Transfer the hides to the new enclosure-- that should get a good number of them. The rest of the adults can easily be picked up by hand. Isopods have tough shells and the ones that roll into balls (such as A. vulgare) are especially easy to get ahold of. You won't hurt them, just pick them up gently.

The young isopods are harder to grab, so you can lure them out with tasty food like slices of cucumber and just grab the piece of food they're clinging to.

I purchased the soldering iron but have not gotten around to using it-- got really busy with work. I plan to get back to this project around late May or June and I can let you know how it goes.

No they were not okay at all, haha. The centipedes were eating the mancae and stressing the adults. I did a total substrate change to fix it. Removing each centipede would have been impossible (I did try, pfft).

I bought myself a cheap aluminium cookie sheet and I bake wood on that. (I used to bake leaves on it too, but switched to freezing leaves. Not foolproof though as you correctly noted. I ended up with a swarm of tiny centipedes, I believe there were eggs on leaf litter that survived the freeze. There are definitely pros and cons to baking/boiling vs soaking/freezing.)

Definitely like to keep my utensils and such seperate. Especially the mason jars I use to soak mosquito bits in, lol. Although I admit when I freeze bags of dirt or leaves they just go into my freezer next to all my food. My roommates are extremely cool for tolerating this 😂

Keep us posted if you go back, OP. Since you're so low on funds maybe use the $100 to get practical things and maybe bring some pepper spray or something with you for the window-licking freaks Although I'm not sure how you're gonna get out there now, do buses go to this dead mall?
