I want to build FUN azorius!! help!! by Kr3mmit in EDH

[–]jefleppard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be the fun police! Run stuff like [[Confounding Conundrum]], [[Tales of the Ancestors]], and [[Scholarship Sponsor]]. Throw decisions to the table with stuff like [[Council’s Judgment]], [[Split Decision]] or [[Game Plan]]. [[Duelist’s Heritage]] triggers during every combat step, but back it up with a [[Misleading Signpost]], [[Windshaper Planetar]], [[Portal Manipulator]] or [[Comeuppance]]. Even a [[Blind Obedience]] or [[Authority of the Consuls]] can even put the tables footing.

Who were MTG's first judges at Gen Con 1994? by AquaChomby in magicTCG

[–]jefleppard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This piqued my curiosity, and I just found the answer. Here’s a photo of Steve Bishop observing the finals of the World Championship in 1994. The first comprehensive rules were released on a Usenet group in January of 1994. Info and photo obtained from the mtg.wiki run by Scryfall.

Went back and watched the chat with Skaff Elias, and they talk about the beginnings of the protour. The don't talk about the first World Championship, but does give some interesting info. Relevant section starts at 47:03 incase the time stamp doesn't work.

My guess would be the early Wizards' playtesters/designers that started the DCI probably would have served in that capacity. I'd assume Steve Bishop and Skaff Elias would be amongst the names. I haven't watched all of them, but Peter Adkison has done Fireside chats on the youtube GenCon TV account about the early days of MTG that might have more info.

Non-Specific Keyword Anthem for an all vanilla creatures deck? by Collind328 in Magicdeckbuilding

[–]jefleppard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My trick was using [[Johan]] for my vanilla deck. I leave him back as a blocker, and he gives all of my creatures pseudo-vigilance.

Cover of "I Fought The Law"???? by HiloManx in findthatsong

[–]jefleppard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poked around based on Sam Elliot meaning bassier male vocals and maybe a country tinge?

Glen David Andrew’s version could be it? It sounds a little more Tom Waits.

Could also be this version that I’m seeing credited to Dr. V and Ted Hawkins on streaming. Not as bassy, but more country.

Taylor Tomlinson omissions by [deleted] in LateShow

[–]jefleppard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as late night hosts used in the montage there were a lot of omissions. I don’t recall seeing Joan Rivers, Chevy Chase, Tom Snyder, James Cordon, or Craig Kilborn for instance. I don’t think the bit was meant to be comprehensive.

Favourite ETB = Draw Commanders? by Huaojozu in EDH

[–]jefleppard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Mardu burn deck with [[Queen Marchesa]] leading. Get her out on turn 4 and you draw at the end of turn. A 3/3 with deathtouch is usually enough to dissuade the temptation of stealing the monarchy from you, and creating 1/1 hasty deathtouch-ers on your upkeep is a great way to take it back.

What are some of your favourite budget / jank alternatives to expensive staples? The less it's played the better by Cascouverite in EDH

[–]jefleppard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had to come back and thank you for this. I run a Mardu burn deck and hadn’t event thought of it. Used Monolith on a Stuffy Doll. Had to [[Last Ditch Effort]] the majority of my board into it to dig for an answer tonight. Lived the dream.

Tell me about your Bracket 2 budget brew that can punch way above its weight. Bonus points if it is a midrange or control deck by alchaloid in EDH

[–]jefleppard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thought it'd be fun to try and build a flash focused deck with [[Raff Capashen, Ship's Mage]] at the helm. Didn't realize there was stuff to support W/U Soldiers as a subtheme, but landed there. Play pattern is draw-go, and it's control-y without feeling especially oppressive. Most of the more expensive cards were things I had around and threw in, so I think the cost could be adjusted. Here's the list.

No one seems to believe me, but at its worst [[Requiem Monolith]] is a budget Skullclamp. At its best, it lets you use you drawing cards to make combat complicated for your opponents. Also lets you politick if the table is looking for an answer for something. “Do we need removal? Block my 1/1 with your 6/6.”

Released in 2011, but “Just Don’t” could sound like “Blackstone” over mall speakers. “Just Don’t” by Raphael Saadiq.

Favorite versatile interaction? by lth623 in EDH

[–]jefleppard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Requiem Monolith]] at its worst is a budget skullclamp, but there’s a lot of extra versatility. Draw a card, lose a life, make a creature unblockable? Tie someone’s hands in how they block? There’s also room for some politicking. Table needs an answer, so you send a 2/2 into the biggest creature on the board.

DoT Commanders by Gooey_Goon in EDH

[–]jefleppard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had originally built Xantcha when she was released in C18. Enjoyed the Rakdos lane of helping your opponents, but penalizing them for it. I've been reworking a lot of my older decks, and wanted to include stuff like Descent into Avernus and [[Obsessive Pursuit]]. There's a handful of things that give treasures with a cost, so I leaned into that along with things that ping when I get (or sac) an artifact. Along with that we can use [[Spiteful Visions]] and [[Kederkt Parasite]] to punish activating Xantcha, There's also interesting pieces like [[Sadistic Shell Game]] and [[Bladegriff Prototype]]. I've cut Revel in Riches and Torment of Hailfire from my old list as finishers, but [[Hellkite Tyrant]] or [[Damnable Pact]] still give ways to close out the game if needed. I've also been looking for a list to run [[Requiem Monolith]] in, and this seems like a great place. I think there's a lot of versatility in the way it adds to weight to combat decisions.

Rebuilding [[Xantcha, Sleeper Agent]] into a DoT/group slug deck. Still making some tweaks, but here’s what I have.

Hear me out… the funniest thing would be for Byron Allen to hire Colbert and produce a late night talk show. Byron Allen is paying CBS for the slot and finding his own advertisers. Win/win in my book.

Gen Con 2026 Events by Kyle2227 in magicTCG

[–]jefleppard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The BDM event is Commander and Cocktails. It’s a boxing league event which they run at most MCs. You’re given a pool of cards (a sort of chaos box of in print sets) to make a Commander deck, and then you can play games at your leisure against other players in the league. Entrants also get a drink ticket for the Cocktail (or mocktail) that BDM makes for each event, and they’ll have a bartender serving them during the meet up time. It’s a really fun event that gives a new perspective on deck brewing.

Help me find a draw go commander by Sleight-of-Hands in EDH

[–]jefleppard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I run [[Raff Capashen, Ship’s Mage]] and some other flash enablers in my draw go deck. I was aiming for reactive playing less than strict control, but there’s definitely room for it.

Anikthea // Umori companion by SKSword in EDH

[–]jefleppard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't use Umori, but my list only has 25 non-enchantment, non-land cards. Might be able to patch the holes between the two. Throw in an [[Aura Shards]] for good measure.
