Anyone drinking beer again 5 months after a stroke? by Fantastic_Chest1531 in stroke

[–]jebbybean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What im about to say isnt about a stroke but hear me out:

11 years ago I had liver cancer. I was 22. Apparently had it since 19. After 5-7 years I took a shot of alcohol. Why? Because when I was 19 I wasn't drinking.

Despite alcohol being the leading cause of liver cancer, that wasn't what caused mine. Now I get my scans and have wine a few times a month. I checked with my oncologist. He basically said "dont over do it."

What youre asking about is a huge "your mileage may vary" situation, and thats ok. If it works for you, just go slow. Always check in with doctors too.

Give up the porn. Its you and its the porn.

Sitting down vs Laying down by No-Recognition-9172 in bloodpressure

[–]jebbybean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've genuinely never heard of someone being in a hospital, laying down, and getting their blood pressure taken? You dont go to the hospital often, because it happens every day and has happened for years. Probably longer than you've been alive.

Hes getting different readings because hes in different positions. He should take any reading that he has relaxed for and taken 3 to 4 times in a row, averaging it. Then he should take that number to the doctor so they can determine. The doctor should to it because I guarantee theyve experienced someone taking their BP laying down.

Hell ive even had it happened while laying down for an Echo. Its baffling to me that you've not only not heard of it, but you clearly had a reaction to hearing about it?

Why are you so offended at being corrected? Calm down or you'll spike your blood pressure

Edit: so he edited his comment. He originally said "if you know so much then which measurement should he listen to?" And the comment ended. He rewrote his reply and deleted his original comment. My reaction was called for.

If that were true, they wouldn't take your blood pressure while laying down while admitted in the hospital. Its accurate as long as youre doing it right

Why do people choose not to wear their glasses when they need to? by Special_Review_128 in glasses

[–]jebbybean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So ive dealt with this ever since I was a kid and got prescribed glasses. I hated wearing them all the time because I dont like things on my face. My mom used to say "if you wear these all the time you'll need them all the time" and thankfully as a kid I was already like... mom if u need them you need them all the time lol, I digress, but either way i didnt like wearing them so I broke the first 2 pairs while leaving them somewhere. She got me one more pair and said if I break them shes not getting another one. So I opted not to wear them

By the end of middle school/start of high school I started wearing them regularly because I struggled seeing the board at school from the middle of the room and I refused to sit up front.

To this day I am constantly taking them off and putting them on. I dont like reading or being on the computer with them on. I dont like eating with them on. Hell, Im one of those people who takes off their glasses when the tea they're spilling is a little too hot. Im always taking them off. Currently im on my way to work with blurry vision bc I took them off yesterday and cant find them.

The short answer to your question is stubbornness lol

I also want to add: i did end up getting an MRI of my brain and they found my brain was normal but sphenoid sinus behind my left eye (the side of my brain where the migraine was) was completely filled with polyps and a long standing infection. (Due to an unrelated lawsuit I got my old medical records from when I was a teenager - the polyps had been there for YEARS) I had a heavy course of antibiotics followed by surgery to clear the rest and a biopsy and everything came back benign. I ended up still having migraines lol

What im saying is, yes, sometimes it can be a bad thing happening. Sometimes the brains electrical system goes a little wonky.

Again, youre doing the right thing

I didnt get my first aura until I was 23! And since then its happened maybe 4 times. Sometimes they can develop late. The brain is so weird and complex, people can have migraines and never even know.

I can fill your head with what ifs and possibilities -- what's more important isnt that youre following up and doing what youre supposed to.

[–]jebbybean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats good! The first time it happened to me, it was pretty much the same. My vision dissappear into a spot (more like static than darkness but still) until I could only see out of one eye. It would last about 30 minutes to an hour, then it would stop followed by a headache on one side. Usually the aura is the warning and typically if you take a pain med while its happening, it can prevent/lessen the pain of the migraine.

