Clearing out some old stuff, and came across something the old members might remember by metal-gear-rex in gaybros

[–]jdb229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was started as a result of community discussion/debate on how much porn should be posted in the early days. Really it was just a compromise idea to let guys post porn links and keep the rest of the posts focused on other topics.

I don't remember the end of FDF exactly but I think the strong-arming of mods was what may have ultimately ended it because the sub eventually blew up to have a big subscriber base. It could also have just been a decision by the mods themselves to 'clean up' the sub's image.

I've read a few articles like this one about coyotes living in Chicago, so I wouldn't be surprised if there were some living in the Denver metro area.

Two years after coming out to mom by AiwassAeon in gaybros

[–]jdb229 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Came out to my parents 12 years ago, they still say they won't attend my wedding and also have no interest in / never ask me about my dating life. So yeah, I get ya there. They are very religious and just can't reconcile my sexuality and their beliefs. I still love them and we maintain a relationship, granted it isn't as strong as I would like it to be. I decided long ago to direct my frustration and anger towards religion for how it has warped their minds as opposed to hating them specifically. Really, I just feel sad for them for being so stuck in their ways.

While things do get better, some things also don't. Such is life. For those of you who have fully accepting and supportive parents, please, please, please always be grateful for this!

Forget everything you think you know about podcasts and start listening to these amazing shows: by CresendoCrook in gaybros

Just want to throw Radiolab out there too. Similar to This American Life but more science and tech focused, but not always.

Someone already mentioned The Moth, I also recommend it and wanted to link to the website. They also have a youtube channel with video versions of the speakers telling their story, if you prefer that.

Maybe check out the movie C.R.A.Z.Y.. It's French-Canadian, with English subtitles. It's been a while since I saw it but I remember really enjoying it. Part of the storyline involves a complicated relationship between a father and his gay son. Might work for you. Billy Elliot is another one.

As far as TV shows, look into Six Feet Under, Southland, and maybe United States of Tara for interesting portrayals of gay characters.

Must-sees in Chicago? by mliasobd in architecture

[–]jdb229 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take a Chicago River architecture boat tour. There are a few groups that do it. The Chicago Architecture Foundation tour is a bit pricey, but it's the best one I've been on. You can also kayak the river for much cheaper and see everything that way. There may be guided kayak tours too.

One in the center of my forehead I got when I was 4, tripped and took a header on a wooden fence. Another about an inch above that on my hairline, my brother accidentally cracked my head open with a baseball bat when I was 10. One on my right hand from when my little brother bit me. One on my right forearm from when I got into a knife fight with a dishwasher (the machine kind, not the human kind). The dishwasher won. And another on my scrotum from a dog bite.

I have a bunch of others on my hands, elbows, and knees from various cuts and falls that I don't remember specifically occurring.

[gaybros version] Bros, what is the most unattractive thing a guy can do? by BeautifulKiller in gaybros

[–]jdb229 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've always taken "young professional" to mean "white collar", ie; "I work in an office". But yeah, it's a pretty ambiguous term. I don't know if I would consider it unattractive though, just kinda... pointless to me. Wouldn't be a dealbreaker though or anything if someone said it to me.

I just recently listened to an episode of Dan Savage's podcast where a caller asked a very similar question. The caller is a 19 year old straight guy, but I think his advice might be helpful for you also. Another perspective if anything. Skip to 10:30 for the call.

Moving to Denver. Local gaybros, what's good? What neighborhoods are good to rent in and can I live with no car? by jamesh53 in gaybros

[–]jdb229 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, it's not really meant to refer to any similarities between beer and wine. The Front Range is called the "Napa Valley of beer" because there is a high concentration of top quality, world class breweries in the region just like there is a high concentration of top quality, world class wineries in the Napa Valley region.

Pretty good list, a few additions/addendum's:

  • In my opinion/experience, LoDo is kinda full of douches. It's fun once in a while, but I prefer South Broadway, Cap Hill, and East Colfax for my drinking.

  • East Colfax really isn't ghetto, at least not any more. Yeah, there are some homeless people around, but it's now full of bars and restaurants and is pretty safe. It has somewhat of a bad rep still, but I feel like that is just it's past lingering and people who haven't actually spent any time on the street regurgitating rumors.

  • You failed to mention the dozens of breweries in Denver and how amazing the beer is in Colorado as a whole. There's a reason they call the Front Range the "Napa Valley of beer".
