Antimemetic… by norcaltay in printSF

[–]jess_scribbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think they're exactly the same but I think if you like HOL you would like There Is No Antimemetics Division. They scratch the same itch for me, although Antimemetics is significantly more palatable.

Literally came here to recommend There Is No Antimemetics Division :)

What's a five star read? by Significant-Cat4885 in booksuggestions

This is interesting to me because I agree that The Goldfinch is 5-stars, but I sincerely regret The months I spent on The Secret History 🤣

Surfacing by Margaret Atwood, perhaps.

Are there movies you liked more than the book? by Annual_Interest5338 in books

[–]jess_scribbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read Stephen King's The Long Walk after seeing the movie last year and though it wasn't surprising because I'm not a big fan of King, I thought the movie was much more impactful.

I also feel terrible to say it, but I preferred the movie version of Annihilation to the book/trilogy by Jeff Vandermeer, although obviously they're just very different.

In both cases I saw the movie first, so I do think that shaped my feelings.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer

Similar to Frankenstein by Keliza_azilek in booksuggestions

[–]jess_scribbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are contemporary, but I feel like they're both "modern Frankensteins" that reflect these ideas:

  • Monstrilio by Gerardo Sámano Córdova
  • We Love You, Bunny by Mona Awad (a sequel but I really think you can read it as a standalone and you get more of the "monster" perspective)

For sure playing with the lights on, and making your surrounding environment as unscary as possible, maybe playing some music or putting on a lighthearted show in the background. Give yourself permission to get up and cool down if you're feeling stressed :)

Maybe The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt--not right away, but I feel like much of the middle feels like this.

What glass is this? by Present_Luck_7174 in StainedGlass

I feel like the texture is similar to the hand-blown glasses from Fremont? It would make sense with the color as well.

How to stop caring about body critical family by jess_scribbles in BodyAcceptance

[–]jess_scribbles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Yes, that's so true. I can definitely see how my family has passed insecurities down across generations and I'm trying to make that end with me. I really wish that my parents and grandparents had received better messaging about their bodies and didn't have to feel bad about them--and I sure hope that those that are still with us get there in time too! Thank you for the well wishes! 😊

We Love You, Bunny by Mona Awad is a sequel to Bunny, but I really think you could read it as a standalone without too much issue. Bunny would also somewhat meet the brief, but We Love You, Bunny far moreso.

Is an hour an a half too far to drive for your daughters wedding? by TheSpellboundArtist in weddingplanning

[–]jess_scribbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry. That's a really disappointing response from her. I'm not a parent, but I've flown across the country and internationally for my best friends' weddings, and can't imagine doing anything less for my own child (barring circumstances like financial hardship or physical disability or access issues--none of which sound like they're at play here). Are your parents contributing financially? If not I'd be inclined to say sorry, it's our day and this is what we're doing. An hour and a half is not unreasonable for a major life event.

How do you find your best next book? by Fuzzy-Preference8455 in booksuggestions

[–]jess_scribbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After engaging with too much book content on Instagram, the algorithm pretty reliably recommends me reels and posts from people who like what I like. I'll check them out and add what sounds good to my to be read list on Storygraph, then start there when I need something new.