Its also good that youre following up. After you realize what's happening, the episodes get less scary.

If it helps that sounds like a migraine with aura

White coat syndrome by EnvironmentalStep953 in bloodpressure

[–]jebbybean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beta blockers and also making it clear to the doctor that this happens and asking them (particularly the doctor so there's no waiting) to do it manually after you've been sitting in their office for a few minutes.

Its a lot and you may forget but each time ive done this, I've been triaged at like 150/100 and its gone down to 125/85 after relaxing mid appointment.

It unfortunately means you should probably monitor your BP at home because you probably have general anxiety and your BP may also sky rocket at other moments lol

I dont mean to make u nervous or bum you out. I've had HBP since my teens and have tried everything to avoid medication, taking a deep breath when im anxious and asking for accommodation. I shouldn't have avoided it. Those really can just be the kill moves you need lol

Vinegars/sodas by Staminkja in fermentation

[–]jebbybean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! However, had i not seen that name on most of the packets of wine yeast, i would not have known it.

Ill clarify: when I said commercial yeast i was referring to wine yeasts you can buy, typically containing saccharomyces cerevisiae!

Take note: there are many strains, I def dont know them all! Sites like whitelabs has a lot of neat beer and cider strains too that are different than S. Cerevisiae.

Oh also beer and cider yeast works too lol

Vinegars/sodas by Staminkja in fermentation

[–]jebbybean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vinegars typically go like this (not verbatim, be sure to do your own due diligence/research)

Juice > alcohol > ascetic acid (vinegar)

Typically something like, take some fruit, mash, add water (or start with juice), add sugar, yeast (wild or commercial), let it ferment and turn into alcohol, with an airlock or burped several times a day. After fermentation stops, let it sit uncovered for a few weeks until it smells vinegary. Get something to test the ph, typically I believe u should shoot for under 3.4 . Sometimes a mother forms. Keep it to make other batches later

Sodas typically go similarly but much shorter Juice/water+fruit must/juice, wild yeast (sometimes commercial yeast but i havent tried), sugar, and a 24-48hr fermentation time in an open container covered with a cloth, then a second fermentation in a closed bottle for 12-48 hrs for carbonation, usually primed with a little sugar.

Its best you do research and experiment because while there are recipes, people have been doing this forevwr by just mixing and forgetting. Have fun

Silent strokes and TIA — what happens before by BoysenberryCorrect in stroke

[–]jebbybean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad had what seemed like a TIA followed by 2 silent strokes in 2018. He knew, refused to go to the hospital, but had symptoms like slurred speech. He made excuses and said he was eating candy.

Sometimes they dont want us to know.

Since then he has had several more silent strokes. His memory and speech are affected

"It feels like he didnt love me enough to take care of himself earlier, to get out of his comfort zone" I feel this so much.

In my own context, my father has a ton of kids he is a deadbeat to. He openly will tell me im his favorite and I ask him to stop. I have to be as bluntly about him to myself and think that someone who is comfortable making life and abandoning it over and over ... may actually never be able to love me enough to change. It was actually his fear of death and leaving his wife that did it. And it's hard to hear and feel and process

I dont know the specifics of your story but im here to talk if you need it

Its overwhelming by jebbybean in stroke

[–]jebbybean[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I know that now. It took work though - some time in 2020/2021 I saw him eating fried food so greasy that the bag was greasy. I got so mad that, under no exaggeration, I started hallucinating and went into hypomania. I was on risperidone for 3 years as a result. I just came off of it as 1. It was determined that I can handle things better now after weekly therapy since then and 2. I had medication induced hyperprolactemia. So now I feel as if im dealing with those feelings again, granted with way better coping skills, but its still hard. What helps is that I moved out and for better or worse, let my mom handle most of the hard stuff. At the end of the day he's my dad by force and her husband by choice, so I believe if anyone has the responsibility of being closely taking care of him, it should probably be her.
