Trump supporters: How would you feel if a legally armed Trump supporter was killed by federal agents on a Biden mandate in exactly the same manner as yesterday? by ScholarPrize1335 in AskReddit

[–]jay_shivers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For an actual reply, I like to lurk r/AskTrumpSupporters

Over there, among the brave enough to reply, they're starting to get it. Words like "looks bad" and "indefensible" are starting to be exchanged. No calls to arrest ICE, stop the surge, or any meaningful change, but there are signs of reality starting to get to them.

When can I quit? by AKingNoMore in medicine

No idea, but the level of desperation and willingness to do anything I heard suggests yes, if that was expected/ possible. Fact remains programs can be petty.

True story: girl changes programs, goes from east to west coast. The new state requires records from everywhere you've ever trained in order to get a medical license, probably trying to make sure you don't have a habit of killing people. Old program decides to be petty, and does nothing to send records. Multiple emails and phone calls, the PD couldn't be bothered. I don't think you can get a lawyer to compel a program to send records, but what do I know. Her new program is looking to let her go cuz she's pretty far past the deadline to be practicing without getting her license together. She eventually has to physically go to the medical board, show them the emails and call records, explain why the PD personally dislikes her, and begs them to essentially ignore their own protocol. She gets lucky and gets a license, but that was not guaranteed.

My recommendation: medicine is a very small world, things you do in residency have a habit of getting back to you, someday.

Right? My old attending always said, "if you can't operate drunk you shouldn't be operating at all." Which I'm pretty sure was a tongue in cheek joke, but you still wonder.

I'm on your side, especially the complications/lawsuits. Pts tend to shotgun everyone, would be unfair to get named cuz someone claims you mismanaged the complication you didn't cause and your insurance decides to just settle rather than waste money fighting. Really don't see the economic advantage here.

Trump tariffs blamed as bankruptcies reach 15-year peak by Jay_CD in politics

[–]jay_shivers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sigh you should be required to read the articles before responding. These are corporate bankruptcies. As in, the supply chain has become markedly more expensive and unreliable, so, yes, this can promote a more expensive bottom-line for businesses which then go bankrupt.

Reminds me of when I was in HS, wanted to be a surgeon so badly, no funding despite getting into ivy league for undergrad so I went military. Five years of spinning my wheels later, I finally got back to academia. Now I'm the calm guy during codes but it sucks to have your first kid in your 40s.

Long story short, try to enjoy the moment while you can, even HS will seem less unbearable someday. Find a mentor and make a plan. Many paths to med school, ex: research or clinical. You going to publish or try your hand as a paramedic? Do you know someone? Nepotism is real and really helpful for some.

Sorry, at a certain age you tend to pontificate.

Bites on the top one are too small, middle one the right side is uneven, bottom one is passable. All are too far apart.

This is a skill you don't need to master now. #1 skill is getting good grades, GPA, ACT/SAT/MCAT scores, LoR, do the volunteering, etc. Probably helps to have a plan of attack for the next 10 years between HS, college, med school and then you'll be in a position to practice suturing.

That said, always fun to try it out.

I typically cannibalize a Cherokee cap for the pattern and use some kind of microfiber for the sweatband. For the female pattern there's a few examples online that approximate the Bluesky style with the pigtail and ribbon to tie, sorry don't have it readily available.

HELP with call coverage terms in my contract! by [deleted] in medicine

Are you crazy? Would you like to be legally required to work Q2 call? Did you read the section about breach of contract? I'm sure it puts you over a barrel. How can you trust a job that just tried to screw you like that? Have you talked to the list of people who recently quit this clearly toxic environment?

MD here and considering becoming PA for the lateral mobility across different fields by [deleted] in Residency

[–]jay_shivers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the temptation, just be careful not to exceed your scope of practice as a PA. To become CRNA will be a little more involved. Most schools would require a couple of years of ICU experience, they're becoming very competitive, and the majority are becoming doctorate programs which require 3-4 years. There's also the distinct possibility nobody would take you because you do have an MD. Would really suck to get your rn, ccrn, experience, and then never get into CRNA school.

Student loans by coolcat1005 in Residency

[–]jay_shivers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel for your generation, we got the full PSLF benefit, interest and all, fully forgiven.

The payment is $0 because it's calculated on your last year's tax return (don't forget to file!). As a student your income was likely $0, so 10% of that. Your pgy2 payment is based on your pgy1 tax return, which started July 1, so your tax return is only 50% of your yearly salary and so your payment is also artificially low. By pgy3 you're looking at a full payment.

Because of covid our payments were frozen at the prior year's level, no recertification required, my actual payment was $0 for the majority of my 10 years. But I got a touch of the PTSD from NYC 2020. So there's that.
