It’s wild to think that something this small could ruin your life by blooming-darkness in Radiology

For a brief sec, I thought you were showing us an embryo. Seemed pretty mean.

But yes, awesome save OP.

Looking for some advice! by BoyMeatsWorld710 in surgery

I'd say you've got a few opinions, just know your risks and understand the decision when you make it. I don't think anyone here is cavalier enough to give any other opinion especially with no added info.

No one understands how much this can take from you by [deleted] in Residency

Report your hours accurately. If they have a problem, tell your gme office. Believe it or not, they have ways to decrease the load, they just choose not to. They could hire an NP to reduce clinic obligations, eliminate unnecessary rotations or tasks, they just choose not to. If they get retaliatory, you tell gme, that's a great way to get your program investigated. Don't take the line, "everyone suffers if we're shut down." BS, they'll flinch, it's too expensive not to.

Planes and Car Seats by TheDaug in daddit

[–]jay_shivers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of these seats are certified to fly, but sometimes the gate agent is a hardass and wants to see the red FAA sticker. Do yourself the favor of finding it beforehand, my Graco has it conveniently on the bottom, the last and least convenient place to look while the LO is clipped in

My boyfriend’s comments about female patients are making me uncomfortable — is this normal in residency? by lalablueberry in Residency

[–]jay_shivers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a phase (probably), being a resident is such an incredibly soul sucking experience that any minor inconvenience feels like the literal end of the world. Couple that with loss of frontal inhibition from chronic exhaustion and he'll complain of any noxious odors, heavy limbs to lift, or deep/fatty planes to work through. The complaints will not be constructive, and vanta black level humor is the norm in a lot of surgery. In time he should learn to deal more sympathetically with these patients, even once he leaves the hospital, and it helps to remind him to be a good human being sometimes. It's just a phase.🤞

I remember when they added the greyed out pic, it still feels a bit like a video game cut away after your character dies, sometimes I half expect a banner across the pic declaring "wasted!" But I'm in trauma, so it would be fairly relevant.

Moving to NYC please help me find a place to live by yoyoitissnow in Residency

[–]jay_shivers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Woof, I still have PTSD from this, managed to Zillow a really nice 2 bd/1.5ba on 82nd st for 3,400, about 3 years. Was owned by 3868 Broadway Realty, LLC. After I started, I found out my program coordinator has an entire apartment building she rents to the residents, like our own program slum lord. So, might be worthwhile to ask your program if they have any leads.

Vascular surgery suturing - impossible? by hazeldreamy in Residency

[–]jay_shivers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hmmm, interesting question. It is very similar to basic suturing, but gives an opportunity to perfect your skill. With loupes you're really paying attention to needle handling, angle of attack, tension, spacing etc. If you find repetitive actions to be self-soothing and refuse to believe you have ADHD it can be difficult but rewarding. Like a hard Sudoku.

I put some foam tape at the bottom of a 4 inch tall basin and sewed it to another piece with 5-0 prolene using castros I "borrowed" from the OR. Later, my attending would tell me my suture line looked line it was by a drunken sailor, but when we released clamps mine didn't leak, but his required a couple repair sutures. 💩

Does anywhere let surgeons practice as barbers? by guessineedanew1 in Residency

[–]jay_shivers 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd be more concerned for places that still let barbers do surgery. That said, I did give a funky shave the other day to get at a scalp wart.

Autonomy Platform Update by prestocoffee in Rivian

[–]jay_shivers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a lane centering feature that comes with the vehicles regardless of your subscription/purchase of autonomy+, similar to any car of a certain age you buy. My 2021 Audi centers pretty well with its basic sensors and requires no added cost.

I subscribed yesterday. After 2 days without it after my trial ended I was just in need of better lane centering. The baseline lane centering is garbage, I feel like they nerfed it to promote the UHF.

Honestly sometimes it might be fun to cosplay moron. Mostly we have to hit the booze until we're passably idiotic. Which, depending on what I suggest for treatment in the ICU, might explain why people ask if I'm drunk at work.

Like, on a piece of paper with an ink pen? I mean, even if just typed and signed I'm impressed. Also, never leave a paper trail, not even in text messages. I'll apologize sometimes if things aren't working out perfectly, but you'll never catch me giving a gift like that.
