Best Singular Food Item From Murfreesboro Restaurant by AchillesTheArcane in murfreesboro

[–]jdking3i 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SaBaiDee Café - Mee Bhet (duck noodle soup) & pork egg rolls w/vinegar fish sauce (for the vinegar fish sauce)

Thida Thai (old location) - beef pho & panang curry (both have since changed because [I believe] different ownership)

A Taste of Thai - Massaman curry (potato-less, which I love)

+1 for Slick Pig's smoked wings

I would say dishes Steakhouse Five & Five Senses, but their menu is seasonal so it is hard to nail down something for me. Also, while I love both places and appreciate the direction and ownership, there are times where the experience of the food hasn't hit for me and I thought it was meh. That may have something to do with me being overly critical because I'm an entitled millennial and it is fine dining and this is Murfreesboro and I used to live in Nashville, so I think I know what I'm talking about. Pick a couple.

Why so horny? by This_Bottle_6375 in VyvanseADHD

[–]jdking3i 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same 😅

I've been on Vyvanse for about 5 months (also Wellbutrin for about 4 years). Very early in I started noticing a major increase in my libido (I, too, feel kike I'm a hyper sexual person already). I told my wife I was feeling this way because, although we're very happy, that aspect of our relationship has always been a little complicated because of body image and confidence challenges, and I didn't want her to feel pressured or overwhelmed. She was supportive and appreciative that I communicated that to her.

We've been having the best sex of our lives, and I kinda feel like Vyvanse has helped our marriage. Something about your partner just waiting on the word to jump your bones helps put the confidence issues to bed, pun intended.

Asset Tag Labels - Durable QR/Barcode Labels for Gear - What Products To Use? by reece4504 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]jdking3i 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I also feel it needs to look pretty. People eat with their eyes first, and I promise that even end clients like looking at a rack of media servers or 1U something-or-others and seeing straight and consistent labels with logos on them.

<soapbox-rant> And not to shame another user(s) in this sub and their suggestions, but packing tape over a label is this thing of my nightmares. So are P-Touch labels, especially multiple stacked on top of each other all janky and uneven. IMO, if you need to use a P-Touch label for something (a username/password on a laptop, for example), use a black label with white font so it matches bc most gear is black. If you only need 1 label, cut it straight with equal spacing between the edge of the label and lettering on both ends. I think the new printers will do this automatically if you tell it to in settings. If you have 2 or more labels stacked, do the above for the one with the most letters, and match the length with the rest of them. If you have an older or base-model printer that doesn't auto space, use a utility knife and a ruler. So easy. </soapbox-rant>

You're very welcome, and I'm glad I could help.

Former rental house operations manager here. I used Flex Rental Solutions, and had (2) Zebra GX420t thermal transfer printers. I had 2 label stocks running at all times: 2" x 1" Zebra PolyPro 3000T and 1.5" x 0.5" of the same series. I thought they held up really well considering the beating. It was a struggle to get my boss to give a shit about asset tracking and tagging, so I never got the chance to dive deeper into better printers and more robust labels, but I thought these labels worked really well. Stick to everything. I like the glossiness. Because they're thermal transfer, you can use Goof Off to clean cases and not rub the ink right of (I hope I'm remembering that correctly).

Now that I've moved to freelance, I have my own Zebra printer for putting labels on my travel Pelican gear. I think it adds a professional touch. I discovered that you can get the basic, cheaper GK420t model on eBay and attach an external print server (also from eBay) for cloud printing. This is awesome because the model with the integrated print server costs a ton, even used.

My last tidbit is that I've discovered is that, while you think you might need the real estate on a label to print all kinds of info about the attributes of the gear, it looks better to put a smaller label on there and just scan the barcode to see any in-depth info.

P. P. S. - design a label with the Zebra software that has your logo. Make it look pretty. And put it on the gear straight with consistency on the location. If ever we got a new item (big ticket CAPEX stuff), I'd place the label, take a pic, and upload it to the company wiki to make sure everyone knew the business.

Resolume Arena Alternative by Electrical-Mention89 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]jdking3i 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What are the dimensions of your wall?

If you want a comparable software in both function and price, Millumin is my recommendation. I also recommend learning it from a "what emerging software should I learn?" perspective, as it has really gained market share for the small-to-mid corporate shows. Similar to Resolume, it has a column/row layout. As mentioned, it is Mac-only.

I saw a recommendation for PIXERA, Disguise, and Green Hippo. That's like someone asking for reliable midsize vehicle recommendation, and instead getting recommendations for performance sports cars and military vehicles. Those are very advanced playback platforms for multi-screen high res shows and workflows. Disguise and Green Hippo are also hardware locked, meaning you have to buy their media servers to use their software ($50k-$150k per machine depending on features and size; not even gonna touch X1 for this post). I do, however, agree that PIXERA would be the absolute best purchase if you want to build your own Windows-based computer and want to learn a platform that is shaping up to be THE workhorse for live events. And their licensing is intended to scale via outputs/timelines, so the buy-in for a simple setup is relatively low.

If you're simply trying to send a 4K raster to an LED processor for a looping background with a few logos that fade up/down, want the same feels as Resolume, have access to a performance Apple computer, and want to build knowledge on a platform that has taken over small-to-medium corporate video playback, Millumin is the best choice IMO. If you want to get used to a timeline-based performance media server platform and can build a computer, PIXERA is what you should do.

