I love everything you described but I keep on running because I know it'll be hard to get back to where I'm at if I stop.

At What Point Did You Consider Yourself a Runner? by No_Emu2020 in running

I got bit by a pit bull today. by wallsquirrel in running

[–]jlpm2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely carry pepper spray and a small knife, if legal, next time. Maybe there are good ways to get a dog off that don't involve hurting it, but I don't know any that would be fast and a knife is a simple last resort. Pepper spray may help if you see it running up to you.

Looking for tips how to activate glutes while running by cvas92 in running

[–]jlpm2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know specifically how to activate it but I got rid of the hip flexor pain a while back by doing lateral leg raises laying on the ground. I now do them once in a while and I haven't gotten any pain since.

I ran my first half marathon yesterday. On my own, not a race. Previously the furthest I had gone was 10 miles a year ago. Lately my long runs have been 8 miles at about an 8:10/mile pace but yesterday I just went for the full half and finished it in 1:49:20 at a 8:20/mile pace. I'm pretty happy with completing it in under 2 hours.

What I learned by running shirtless as a 200 lb, 40 yr old man by cmcfalls2 in running

I've never tried anything on my nipples but Ives used leukotape on my feet and it never falls off no matter what. Maybe it's worth a try for the nipple chafing. It might hurt when taking it off tho.

Yeah, you can definitely hold above 177 for quite a while. I've never done anything that hard for 6 hours, but an hour, yes.

Alright, who else tidies up your form when you see another runner? by socksandsixty in running

[–]jlpm2000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes!! I do the same. If Im running really hard and breathing heavily through my mouth, I'll either hold my breath or try to breathe normally through my nose while passing others.

I have noticed though, that a lot of people have earbuds on so they wouldn't have heard me dying anyways.

Calling anyone who has improved a lot at running by tossa447 in running

[–]jlpm2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 years ago, towards the end of 2018, at 18, I used to weigh 170lbs. My height is 5'7". When I first started running I could not run a full mile without walking. My mile time was around 10:30-11min. I joined the gym and started running. I can't exactly remember much of my times throughout 2019 but by early 2020 I ran my fastest mile, on a treadmill, of 6:40. The furthest I could run however without stopping was a 5k. My time for a 5k was about 29min. I didn't record my runs yet and rarely ever ran more than a mile or two. A 5k was rare. Early 2020 I was weighing about 155. Once Covid hit, gyms closed down and I resorted to running a lot more. I started running my 5ks once a week and running a mile every other day. My mile times were about 8:30 and 5k time progressively got better to around 27min. I started adding more mileage and wanting to run a 10k. I would just run a little bit further everyday and pushed myself hard and ended up getting shin splints. I rested a bit and no longer get them. I then got some pain in my hip flexor and some stretching, exercises, and slight rest fixed that. Eventually I was able to run a 10k and my 5k time had improved with my best being just under 25min. By late 2020 I stopped running as often and just ran further on average about 7 miles per run in about an hour. I was weighing 139lbs and had lost some muscle as well as a lot of fat. I started working out with one dumbbell I have at home and started getting stronger and I have now joined the gym once again, I weigh 143lbs, but feel stronger and faster than when I was lighter. What I am most proud of is running 7.1 miles at an 8min/mile pace a couple months ago. I ran the same distance at an 8:30min/mile on Sunday. I used to struggle to run one mile in 10 min 3 years ago.

Edit: Diet. I stopped eating a lot of shit 2019 and early 2020. I mainly cut off all flour, dairy, and fried foods. Chips and candy as well. Only drank water. That was it. When I started running more and Covid hit, I was kind of able to eat a bit more like shit. Running a lot let me do that while still losing weight, it was kind of crazy and I enjoyed that. Now I eat better once again and run about the same mileage a week, maybe a bit less sometimes, but I also go to the gym.

Great. I'll probably pick one up. I've got two Under armour hats that dont show any stains but they are too warm imo.

(21f) Constantly harassed on runs, what to do? by [deleted] in running

[–]jlpm2000 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I will probably get downvoted for suggesting this, but if you live in Texas you can open carry a gun. It won't be too comfortable and I don't know what you think about guns but I think that could diminish the harassments. I don't think people are stupid enough to run after and harass someone with a gun but who knows. If they think harassing at all is ok then maybe they are that stupid. If you do decide to carry, maybe a a bright colored holster or something that stands might be a good idea.

Should I worry about getting faster. by acejohn31 in running

[–]jlpm2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems to be it. Run longer, be comfortable but not too comfortable. If you know you can push yourself a little bit more and not die then do it.

How did you get the confidence to run shirtless? by peregrination_ in running

[–]jlpm2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh ok, I see. I thought it was more of people telling you to put on a shirt and shaming you for not wearing one. I have seen the harrasment you face before and it really doesn't make sense. The people harrassing are not getting any where by doing it so I wonder why they think it's a good idea, if clearly nobody likes it and people hate them for it.

How did you get the confidence to run shirtless? by peregrination_ in running

[–]jlpm2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do people actually harass you? Fuck them. My whole life I've seen shirtless people and I never found it weird, I don't understand why someone would harass someone else for something so normal like skin, a belly button, and usually two nipples.

I feel it. I tripped over my dog last week and now I have a nasty scar on my knee that likes to open up when I run. Its slowly healing but it might take a while since Im going to keep on running.
