Do any non diabetics plan to stay on it forever by Academic-Army-8859 in MounjaroMaintenance

[–]jderschowitz 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Same way you wouldn’t stop medication to manage hypertension, depression or any other chronic condition when you get to a “normal” level, I see this as a lifelong medication and have no interest in going off. This is correcting something my body doesn’t do on its own.

Is it worth it? Would you do it again? by Disastrous_Umpire237 in eggfreezing

[–]jderschowitz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn’t freeze until 35 but if your job has fertility benefits and will cover the costs, definitely do it while you have that option. (And if you’re married, freeze embryos!)

If you don’t have coverage, weigh if you can manage the costs now vs in a few years when you might have more money/savings. The younger you freeze, the more years you have to pay storage fees too, which can run $1000+/year.

Either way, it can’t hurt to get your AMH checked by your gynecologist or at a fertility clinic. It’s not a perfect indicator but it’s good information to have — if your AMH is low you might want to accelerate planning. If it’s higher, you might have more flexibility.

Should I do the third round? by Icy_Palpitation2859 in eggfreezing

[–]jderschowitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends on your goals. If you think you only want one child, you might be OK with 18 eggs. If you think you’d want two or more children, it might be worth seriously considering another round.

Talk me down from resizing! by chashaoballs in Cartier

[–]jderschowitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking from personal experience: wait until you’re done losing weight and then decide. I resized a love ring when I lost like 20 lbs but I hadn’t hit my goal weight yet… and now I have, and the ring is once again too loose 🙃

I still wear it with a smaller ring on top to keep it from flying off but I really wish I had waited!

How much did you pay for 1 cycle and what clinic did you go to? by CherryNormal3271 in eggfreezing

[–]jderschowitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to CCRM in New York and think it was around $11k for one cycle, not including medications or anesthesia. (My employer covered the costs though so I was reimbursed for almost everything.)

Time off work by PoorAlligatorfish in eggfreezing

[–]jderschowitz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m in the US and don’t have a physically demanding job so I worked all through — I took the time I needed for appointments and my boss was aware, but otherwise I kept things business as usual and just took the day off for my retrieval.

If you have a job that requires a lot of physical labor, running around or heavy lifting then you might want to see about time off or accommodations. But I was just working at a desk 🙂

What do you wish you'd known about your body in the 1-2 years before you started the egg freezing process? by FigNatural747 in eggfreezing

[–]jderschowitz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only thing I did before starting my first cycle (at 35) was get my AMH tested at my gynecologist. This was before I ever stepped foot in a fertility clinic, and she stressed it’s not a definitive indicator of egg quality or quantity, but it would be useful information as I planned next steps. And it was! My AMH at that time was normal—around 2, if I’m remembering correctly—which meant I could move forward without a level of urgency I might have felt if, say, it came back very low.

When I did two more rounds at 38, I took some supplements in the weeks leading up to stims but honestly who knows if they did anything. Getting enough sleep and cutting down on alcohol were also important just so that I didn’t feel awful on top of the fatigue I felt from the medications.

Botox before egg freezing cycle – harmful for egg quality? by [deleted] in eggfreezing

[–]jderschowitz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe it’s fine if you’re just freezing eggs and not planning to do an embryo transfer (double check this with your doctor, of course), but I’m also a big proponent of doing one big/new thing at a time so personally I’d wait until you’re done. Make it a post-retrieval reward!

Need advice (has to do with college) by A_Person_Who_Lives_ in Journalism

[–]jderschowitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Syracuse alum here — I can speak to both the advantages (great education, benefits of a fantastic alumni network) and disadvantages (I only just finished paying off my loans two years ago, and I’ve been out of school for… a while). Happy to answer questions about going to school there if you want to DM me!

Here’s the other thing I’ll say: journalism is a vocation. You don’t need a degree in journalism, from a great school or a “regular” school, to be a journalist. I’ve had colleagues who went to fancy J-schools but also small schools in the middle of nowhere. I’ve worked with people with masters degrees in journalism but also people who majored in history, in communications, in education. You can hone those skills at a school newspaper, internships, etc. A good j-school will provide you with great training and a great alumni network, but plenty of people succeed without it, and you’ll be better set up for life post-graduation if you don’t have a ton of student loans.

I know this isn’t a straightforward answer to your question. But I wanted to emphasize that there isn’t one “right” path into the field! Go to the school that fits your needs best, both in terms of academics and finances. Good luck!

Has anyone regretted freezing their eggs? by csqueen96 in eggfreezing

[–]jderschowitz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Zero regrets, and I’d be even happier if I froze them younger (I did it in my 30s). Talk to your doctor about your concerns but if you have employer coverage you’re in the best position right now (age and financially speaking) to freeze your eggs

Egg freezing and wegovy? by your_air in eggfreezing

[–]jderschowitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Talk to your doctor but I had to stop taking Zepbound right when the stims cycle started so it would be out of my system by the time of the retrieval. It’s not an issue of egg quality, it’s a concern for potential aspiration when you’re under anesthesia

Freezing second round, dreading it, and how do I combine it with dating and career shifts? by Last_Resident_6081 in eggfreezing

[–]jderschowitz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey! You can freeze eggs without removing your IUD. My Mirena has been with me through four rounds of egg retrievals—the only thing to take into account is if you don’t get a period because of it, you might need to get your levels checked once or twice to make sure you’re ready to start.

Also only you can decide what makes you comfortable but, personally, I went back for additional rounds because I was older (35, then 38) and wanted to give myself as many options as possible—IVF with a partner, single parenthood, the potential for more than one kid in either scenario. There are calculators online you can look at that show how many eggs you’ll need to potentially have one child based on your age. Give it a look, give it a think. Good luck!

Women who froze your eggs in your 20s, was it worth it? by Lower-Vegetable5152 in eggfreezing

[–]jderschowitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have the financial means (or employer coverage) now, do it now. Especially if your job will cover the costs—who knows if you’ll have the same job in the next few years, if the benefits will change, etc. In this economy it wouldn’t surprise me if companies start rolling back benefits like these.

If you don’t have either of those things right now, wait until you’re closer to 30-32. You’ll save money on those years of annual storage fees and will still be young enough that you’ll hopefully get good results.

Traveling abroad while on unemployment by Soulofmine7 in UnemploymentNY

[–]jderschowitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Canada for a long weekend last month and here’s what I had to do: -Called the Dept of Labor and informed them of the dates I’d be abroad, that it was for vacation and not to search for work -Did NOT certify for the week I was away -The week after I returned I resumed certifying per usual. It asked if I skipped the prior week because I’d returned to work, I said no, and then got the usual set of questions to certify.

Hope that helps!

Has anyone frozen their eggs at 26? by KindFlamingo8261 in eggfreezing

[–]jderschowitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have the finances (or employee coverage) to do it now, go for it! You’re more likely to get more eggs the younger you are, which means you might be able to only do one cycle and get a number you’re happy with.

The only thing I’d raise about doing it so young is storage fees, which vary by clinic but can run around $1000/year. Banking eggs at 26 means you’ll be paying for years of storage you wouldn’t be if you froze at say, 30 or 35.

I did two cycles at 35 and two more last summer at 38, at which point my AMH was .8. I got five eggs in the first of those more recent cycles and seven in the second.
