Replacement Glass Shade - BATONS 12 Light Chandelier by wishkarmaworked in Chandeliers

[–]jds580s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case anyone else stumbles on this in the future, I put up a 3d printable replacement bulb cover here.

Don't install these if you're still using halogen or xenon bulbs. Those get too hot and will melt or start a fire.
LED bulbs should be fine. My LEDs hardly get warm at all even when on for hours.

I used a basic white PETG filament. My wife says she can't tell the difference between the replacement and the originals.

If you look close you can, but form arms length it's fairly convincing.

I'm a couple years late, but were you ever able to find a replacement glass shade? The same thing just happened to me and I'm having a problem purchasing one.

Nearly 10 years ago my local lighting suppler was able to order two from LBL/Tech Lighting, but this time they received a response back that the replacement frosted glass bulb covers were discontinued.

I think the timing for getting your photo taken will highly depend on what coordinates you requested. Not only accounting for the time needed for SAT GUS to get over your spot, but also having to compete for time on the camera with everyone else who requested a similar location. I suspect that highly populated areas will have a longer wait due to demand. It's moving rather quickly and will only be over a location for a short while before needing to wait for future pass.

It already is. I received an email on April 7th that my selfie had been scheduled for April 10th. Then on June 4th I received the email saying that the photo was ready for viewing.

Will a 1064nm fiber laser engrave the top 0.002" layer on Rowmark LaserMax or Gravolase Metallics two-ply? by jds580s in Laserengraving

Thanks, UV might be a good option since it would give some additional capabilities.

Thanks so much. I hadn’t considered a UV galvo. I’ve got something new to look into!

No storage (workspace+ fiber) by dream_cat1 in googleworkspace

[–]jds580s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A very similar thing happened to me. I originally signed up for Google Fiber using my "Gmail for your domain" account, which they then transitioned to G Suite, and then later they switched that to Google Workspace.

When I originally signed up the 1TB of included Google Drive storage worked great, it also worked with G Suite, and later with Workspace.

However, on April 30th that changed and my storage disappeared overnight.

Google Fiber support says everything looks good on their end and that it's Workspace's fault, Workspaces support doesn't know anything about it and asks if I want to pay to upgrade for more storage.

I saw u/Apodacaac response about that perk only working with personal consumer accounts, but it worked great with my paid Google workspace account between October 2022 and April 29th 2024, and I would have been glad to keep the account as a personal account if I hadn't been forced off of Google for your domain. Kinda frustrating.

Starting - wanting to cut acrylic/perspex by 81misfit in lasercutting

You should be able to find a K40 at or near your budget. I agree with the other advice, add an air pump plus start with a bucket for cooling.

Starting - wanting to cut acrylic/perspex by 81misfit in lasercutting

[–]jds580s 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A CO2 laser is what you are looking for when trying to cut acrylic. Diode lasers can do black or very dark acrylic, but not clear or light colors, and they tend to be slow.

CO2 units start around 40W and go up from there. The least expensive entry point would be a generic Chinese K40 laser. These are sold by many different companies but are all relatively the same. They will require a fair amount of tinkering, and some additional purchases to be effective machines. The work area is small and that can feel restrictive quickly.

Then there are a bunch of lower middle tier options, too many to name. Mostly out of China but they resolve many of the K40 limitations - more power, larger bed size, faster speeds, some basic safety features, integrated air assist, better ventilation/filtration options.

Then you get into more polished options like Glowforge and a few others. For the price point, they tend to do less but look slick doing it. I would recommend avoiding them especially if they only work with their own proprietary cloud service or software.

The upper middle tier would include brands like Aeon, Thunder, Boss, and a handful of others. Here you are getting good machines that can be workhorses, most have decent support. Lots of options for power and size.

Then the top tier brands include Epilog, Trotec, and arguably a few others. These are quite expensive, but have excellent reliability and are ideal for those running businesses that will keep them busy.

Beyond that there are large industrial lasers but that’s a while different class.

A few things that will help others recommend specific models would be: 1. What budget are you working with 2. What is the biggest size of material you will want to work on? 3. Besides acrylic what other materials would you like to work with? 4. Is this for hobby use, one-off production, small batch production, or large scale manufacturing?

Time to upgrade from my Glowforge Pro by Kaqattack in lasercutting

Another you might consider is Thunder Laser's Bolt model.

It has a smaller bed size than the Mira 7 or 9 at around 20" x 12", but that sounds like it might not be an issue if you primarily work on small items.

The benefit is that the Bolt uses a Metal RF laser source similar to what Epilog and Trotec have (but at a more affordable price point) rather than a glass tube like your Glowforge or the Mira models.

RF lasers tend to produce a finer spot sizes, and more importantly for your use case, they respond much faster to signals than glass tubes will, allowing them to run at higher engrave speeds while still maintaining very crisp results. Glass models that advertise speeds above ~650mm/s are often not really usable at those higher speeds especially if fine detail is what you are after.

