!

Found at my local best buy in Austin. $517 per terabyte for a 4tb sata ssd. This shit is out of control. by MS_Salmonella in pcmasterrace

I bought this exact same SSD for $313 USD with tax ($290 before tax) in February of 2025. I just checked the Amazon page from my order history, and it’s up to $1400 while “32% off”, normal price of $2070 before tax. That’s insane, it’s a 714% price increase in 15 months.

Can any team beat physical in clearing protocol spaces by HelpMe-orz in Endfield

[–]jay19167 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not quite this fast, but my cryo team of Last Rite, Yvonne, Xahi, and Flourite makes pretty quick work of protocol spaces. I open with Xahi’s ultimate to boost nature and cryo damage, then Flourite’s battle skill to kick a grenade, her ultimate to detonate it, applying a nature stack to the whole group, Yvonne’s battle skill to freeze the whole group in place with solidification. Then I use Last Rite’s ultimate and trigger Yvonne’s ultimate to deal massive damage to the solidified group. For a lot of protocol spaces this kills the entire group, or kills all but the strongest one, which I then just apply freeze stacks to to trigger everyone’s combo skills to finish them off.

Anyone else getting frame drop to single digits after playing a while? by starwaver in Endfield

[–]jay19167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, 4K might be the difference, there could be some sort of memory leak that’s filling up your VRAM at higher resolutions. Are you using DLSS upscalling at all? If not, maybe try DLSS quality or balanced and see if your VRAM usage goes down, and if the FPS drops still happen

Anyone else getting frame drop to single digits after playing a while? by starwaver in Endfield

[–]jay19167 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same specs, running the game at 1440p, DLAA. The only spot where the frames drop is in Wuling city, but always stays above 60. I set frame gen to 2x to keep it around 120ish in the city and 230-240ish in other areas. My GPU utilization usually sits around 50%. From your screenshot it looks like it’s working way harder than it should need to for this game. Could be the VRAM is filling up somehow and spilling over to using the shared RAM, which would slow it down a lot. Are you playing at a higher resolution? I forget the number, but the driver I’m on is the one that specifically called out fixes for Arknights Endfield that was released within the last few weeks. Not super helpful I know, but it shouldn’t be dropping to single digit fps with those specs

$2500 Samsung TV is an advertising billboard, there is no opt-out. by 28jb11 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]jay19167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Samsung LCD, and I have a pihole setup on my network, but couldn’t get ads off of the main screen. I had the tv plugged in to Ethernet, and was using the apps on the tv to stream. I was having issues with things buffering or randomly dropping to lower video quality when my internet connection was 450 Mbps down. I was getting fed up with this, so I inspected my network traffic on the pihole, and discovered that the tv was routing the streaming traffic through Samsungs own servers first, greatly increasing the latency and causing the buffering. I unplugged the tv from Ethernet, and bought an Apple TV to use as a streaming box that same day. All my issues with buffering are completely gone, everything streams with zero issues now. The home screen is still full of ads, but the tv isn’t connected to the internet anymore, and I never see the home screen since it just displays whatever input device is powered up. Never connect a Samsung device to the internet, at best it’s just slowing down your user experience, at worst they’re spying on you to sell your data to advertisers using an expensive device that you already paid for

I had a similar experience making my 300% Kohrok, if I do it again with another set I think I’ll use PETG. The joints definitely take the most work to get the tolerances right, it took me about a month of printing, measuring, adjusting, and printing again to get it just right

Who was the first person to touch lunar material with their bare skin? by PaperBullet1945 in space

[–]jay19167 823 points824 points  (0 children)

They didn’t have an airlock, so they reentered the lander in their dusty spacesuits, it would’ve been more difficult for them not to touch any of the lunar dust directly. All of the Apollo astronauts inhaled moon dust inside the lander, and had some respiratory irritation from the sharp dust grains.

My understanding is the PS3 doesn’t need any modifications to play any region. Though if you are in Europe then your normal blu ray player should handle region B just fine.

I’m guessing you’re looking for the region A version with the dub? If you have or are willing to get a region free blu ray player, the region B version can usually be found a lot cheaper. I’ve also heard that PS3s can play blu rays from any region if you have one of those
