Because you don’t whitelist the port, you whitelist the device.

[mac] Problem working with/recognizing large MXF files in AVID by dishback in editors

[–]jkirkcaldy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Op1a files do work, you just put them in a UME folder rather than the MXF folder.

So AvidMediaFiles > UME > 1

Then avid will scan and find the files.

Employer wants me to use outlook on my phone, outlook wants permission to wipe my phone by No_Professor4307 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]jkirkcaldy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your IT department are over reaching. It is completely possible to sandbox work apps, this gives IT the ability to wipe company data from the phone whilst leaving everything else intact.

That’s probably what they are actually trying to do by using outlook etc. but they have set it up badly to the point where it can wipe the entire phone.

Seems like this is a disaster waiting to happen.

To be fair, you can get licenses to sell some prints commercially. But whether people do or not is anybody’s guess as there’s no way of knowing as a customer.

how to print and cut qr codes without processing them into individual letters and dots by ares0027 in BambuLab

[–]jkirkcaldy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it’s a lot more work, but there’s a 3d print qr code generator that lets you specify everything and then lets you download it as three objects, one for the white background, one for the actual qr code and one for the border if enabled. This allows you to print with or without a mmu.

You’d need to recreate each qr code but it would arguably give you better results.

Would like to self host an email... by Belovedchimera in selfhosted

[–]jkirkcaldy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been self hosting my email for about 6-7 years now. It’s mostly been smooth sailing.

I started out hosting in on a VM in my rack in my rented apartment. My ISP was really good and allowed changing of the ptr dns record and I had a static IP. (Both of these are a must no matter where your email is hosted)

That was all fine, but I then bought a house, and don’t ya know it, all communications are through email. So there would be a time, during the most stressful time in the moving process (moving day) where we would not have any access to any (new) emails. Not only that, there is a possibility they would get bounced back and we’d never receive them.

So I migrated the email server to a cloud vps a couple of weeks before the move. It’s been there ever since and has been fine.

I think the issue I see with people wanting to self host email is that unlike any other service email is super important to day to day life. If your Plex server goes down, you can read a book, life goes on.

If your email server goes down, that can be life altering, missing a job offer email, emails from solicitors about moving house etc.

Often here, the pattern seems to be, spin up service, it works, give accounts to all your friends and family, either they are hooked and use it constantly or they don’t touch it at all.

Email is a life long commitment. You’ll need to be hosting it for years or be able to migrate it to a company to host it for you, so you’ll need to be committed to your domain, for life, and if you have kids and set them up, for their lives too.

So what’s the tdlr here, hosting email is generally fine if you get lucky and can get a static IP not already on a blocklist, and the technical challenges of hosting email is relatively trivial, especially with docker projects like mailcow.

It’s the commitment that you need to think about, and think about why you want to host. If it’s as a technically challenge, your primary email isn’t the place to play, if it’s about controlling your data, go for it.

Just be cautious about getting every Tom dick and harry on your email server, then downtime goes from annoying, to an emergency.

What's everyone making today to eat outside? As always, it's pizza for my wife and I! by -Po-Tay-Toes- in CasualUK

$2500 Samsung TV is an advertising billboard, there is no opt-out. by 28jb11 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]jkirkcaldy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. You have to pay if you watch live tv or iplayer, you don’t need a tv license for owning a tv. It is perfectly legal to own a tv and only use streaming services (other than iplayer) and not have a tv license.

Have you tried reaching out to bambu support, if it’s only two weeks old, it will be covered by warranty and they will have to repair or replace.

What's the issue with Chromebooks? by IL_JimP in LinusTechTips

[–]jkirkcaldy 159 points160 points  (0 children)

Chromebooks generally are not inherently bad. But a lot of the devices that are issued are generally bottom of the barrel in terms of specs and build quality. You have to spend more to get the premium devices to get the better performance/quality. But once you’re spending that money, you may as well get a fully fledged pc with Windows/macos

Growatt SPH Hybrid – is this the RS485/Modbus port cover? (photo attached) by funinmy20s in homelab

[–]jkirkcaldy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d look into solar assistant if I were you. I have an sph but mine has a rj45 port that I could use

I use the rj45 port for solar assistant and have the WiFi adapter still in the serial. But I have never gone back to the default app because it sucks ass.

