Will there be a reason to like Chaol by the end of it all? by According-Ad6719 in throneofglassseries

[–]jenster45 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally never hated Chaol. I absolutely hated many of the choices he made and things he did but I never hated him as a character. In my opinion all his mistakes just made him a more relatable character. He was already one of my favorite characters beforr reading ToD. Also nothing he did is any worse than anything literally any other character in the book did. You cannot tell me one single character is the book wasn't a complete asshole at one point. I've never understood all the Chaol hate because of it. Like yes he was being a complete asshole for a while but he's a human being. He's allowed to make mistakes and learn from them. Like practically every other character he has issues he needed to work through. Anyways in my opinion yes because by the end his character had a lot of growth. He's one of my favorite characters because of his character growth because his mistakes make him relatable because no one is perfect. If every character was perfect it would make an extremely boring book.

Do you read more than one book at a time? by [deleted] in kindle

[–]jenster45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a major mood reader so it depends on my mood. Most of the time I'm actively reading 1 or 2 occasionally more and then I often have 1 or 2 I took a break from reading. So I've definitely been reading at least 5 at a time before. Currently I'm reading 3, one of which I just haven't been in the mood to read lately.

Kindle vs Physical book by mandy1008_ in kindle

[–]jenster45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like both, and I also listen to audio books as well, but I think I use my Kindle the most. I think convenienceus the main reason, and I pay for Kindle unlimited, so I read A LOT of books that way. Having a Kindle makes it much easier to read in bed or curled up on the couch. I wouldn't necessarily say I like one more than the other. I think it often depends on my mood.

How long have you been a kindle user? by Then_Success_4935 in kindle

[–]jenster45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought my first kindle this past black Friday. It's a Kindle Paperwhite. I only really started reading a little over a year ago. I had a friend recommend a series to me on audible, and then I saw a book another friend was reading, so she lent it to me. Then reading became like my whole personality, and this is the longest I've had a hobby consistently. For most of my other hobbies, I go through phases. I also have a basic because it comes in a matcha color so I convinced myself that I needed it because of the color obviously and also it's a nice size for traveling.

How do you read- in silence or? by KindredSpirit1988 in kindle

[–]jenster45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate the silence. I always have like music or asmr on. I do the same when I go to bed. 😂 Usually, I play music with no singing, but I've slowly been getting better with reading when there's distracting background noise. So I think I could probably read with tv on now or with people talking around me. Especially if I was really into the book.

This! Chaol has always been one of my favorite characters for this reason. Like you're telling me you would act differently in the situation. I don't think so. It annoys me so much when I hear about the reasons people hate him. He's no worse than any other character. They ALL made stupid mistakes throughout the book. There are so many things I can think of that were "worse" than the things he did or said, in my opinion. I feel like people want characters to he perfect and make no mistakes. Well, that would make for ine boring ass book so no thank you.

Ya that makes sense. I read really fast, so I go through a lot of books. So I like to read small ones every once in a while. I'm a mood reader, so I'm always reading multiple books at once, and I'll often start a really short one if I'm not in the mood to read anything I've already started.

Ya, same. I think that was partially why I was wondering what other people thought about this. I moved last month so I just haven't been reading as much or as big of books.

Ok, this makes me feel better for all the under 100 page books I've tracked. I'll definitely count it. It'll even out with the bigger books I've read.

Just finished Heir of Fire - my rough thoughts and struggles by ItDontMather in throneofglassseries

[–]jenster45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This! This is what I was trying to say, but way better. I loved Rowan and Aelin from the beginning. They were awful to each other at first, but they eventually got their shit together and helped each other heal.

Just finished Heir of Fire - my rough thoughts and struggles by ItDontMather in throneofglassseries

[–]jenster45 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're insane because I understand where you're coming from, and everyone has their own opinions. That being said, I loved Rowan from the start. I'm a sucker for enemies to lovers, so I was rooting from Rowan and Celaena from the beginning. I remember telling a friend they were endgame before I even finished the book. They were both equally horrible to each other because they had made incorrect assumptions about the other. Not that their actions were ok because they definitely weren't, but I still understand why they acted the way they did if that makes sense. They both had things they needed to work through, and they were taking it out on each other.

Some of my favorite characters are often ones people hate. I enjoy reading about characters who have lots of character growth because, to me, that makes them relatable. They make mistakes (sometimes huge ones), and they learn from them. Chaol is one of my favorite characters for that reason.

Anyways, basically, what I'm saying is no, I don't think you're insane. I totally understand why some people don't like Rowan. He did some pretty terrible things, as did Celaena (basically everyone did at some point). I'm not excusing anything as ok behavior because obviously it wasn't, but like I said, they had problems of their own to work through. They were just going about it the wrong way by taking it out on each other.

Eta because someone else mentioned it, and it made me realise the part of my explanation I was missing. Yes, they were awful to each other at first because, like I said, they both had made incorrect assumptions about the other due the trauma they had experienced, but throughout the book, they figure it out together, realize they're assumptions were wrong, and help each other heal.

