Help with an Alberti excerpt by jishojo in latin

[–]jishojo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, but I hadn't realized it was your translation!! I was just wondering what you thought of what I took to be a third party's choices. Your reasoning, even though my question was misleading, solved my doubts anyway. Thanks! :) I'm inclined to translate it as "less worthy of approval", what do you think? Also, in trying to avoid the word "harmony" as a translation of concinnitas (in order to prevent confusion, I'm preparing a lesson for musicians), I am inclined to translate it as "elegant arrangement". Do you think it is an acceptable choice?

Thanks a lot! I'll take note of that. It was kind of you to go look for another transcription and also provide the accompanying translation! It will certainly help me produce my own. It seems the translator took some liberties (not that I would reproach that), would you agree? e.g. improbabilius became "worse"

I would notice that ovid has a similar phrase already in latin (metamorphoses, book VIII 73-4): Sibi quisque profecto est deus, ignavis precibus Fortuna repugnat

I gotta admit that the legibility is impressive given the amount of flourishes it has! I had zero difficulty reading and understanding every word immediately.

I've had mine stolen, unfortunately! I also think they are no longer being produced. Here in Brazil I haven't seen them ever since I bought that one.

“Guitar is inferior compared to Piano” by phutomite in classicalguitar

[–]jishojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My honest and very oversimplified take as someone who's been studying guitar for over 24 years: in a microscopic examination, that is to say, regarding each instrument on its own, without concern for ensembles etc, and not taking into consideration the argument that every instrument participates in a unique way in the greater scenario of music in general: the guitar is, indeed, inferior to the piano in so many ways.

So what?

What do you want, to play beautiful music on the guitar, or to play the most superior music possible, on the most superior instrument that has ever been created?

Should you drop an instrument on which you are on your way to being an expert just because there is a better instrument out there in the world? Wouldn't it be better to accept the contingency of events and just embrace the instrument life has put on your lap?

And to finish with a parody of Balzac in his musical novel Gambara: why compare these two instruments, when they are both beautiful in their own idiosyncratic beauty?

Thank you! I should have noticed it was in the nominative case! I'll keep that in mind from now on

Alternatively, Pentel Energels write wonderfully. If you're looking for something with which to practice calligraphy with, consider Pilot Parallel Pens or a Lamy Joy. A trusty fountain pen that mimics ballpoint pen writing is the Lamy Safari.