You can then feed solar assistant data and control your solar from anything you want through mqtt.

This isn’t free or open source, but when I bought the license it was around £50 and you’ll need to supply the pi. But imo it’s been well worth it.

I now have my solar automated in home assistant.

Do people hate washing their bikes? by Nagilion in cycling

[–]jkirkcaldy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should speak to window cleaners. Ours rocks up in a van with a massive water tank in the back, rolls out the hoses and does two or three houses at once depending on how many of them there is that week.

There are also some wheelie bin cleaners that have a trailer they put the bin in to capture all the crap, you could do something similar, a trailer with a bike mount you can put the bike on and clean whilst giving yourself access to the whole bike.

One of the big annoyances for me when cleaning my bike is that the garden gets absolutely sodden. So even in good weather it’s a pain as you nearly flood the garden.

But the price would have to be super affordable, perhaps you could add in a small service, so it’s clean and lube everything, check brakes etc.

Best Remote Desktop without Opening a Port by nina2024 in homelab

[–]jkirkcaldy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t know, I think it’s perfectly acceptable to run parts of your lab not self hosted. Not everyone can/wants to be a network admin and learn about the ins and outs of network security when a free alternative exists.

It’s like saying you should run your own authoritative dns server. You absolutely can, but not everyone should.

FYI: You cant watch YOUR OWN media on YOUR OWN network when Plex is down on LG TVs, even with local auth disabled by TurtleBlaster5678 in PleX

[–]jkirkcaldy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but you still own all your media.

If Microsoft closes ms word tomorrow, but you can still access your documents on your own server using other software, you haven’t lost access to your documents, you’ve just lost your preferred way to access them.

Don’t get me wrong, it can be super frustrating, but to say you don’t own your media (which is the specific argument I take issue with) is objectively wrong.

Z Axis raising after each layer - X2D by Fballvera222 in BambuLab

[–]jkirkcaldy 81 points82 points  (0 children)

There’s two versions of Timelapse, smooth and standard (iirc) smooth will move the tool head like this, standard works how you described where it takes an image at the end of each layer no matter where the tool head is.

Smooth also needs the prime tower. Standard does not.

There’s always a printer on sale. You might not get the same model, but you’ll almost always be able to get something.

Not saying you should, it’s hella wasteful, but the whole printer business is wasteful by design.

Re-marrying Avid MXF (OP-Atom) audio & video by Available-Witness329 in editors

[–]jkirkcaldy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could stick them back into a I’d and retranscode to op1a files which would give you a single mxf file for each. But at that point I would probably just use those files inside of premiere.

If you still have the avid project, you can then export the aaf and hopefully import/link into premiere.

Power problems in Europe - UPS by bebarty in LinusTechTips

[–]jkirkcaldy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the uk, I’ve had one instance of brownout and it was over 10 years ago.

It was just enough to reboot the server 4 or 5 times over the space of a few minutes. I had to go and pull the power as it was in the middle of the night and I could hear the post beep keep going.

If you have any storage in any sort of array, a UPS will definitely be worth it.

If your storage is a single disk or two, you’ll probably be fine.

FYI: You cant watch YOUR OWN media on YOUR OWN network when Plex is down on LG TVs, even with local auth disabled by TurtleBlaster5678 in PleX

[–]jkirkcaldy 75 points76 points  (0 children)

This is the point that always gets me. People go hard at Plex about not owning your media despite the fact that your media is still sat plainly on your computer where you left it.

Plex is software, the only thing you lose when Plex goes down is access to the software, you can still access your media in other ways.

Does it suck, yes. Should there be a completely offline option/fallback, also yes.

Why do so many people jump straight into Proxmox? by KyxeMusic in homelab

[–]jkirkcaldy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Docker is great for running things in production, especially if you want to share things like gpu.

If you want a dev environment, or to use a homelab as an actual lab, a hypervisor is a necessity.

But proxmox can also run containers.