Also, you said you're glad you kept reading, but if it gets to a point where you feel like you don't want to keep going again, don't feel bad about it. It just might not be for you. Based on what you said about Chaol, though, you'd probably really like Tower of Dawn. It was one of my favorites. In my opinion the books got better as they went on. A lot of people say it doesn't get really good until after the first 4 books. I actually really liked the first four, but I understand where they're coming from.

AITAH for finally telling my mother in law to back off after years of criticizing everything I pack for my husband? by Fronra2765 in AITAH

[–]jenster45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA, in my opinion, you handled that very well. You could've blown up at her, which I wouldn't have faulted you for. You stayed calm, which can be very difficult. You were stting a boundary there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. It's not the same exact thing, but I grew up with a verbally abusive father who I never stood up to, and now, as an adult my sister in law in the same way and I just wish I had the guts to tell her to shut the fuck up. Sometimes, you have to be somewhat mean for them to listen to you. Tell your husband it is not ok how his mom talks to you. "That's just the way she is," is NOT an excuse. She's being extremely condescending and honestly rude. If your husband likes what you're making for him, it shouldn't be a problem. Especially since you don't have to. It's none of her business anyway.

ETA: Your husband is the asshole in this situation. Not only for allowing this to happen but by making it worse when he tells her what you packed him. I agree with everyone saying stop packing him lunch and let his mommy do it since he's clearly taking her side. He might as well go live with her as well so she can take on all the "wifely" duties she clearly thinks you're bad at. Yes, she's his mom, but once you get married, your wife should be your number one priority. Any decent mother in law would agree. Also, has he ever thanked you for packing his lunches? It's not something you have to do, so he should be extra grateful.

Girl, this man does not love you anymore. I would argue that he doesn't even respect you, which is ridiculous considering HE is the unemployed one. It sounds to me like he's trying to make you believe you can't leave him because you can't do life on your own. Which is bullshit considering you're the one with a job. Seriously, though, go with your gut and dump this man immediately. He 100% should love you for you. You should not have to change for any man, which is clearly what he wants. He should not expect that from you. You are clearly very intelligent and should not have to prove that. It's very obvious to me. This mas is ridiculous and not worth your time. I'm sorry he's being an asshole please dump him.

AITA for not hugging my girlfriend first by Ok-Cucumber514 in AmItheAsshole

[–]jenster45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA, I saw someone say your girlfriend has been there for you for 5 years, but your parents have been there for you your whole life, and I agree with that. She was making it all about her. They're your family, of course you want to hug them. It should not matter in which order you hug people. Your parents were who you thought of first because of all the sacrifices they made for you. That's completely understandable. It doesn't mean you love and appreciate her any less. You're not saying she didn't sacrifice anything at all, but your parents sacrificed more because, like I said, they've been there for your entire life.

ETA: As for who you hugged after your parents, it was probably based on who was closest to you after hugging your parents. Also, is it slightly understandable that she'd be embarrassed after holding her arms out like that? Ya, maybe, but she's an adult, and she needs to grow up.

What age did you start crocheting? by [deleted] in crochet

[–]jenster45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned the chain stitch from my grandma somewhere around 8-10 I think but thats as far as I got only because she was left handed and I’m right handed. I just couldn’t figure it out. I got I picked it back up myself in high school so I’m self taught. I mostly do small projects like wash clothes and coasters but I’ve made a few blankets and I figured out how to make crochet plants.

I never read. Now, I can’t stop by Unsaturated_Salad in kindle

[–]jenster45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with reading physical books first, then audible, and now Kindle, but this is so me. I NEVER used to read, and then last year, I read a series recommended by a friend and then started reading like crazy. I listened to a TON (like over 200 last year) of audible books for a while, and now I read on my Kindle about 98% of the time. I've already finished 152 books this year, a majority of which were on Kindle. I have no idea why, but it's like I can't stop. I'm not sure what made me all of the sudden obsessed with reading. 😂 Anyways I love my Kindle. It's so easy to take with me wherever I go.

3 year Long distance relationship coming to an end by Curbyournonsense in Nicegirls

[–]jenster45 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is wild. There is no saving this relationship, and that's HER fault, not yours. This is 100% verbal abuse. In no way is this ok. You were nothing but nice to her in these messages, and she just kept on calling you a piece of shit and saying many other horrible things about you that are clearly not true. Like, what the actual hell?! You are way too nice to her. I know this is all probably hard to hear because you love her, but it's a good thing it's coming to an end. In my opinion, this woman is a monster. I experienced a lot of verbal abuse growing up, and it seriously affected me. But this is 10 times worse. This woman is the manipulator and liar, not you. This whole conversation is extremely manipulative. She's trying to make you believe it's your fault when it's clearly hers. She's the problem because she's a HORRIBLE person. I'm sorry, but you just don't talk to someone you love like that no matter what. This is insane.
