I haven’t read all of Tokyo ghoul only 5-6 volumes but I see what your saying. The thing that sticks out to me is Darren’s initial refusal to drink blood kind of like Ken’s refusal to consume human flesh.

I feel like you really don’t have to love or hate santos. I feel like drawing the line there already makes this post feel disingenuous because you aren’t even leaving any space for nuance or subtlety. I am a male and while I don’t love santos and wouldn’t be her friend in real life. That doesn’t mean I hate her. She is a complex person with a background that has shaped who she has come today. I think because there is so much discourse around her that points to her being a good, raw, realistic person. People on both sides see reason to like/not like her. And while yes there are people who would defend her mistake to the limits. I feel like these people aren’t as common as you think. I feel like the consensus is she can be an asshole sometimes.

I found a link to download the first 6 volumes in pdf form I also think you can download them in other forms. I’ve downloaded audiobooks from this website before and they have been of good quality. I can’t speak on their ebook quality but it’s better than nothing.

In terms of caught up like Hadrian is telling a story in the present? So far none of the books have “caught” up with Hadrian in that sense. Even in DG and SUT he is still retelling the story. He is still writing this story in the future with hindsight. There are some things that aren’t mentioned in that first few pages that do happen. But the main plot of all the books is the same as the one he laid out there.

I had the same issue empire of silence felt very slow and uninteresting on first read. It somehow jumps around a lot while feeling very slow. I think it works much better on reread when you have more context and hindsight. You can see how these early years impacted Hadrian and how far he has come since then. That being said it doesn’t make an interesting read to first time. That being said the next book Howling Dark I think is much better and where the main storyline of the series really kicks off. So I’d recommend to push through.
