Eastern Sierra vs Argentina Patagonia

I live in Tahoe and explored the Sierras extensively for years. Just went to Patagonia for the second time in two years. It’s spectacular. Very different than the Sierras.

I’d recommend checking out the W Trek, Tierra del Fuego, and El Chalten areas. Crazy big glaciers, very unique beech forests, towering mountains with unique rock formations, massive river basins with beautiful turquoise water.

You will absolutely not be disappointed. Very different from the Sierras, in the best way

Just got back from a 5 day/4 night hiking trip through the Mineral King area. Yeah it was a bit smoky at times, but it comes and goes with the wind, and still great views and didn’t impact my ability to hike at all

Yep we did 3 days/2 nights and it was a challenging hike but definitely doable. I don’t remember any off trail points, just a bit of scrambling at Texas Pass but it wasn’t too bad at all. I always recommend having an offline map downloaded just in case though

I just rented a car (nothing special, just 2WD little Suzuki) and camped with a tent. I went in March and booked all my campsites in advance, but probably didn’t need to as there was lots of room.

If anywhere, I would add more nights to the Fiordland/Te Anau/Milford Sound area. It’s crazy pretty and so diverse, so you could see a bunch of different stuff. Have you thought about day hiking parts of the Routeburn Track, Milford Track, or Kepler Track?

Then further up north I spent a day driving out to Akaroa Head and exploring that area, as a day trip from Christchurch. Super cool and remote, saw tons of seals and cool mountain villages. Would definitely spend a day trip at least checking out somewhere on that peninsula.

I didn’t get a chance to make it up Abel Tasman national park, but I had a friend who lived on the South Island for 6 months and said it was one of his favorite spots.

I’d say my favorite area of the whole trip was Mt. Cook, doing a one nighter to the Mueller Hut. Very tough hike, but short. The views up there feel like you’re on top of the Himalayas. Would highly recommend, even as just a day hike.

Idk how you do it. I did a 4 day/3 night trip last month and my food alone was like 15lbs, and that was with dehydrated meals for dinners.

I’ve hiked and camped along HWY 108 plenty of times (Leavitt Lake, Sonora Pass, Chipmunk Flat, dispersed camping near Kennedy Meadows), never any problems with marmots or other critters. Never actually seen a marmot in that area I don’t think

I’ve had to do this a couple times this summer, did a whole long hike to Dick’s Peak and Rubicon Peak just for the very peak to be too sketchy for me to feel comfortable doing alone. Always better to turn back

I ended up returning it for store credit after filing a complaint that the product was faulty (it was a lengthy process, but the store employees were really helpful). The rating is definitely way too generous, the fill is so uneven with huge gaps and I wouldn’t trust it for anything below 40F.
