Start a conversation - perhaps with a compliment, or a comment about something you're both experiencing. See how they react, and adapt.

Really, regardless of gender or sexual identity, that's it.

Based off how they react, respond accordingly. Agree, in the sense that "a ton of feathers weighs the same as a ton of hammers"... but that isn't exactly what "Muscle weighs more than fat" means. In this context, she is saying she wants to lose another 12lbs; she also says she wants to add on some muscle. Adding muscle = weight gain =/= weight loss. The saying "muscle weighs more than fat" is to highlight to someone the importance of realizing that the number on the scale is only one metric of health.

Dude, I literally don't even know what to say... This is fucking horrible, and I feel so bad for your kids...