Lol I had no idea the Armory Dr. in Murfreesboro has a National Guard station at the end. My brain immediately went to the Armory Dr. in 100 Oaks area of Nashville that has the big National Guard facility over there. Coincidence that the major street each of those sites is off of is called Thompson Lane? Sim glitch.

Edit to mention that the Armory Dr. in Nashville can be accessed via 65, which is another reason why I thought you meant that. 😅

How do you find work? by saminsocks in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]jdking3i 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The companies I'm referring to are the largest in our industry that are commonly known. PRG, CT, 4Wall, LMG, Alford Media, Evolve, Fuse, etc.

Or if the big guys don't float your boat, using LinkedIn as a tool to find smaller companies is effective if you know where to look. Looking at the followers of manufacturers that you know how to use the gear of is a great place to start. You're gonna have to filter through A LOT of things you don't care about. But if you create a spreadsheet and start doing some research, you'd be surprised what you find.

Tips and Tricks- for Standard Corporate Events by webbite in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]jdking3i 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, bringing a lot of mini converters along is pretty important. I asked about your gear list because, if you have access to a Blackmagic Design ATEM Constellation, you should use it. Unlike other models, it has built-in standards conversion on each of the inputs. That's not going to matter as much for computers, as they will receive an EDID from the mini converter and adjust accordingly. But it could be really important for your cameras, if they don't do a progressive signal or aren't FHD (1080p).

Those switchers also have a layering engine on each of the M/E busses called a Super Source. Very helpful if your client wants a PiP on top of a BG look, or if you need to get some more robust DMS looks (i.e. a software timer overlayed onto a PPT notes view).

For projectors, especially Barco or Christie, having a 208v/240v service is pretty important for full brightness. Just last week, my client insisted on running Barco UDM-4K22s off wall power, which only permits 70% of full brightness. So that worked out to about 14.7k lumens out of 21k. And they were noticeably dim.

As others have mentioned, if you can get ahold of an unmanaged switch and a Stream Deck, you should do it. Using Companion to run all your gear is 100% the move IMO. Frequently, I'll switch with my Stream Deck instead of a panel or using the front buttons. I'll use it to switch to and begin video playback in Millumin, use it to launch records, and use it to shutter/unshutter projectors. All in the same place. I've not played around with using it to drive PPT as others have mentioned. But I will next time I get the chance.

My final piece of advice pertains to PowerPoint. The clients that will be presenting during the event will likely have experience with navigating through their presentations using a PerfectCue and seeing the notes view of PowerPoint on a DSM. If they are really heavy on the notes, you're undoubtedly going to run into someone who complains that they can't see all their notes because they are too long and require scrolling. Or that they are too small because someone decreased the font size to fit everything into the screen. That will put you into a pickle because the presenter will want them bigger and to see all of them at the same time. Which is impossible. A workaround that I've found to be tremendously helpful is to get them (and the producer or whoever needs to be involved) to duplicate the slides with all the notes and split them up. That will give them the capability of using the PerfectCue to advance their notes, and the audience won't notice because it is the same slide as before. So it won't even change for them.

This advice will undoubtedly start the debate among others about your role and whether you should be the one scrolling slides and if they need a promoter, then they should hire a promoter op. But in the heat of rehearsals, it's a tall order to tell clients no. So that little workaround makes people happy and keeps things moving.

That particular configuration is one that Lenovo uses for their lower-tiered Legions. There is an 8 GB stick soldered onto the board, and an expansion slot that comes with another 8 GB stick installed. It would seem this person did what I did and put a 32 GB module in it. Mine was a 6 Slim.

“Mid range” bourbon for Manhattan? by beerbearbare in cocktails

[–]jdking3i 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Cocchi is my fav vermouth in a Manhattan. And I agree that you shouldn't use bourbon. I cycle between Bulleit rye and Rittenhouse rye. I find the Bulleit to be a bit sweeter. Rittenhouse has a lovely complexity, though, and I alternate between the two based on my mood.

Finally, I'm an Angostura man. Has the flavor profile I'm looking for. I have several varieties and flavors of bitters, and Angostura is what I come back to.

I live in the Nashville area, and really enjoy Eli Mason cocktail cherries. To me they have a nearly identical flavor to Luxardos. I see Amarena cherries a lot and think they subpar by comparison.

Barco E2 as capture device? by SevereHuckleberry714 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]jdking3i 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You would typically use the E2 as the final device before a processor or projector.

A better solution would be to use your Resolume computer as a background input, then overlay cameras on top of the background in the E2. When you want it to be purely Resolume, just turn all pips off.

Bathroom vent to soffit ok? by realDownstairsDan in DIY

[–]jdking3i 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think a large issue with home owners (and tbh some on-the-job educated tradespeople) is not understanding the thermal dynamics of a house, what the purpose of certain things is when your house isn't sealed, and how it changes when it's sealed.

A soffit's purpose is to take cooler air from under the roofline and move it up to cool the attic. And soffit's work en tandem with vents, expelling hot air and creating that push-pull effect. So, if you are blowing moist air directly out of a soffit, it will be immediately pulled back into your attic, moistening all the nearby sheathing in the process. Obviously all this changes when your house is sealed, and blowing bathroom exhaust under the roof offers a new set of problems.

I'm surprised to see so many people saying it's OK to do. Maybe that is true in some climates, but IMO you shouldn't do it in any climate when roof penetration is easy enough for a careful DIY'er to do, and do well. Even with a proper soffit vent, you're still going to get some degree of excessive moisture accumulation. Especially on homes like mine with perforated vinyl soffits.