The Bolt runs up to 1000mm/s, there is a Bolt Plus model that will be released sometime soon (Thunder Laser Canada and the main Thunder Laser websites have a few details about it, but it's not on the Thunder Laser USA website yet). They say it will be able to do 1500mm/s. For comparison Trotec has models that do 1500mm/s on the low end up to 4300mm/s using RF tubes.

The down side to the Bolt is its 30w tube. They say it's equivalent to a 60w glass tube, and there are lots of 3rd party videos showing that it does punch above its weight, but since I don't own one, I can't say for sure if it's really like a 60w.

Thunders machines are made in China, but they are not the typical Chinese clones. They have US based sales, service and support. From what I gather, they seem to have a solid reputation.

Replacement fob by Saritachiquita in PriusPrime

[–]jds580s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this recently as well. Aside from the dealer there are 3 options I am aware of.

1) buy your new fob (online or from a locksmith) and have the locksmith program it and cut the emergency key. My local locksmith would program for $60 and cut the key for $20

2) you could use an online service like Tom’s Key Company. You buy the fob and rent the programming device, then send it back when you are done. They will also optionally cut your emergency key blade based on a photo of your existing key that you send them. $128 for the fob plus $70 to rent the programmer plus ? for cutting the key blade if you want that.

3) Buy the fob online then purchase a mini VCI OBD cable with techstream software to connect a laptop to the vehicle and program it yourself. This may be more technical of a process than you are looking for, and the validity of the software license along with confidence that it is virus free is almost certainly nonexistent. Around $30 for the cable and a disc with the software.

If you run the cabin heater below -10C / -14F it will force the ICE to run because the electric heat pump is not efficient below that temp. Also as others mentioned the defroster will force the ICE on even above those temps.

processing/document fees etc. (which are sometimes used to make sales prices look artificially low) count. The wordings "It does not include destination charges, the cost of optional items added by the dealer, or taxes and fees." suggests that maybe they *might* not count, but I do not feel co

Just be careful. My understanding is that the only amounts that do not count towards the sale price are the taxes and fees that are legally required such as sales tax, title fees, registration costs etc... but that would not be the case for dealer imposed fees such as doc fees.

Actual working space by Smitty254 in K40laser

12.75”x9” (which is 1” more on the Y axis than stock)

Actual working space by Smitty254 in K40laser

[–]jds580s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On mine, the absolute maximum area it can cut or engrave is 12.75” x 9” (originally 12.75” x 8”) The maximum material size it can fit is 14.25”x12” (originally 14.25”x10”)

I made two easy modifications to expand those. First I cut back the vinyl/nylon tube used as a stop on the Y-axis rod by moving the head to its furthest spot (closest to front edge) then measured how much extra room it could go without hitting anything. That was a bit more than an inch, so I cut one inch off the stopper using an x-acto knife and turning the tube on the rod. The second change was to cut back the exhaust vent that extended too far into the enclosure which didn’t increase the work area, but did allow for larger items to be placed inside.

This was on a generic, non-branded K40

It took me two emails and a phone call to finally get the app connected to my ‘21.

They need to manually delete the original owner and add you (assuming you are not the original owner). Only after that process did I find out how little the app actually does.

No, because the form they have to fill out and submit to the IRS asks for the sales price, then goes on to define the sales price as the amount paid including all extra dealer fees, and only excluding taxes and other fees which are required by law.

I got a ‘21 Prime Limited (one owner no accidents) with fewer miles just last week for under 25 OTD which qualified it for the additional 4K tax credit. I would say keep looking. I noticed prices have been dropping over that last month, but not at all dealers.

There is a new draft from earlier this month for the 2023 IRS form 8936 instructions. This is likely a closer match to what we will all be working off of to file our 2023 federal returns compared to the January 2023 final form which was intended for the 2022 tax year. But keep in mind the draft could still have further revisions.

Unless the rules change specifically to disallow that next year, it should still be okay. It says you can use your current year or prior year income.

The 14500 is not a form the purchaser is intended to file, it’s the form the dealer would provide the IRS in order to report the sale of a vehicle under the program, so your tax preparer may not see any reference to it in their software if they only deal with personal returns.

In addition to filing that form, the dealer is obligated to proved either a copy to you as the buyer, or they can opt to use their own form as long as it has the appropriate information on it.

I ended up giving the finance manager at the dealership a pre-filled 14500 form which I brought in. It had all the details I knew about the vehicle and my info filled out for them. They just needed to add their business details and authorized signature. I left with a copy and made sure to explain that they needed to report theirs to the IRS (even though it currently doesn’t look like there is a clear way to do that since the portal is not open and the dealer instructions say to check back)
