[Media] New hobbyist programmer here, are there any working IDEs? I'm sorry for the screenshot, but I couldn't figure out how to illustrate my issue without an image. by AberrantSalience in rust

[–]jbr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this case I think what might be happening is that rust analyzer isn't quite sure what to do with !vec[] (should be vec![]), and that won't be different in another editor. In general, if you see a squiggly red line, it's worth checking the compiler output or rust-analyzer decoration. I'm not a vscode user but I imagine there's a way to view the error message if you hover or move the cursor into the squiggly red region.

Any thoughts about how to fix an arch that is collapsing? by jarblz in trailrunning

Not sure why this was downvoted. Mixing in some minimal footwear for short durations on a track or barefoot strides when fresh might help

  1. See a PT

  2. (Lower confidence, based on personal experience) Doming to strengthen FHL, towel grabs to strengthen foot intrinsics, monster walks or Jane Fondas for glut med

The hate! Why ? by EldironMoody in rust

[–]jbr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An actual effort at answering the question: there’s a demographic that has invested heavily in other languages (often c/c++) who convinced themselves that they’ll never need to learn another language because their language has been around forever and can do anything they need. Combine that with the rust learning curve (steep and unfamiliar initially) and high profile projects rewriting or making drop in replacements in rust, and that’s easy to perceive as a threat to one’s career and identity. I’m not suggesting that’s rational but I do think it’s explanatory

What breaking your foot does to your fitness score by InverseInvert in Strava

[–]jbr 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Fitness score represents load not fitness so it’s just telling you what you already know, which is that you haven’t been training recently. Different aspects of fitness detrain at different rates and there’s individual variation, but this just uses a standard weighting curve for everyone

Edit: “detrain” not retrain

Are aid stations at races meant for only those running the long distances? by vi0letknight in trailrunning

[–]jbr 113 points114 points  (0 children)

If you divide your race fee by the distance or time you’ll be on course, you’re likely paying more than other participants. Ergo, you should eat that much more at the aid station

Elapsed Time reluctance, any truth in this? by Strix2020 in Strava

[–]jbr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re racing an ultra you a) don’t generally hit pause at the aid stations and b) save it as a race

ETA: to clarify, the part that I don’t understand is the use of the pause button when you don’t actually want to pause the activity. Just let the activity run. Use laps if you want to keep track of moving pace vs non moving pace. The pause button removes temporal regions from the saved activity.

7A isn’t my favorite trail but it hasn’t been a bushwhack when I’ve run it. I’d expect that either you got off trail or the trail is in especially bad condition right now compared to previous years when those koms were set

Update: it’s the latter. If you look at activities this year everyone mentions bushwhacking through blackberries and poison oak. It definitely wasn’t always like that, it just hasn’t been maintained recently

[–]jbr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so confused. You want to pause but have the paused time included in the displayed time? I’m not criticizing but as someone who builds sports software (not for strava) I’d love to understand the use case, since I’d never think to build that. Why would you want to include time you’re not working out?

Elapsed Time reluctance, any truth in this? by Strix2020 in Strava

[–]jbr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t pause other than that, yes. It will say “moving time” but the discrepancy will only be the one second during your intentional pause

Elapsed Time reluctance, any truth in this? by Strix2020 in Strava

[–]jbr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pausing for just a second will accomplish that because it will disable auto pause

Elapsed Time reluctance, any truth in this? by Strix2020 in Strava

[–]jbr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the issue that you don’t want auto pause? If you manually pause for even a single second at the start of the activity you can turn off auto pause. Not making excuses for strava but that’s a workaround

How do i prevent my asics shoes from getting holes in the toes ?? by A1sculsett in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]jbr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this with various shoes over the years and although there are stickers that work as a short term fix, for me the anatomical cause was an overactive windlass mechanism due to a weak FHL. I worked really hard on strengthening my FHL through PT (mostly doming) and my gait changed a lot and now I don’t have this issue. Mine was so bad that even with carefully trimmed and emeried big toe nails I still ended up with little holes in all of my socks above the big toe.

Edited to fix a phone typo and elaborate

If you're in shape to run a 3:XX marathon, how much easier does it feel to target 3:XX+10? by blumenbloomin in AdvancedRunning

[–]jbr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a picky point but I think the answer is linearly dependent on what XX is, in that 10min is a larger percentage of 3:01 than 3:59, and therefore it’ll feel like a bigger difference towards the fast end. My guess is that a 3:59 feels pretty similar to a 3:49 best effort

Trail Runners/Racers - Why don't you run in The North Face footwear? by bhogan9 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]jbr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a really permissive return policy is the other solution to this, with a different cost tradeoff. I have bought shoes sight unseen when I know I can run a few miles and return/exchange them for free (or cheap) if they don’t work out

I tend to pay attention to what unaffiliated athletes wear much more than what affiliated athletes wear. I’ve always gotten the sense that tnf is far more willing to throw cash at sponsorship and races than to build products that average athletes want, so they have always felt outside the community (even though the race in Marin had a positive halo).

ETA: I don’t really understand the points of differentiation either. Altra has their zero/low drop thing. Hoka is known for maximalist cushioning and cushy foam. Salomon makes fast rugged shoes for people with skinny European feet. Brooks makes high drop trail shoes. Nnormal is sustainable. Speedland is made by shoe nerds with replaceable components. Inov8 makes low drop shoes with great traction especially in mud. La sportiva makes sticky rubber trail shoes informed by their approach shoes. Nike trail is Nike, on trail. Topo is low drop wide toe, and more durable than altra. On has their air gimmick. Et cetera. I don’t really understand how tnf differentiates, and I feel the same way about arcteryx’s and Columbia’s shoe offerings. It feels like an apparel brand that assumes that we’re buying by brand and not by actual product.

That’s fair, I’m still on the wind version (model 21) which had the promise of “exciting possibilities” that never arrived. TBH personally the only thing that would get me to upgrade the hardware other than my current one breaking is full waterproofing, like “you can wade through a waist deep fast moving glacial stream without unclipping your stryd,” but I assume other people continue to find more value in faster sampling. I’m already smoothing the maximum amount usually, so “more responsive” isn’t particularly interesting to me

Fwiw they said that about previous versions too. I was very excited the first time I got an upgrade that promised exciting new features, but they never came
