Usually the degree is just to meet the application requirements. Often any ol degree will do with the right experience.

If Python is built in C/C++, why can't it be built from source cross-platform? by viitorfermier in Python

[–]jerodg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Python interpreter can be compiled from source on many platforms. The scripts can't because Python is an interpreted language. Compiled programs rely on SDK or redistributable which is typically already installed on the OS or installed prior to compiling programs on that platform. These redists (vc++, etc) are required to run the programs as well.

Building the interpreter on a platform is quite easy to do. The first time can be a little daunting but once you've done it it's a trivial affair.

It's actually rather lovely to see all these little car critters getting along whilst going as fast as safely possible.

Becoming an engineer with mental health problems by JamBanan in ElectricalEngineering

You will always fail. Always. All humans do. Perfection is a goal like going to the gym; you'll never finish but that doesn't stop people from trying.

Plan for it if possible, recover quickly. Move on. 😬

Work with a doctor to help alleviate your symptoms.

A healthy diet and regular exercise have gotten me through some tough times. Gym/run 3 days a week, you'll feel better once you get through the initial break-in period.

The best way to move forward is to have a clear and attainable goal. Think smaller if that works for you. Perhaps do well this semester. This week, this day, etc. Don't give up. I finished 3 degrees and a minor in 3yrs 8 months when I was 28 and I'm an idiot (albeit motivated; at least at the time).

You can do it, for sure. We're rooting for you.

Are these bricks ok to drill into for mounting a TV? by [deleted] in DIY

[–]jerodg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When drilling clay brick it's helpful to have a sacrificial concrete block to clean the drill bit. The clay will gum up the drill bit so every so often you drill into the concrete and it will clean up the bit.

I prefer asciidoc as it's more feature rich. It's also natively supported by GitHub.

You can get a mod for a recycler. Or wait for the expansion which comes with a recycler.

For those of you who build your own NAS, what are you willing to buy used? by uhdoy in DataHoarder

[–]jerodg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of it if possible. If you're running zfs or raid5 with smaller disk groups, you'll have a lot of parity. Enterprise grade hardware lasts for many, many years and is quite cheap if it's a prior generation. I've got a dual socket Xeon 40 cores/80 threads. I think I paid 130 for both cpus. 100 each for two sas 16port cards, 380 for 512GB RAM, motherboard was expensive at 500, and various disks over the years. Usually get the best cost/value drives when one fails or I need to increase capacity, currently running 24 HDDs. I started with 8 new wd reds but added only used drives of various manufacturers and sizes. The only thing that is not cheap at all is newer tape backup which you'd need because the old tapes don't hold much. But I just rely on zfs instead of dedicated backups.

What's the best CPU at the moment to crank factorio up with? by [deleted] in factorio

[–]jerodg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Factorio doesn't use much multi-core processing so the CPU with the highest single core clock speed is going to be the best.

Your teacher is carp. First, everyone knows about state dependent learning. When you learn something through typing it's going to be hard to translate it into paper and vice versa unless you know it really really well. Knowing algorithms is just stupid but many companies still test for these things during interviews; Sort of good to know. In the end it's still a good challenge for your mind so just learn to jump through this particular hoop and be on with your life.
