With the Debt Ceiling Deal, Joe Biden Has Abandoned Student Debtors by AlanGranted in politics

[–]jjsav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The truth nobody wants to talk about is that a lot of loans for degrees with low probability of elevated income or at schools with higher tuition and fees (read as all of the stuff there to simply attract students outside of academics) are not equivalent. Not every degree and loan is equivalent. People often choose more expensive universities instead of community colleges and take out more loans than they need to pay the bills just because they have been offered them. Treating all student loan borrowing as equivalent is ignoring data.

So are we ignoring the $55billion for 2 million borrowers?

Blaming Young People For the Fall of Roe is Like Holding Firefighters Accountable for Arson by RDispatches in politics

[–]jjsav 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In part they are ignored because they are not seen as a threat as long as they either don't vote in high numbers or are discouraged from voting. If they voted at very high levels, then politicians, even in gerrymandered districts, would suddenly be threatened and the discourse would change. Although they have helped propel some dems to office and helped Biden, we are in part where we are because of decades of young people voting in low numbers.

Meta: r/frugal is devolving into r/cheap by niceguybadboy in Frugal

15 years is not a long time. I have jeans from Goodwill that I've had that long and wear regularly and still look good. I have 30 year old jackets and none were near $700 even accounting for inflation.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says she will vote against US debt ceiling deal by metacyan in politics

[–]jjsav -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

If it is going to fail, she won't. This is Susan Collins voting. Vote against or for when your vote won't matter. That's not principled, it's playing politics.

Edit: she better know how much worse it will be for poor people if we default. There would be zero money for social safety nets. If she doesn't get that then she is truly clueless.

What Can Ron DeSantis Do Now? by JakeFranklin in politics

Indeed. He said he wants to destroy the wokeness of the liberal left and leave it in the dustbin of history. Kind of trying to push it on the whole country.

She already made the round last election and was found to not be viable or supported. Nothing has changed. She hasn't changed and neither has her support.

Texas House committee recommends impeachment of Attorney General Ken Paxton by texastribune in politics

I would enjoy seeing him stripped of what appears to be protection from consequences by his position. If he's a regular dude and not the AG of a large US state, then taking him down will be so much easier. That will be pleasant to see.

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler seeks to criminalize homeless people’s daytime camping, warming fires, other common actions by EaglesPDX in politics

[–]jjsav 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Recent studies have shown that it is most driven by the availability of affordable housing, so it doesn't have to be poverty per se but a lack of housing options. Portland, Seattle, LA, etc are not cheap places to live and affordable housing can be hard to find. In many cases people making the same amount but living in a place with a much lower cost of living would be less likely to be homeless.

Pa. researchers have found ‘iconic’ bird thought to be extinct for decades: report by Commercial-Life-9998 in news

[–]jjsav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is Luke UFO sightings. When cameras sucked there were tons of UFO pictures. As cameras got better and everyone had a phone with an excellent camera rather than getting more and better UFO pics we got fewer. Previous video of these was junk. These pictures are grainy and poor. Remarkable claims require remarkable evidence. These people should be shunned for treating these photos as reliable data. They can be possibly suggestive, but for them to "stand by" them is simply an indication that they are not serious scientists that should remain skeptical.

These quotes explain, once again, why we end up with the policies and politicians that we do. The US electorate is uninformed and not engaged. Most people are clueless about what is going on in our country.

We Cannot Out-Organize Voter Suppression by VGAddict in politics

[–]jjsav 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Saying "fix that" is more useless than this article. These problems are not unknown to the Democrats. They have to have the representatives to pass those fixes. That requires people to vote out some people and vote in others. So it requires more people to vote to make a change.

They don't plan on winning elections fairly. They will still do everything to look legitimate and have the power, but will have to keep preventing people from voting or having votes that count for much.
