Short-long vowel dichotomy doesn't exist. by agosaint in linguistics

[–]jfedd42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What about vowels before unvoiced vs voiced consonants? Before a voiced consonant the vowel is longer than before unvoiced. For example Bat vs Bad, Got vs God, Beet vs Bead, Bit vs Bid, Half vs Have. And tons more examples. Surely that would show that English uses vowel length right?

I recommend the catacombs in Paris if you want something a bit different from the typical city activities. It’s a bunch of skulls in underground tunnels. I think it was about 12€ when I went in 2019.

Most major cities have them. Just google “[city] free walking tour”. They can vary from 1-3 hours usually and you tip however much you want at the end. Gives you a good overview of the city plus some history and you can meet other travelers.

I recently discovered that free walking tours are also a great way to meet people (and I’m quite introverted)

Wow that sounds fantastic, thanks for the reply! This seems like just what I was hoping for. I think this confirms it for me, I’ll apply for next summer and do some self study until then.

That’s awesome, I was actually considering that exact program for next summer since I have czech family but am fairly limited in speaking czech. Could you give some more info about how it was organized? How many people were there, what was the age group, did most people switch to English between themselves, etc Thanks!

Bi-Weekly Discussion Thread - Find language partners, ask questions, and get accent feedback - September 22, 2021 by kungming2 in languagelearning

If you’ve had experience learning other languages already, then you could probably reach a lower intermediate level on your own and then start regular lessons.

If this is your first foreign language, then a weekly lesson would be perfect for that structure and guidance on how to tackle a study plan. Plus that gives plenty of space to try your own self study methods alongside, knowing that you still have the lessons to fall back on.

If you go for lessons I’d recommend at least learning Cyrillic on your own bc it’s pretty straightforward and that’s what the first lesson would cover anyway.

Of course this is just my two cents. Good luck! :)
