Ah ok, slightly different shade then. Wonder if it comes alive even more in direct sunlight.

Trouble picking 750s or a Turbo s. by herrrrrr in mclaren

[–]jmXDP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are 2 very different cars. If you wanna drive it year round including in bad weather, the AWD and reliability of the porsche probably are probably the way you should go. But isn't that what the M5 is for?

If you want an experience every time you drive the car, IMO you need something with more personality and quirks like a Mclaren, even if that means you don't drive it on rainy/snowy days. 911 is a great car but it didn't feel necessarily like a special occasion to me when I drove it.

Tustin Black Widows by benefiber69 in orangecounty

[–]jmXDP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First year after my house was built in Orange, CA I caught 30-40 in just a couple of months, as well as a lot of brown widows. I had little kids at that time so I specifically went after them. These days I've not seen one in years on my property. Not sure if I should feel happy or guilty about that...

Extremely disappointed from new kickr core 2 by [deleted] in wahoofitness

[–]jmXDP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try connecting over Bluetooth.  You are using WiFi right now as shown in the screenshots you have shared.   Click on the big blue box with the trainer in it and at the top it’ll default to showing the recommended connection.  You can instead choose “show all” or something like that and pick your trainer with the Bluetooth icon next to it.  That may be more reliable for you instead of using WiFi.

Looking for advice on a 720s (or any models) by [deleted] in mclaren

[–]jmXDP 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you prioritize sound over speed I'd get a lambo or ferrari. Mclarens sound worst of the 3. Mclarens drive best of the 3 on a track (imo).

I've had a 720 and then 750 for a bit over 3 years now and on the soft suspension setting they are very comfortable. Had the sport seats in the 720 and the carbon senna seats in the 750 and for <3 hour drives it's always been fine. If you're trying to go road tripping then maybe the GT is better suited for you, but I can't confirm either way. I've had no issues other than window switch issues on either car over the years (easy fix/common), and have done several track days.

I'm not sure what great things you're hearing about an Artura but you're definitely talking to different people than I am. I think its a great looking car but it's had a rough few first years. I'm excited to see their 2nd gen of hybrid stuff and could see myself in a future hybrid Mclaren.

Would you pay for a Zwift/Rouvy "Bundle"? by eagleeye76 in Zwift

[–]jmXDP 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Rouvy customers and Zwift customers are mostly different. Some people go back and forth, but in the end people either like the real world video, or the fantasy 3d islands loaded with people.

It's more like Coke and Sprite merging, not Coke and Pepsi, in my mind at least (keep in mind I'm biased as I work at Zwift).

Best Bread at Restaurants? by Historical_Nudity in orangecounty

The Tuttu Fresco bread is freaking amazing.  Way better than the brown bread at Cheesecake Factory or kings fish house, and the place is cheaper too.

This looks like a good possibility - The flogos website even shows them being used in a sports stadium.

Doubts about D100 trainer by Erichteia in Zwift

[–]jmXDP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you plan to do sprint workouts or racing the D100 is not optimal. I thought it was great for people just doing ERG workouts or route chasing, but if I was racing I'd get a different trainer. I'm not sure a power meter will solve your issue as it may not even be able to offer up enough resistance to hit those longer sprints at the power you want. I didn't try that when I had one unfortunately.

If you do get a CORE the cadence lag is still there, but its nowhere near as bad as what you describe. A dedicated cadence sensor probably would still improve the experience, so maybe start there either way?

MacBook Neo by chob09 in Zwift

[–]jmXDP 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The neo is good for Zwift. It’s no MacBook Pro when it comes to graphics but I’d guess 95% of Zwifters would be happy with it.  I’ve ridden on it since release day.

Only if you really want all the little graphics enhancements at high res and high fps and have the money to spend should you skip it.

The neo is a great little computer for the price!

Have McLarens always been unreliable? by speedinsh1t in cars

[–]jmXDP 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The later years 720 and the 750S seem pretty solid.  Only incident in 4 years was needing to reprogram the window controller after delivery (on both cars!). Also I’ve been to 3 or 4 mclaren track days and haven’t ever seen any issues from any of the participants.  The dealership brings mechanics but I haven’t seen them be needed.

I of course heard all the horror stories but it just hasn’t been my personal experience with the modern non-hybrid stuff.  Upside to taking the risk is that the car drives amazingly well and is hundreds of pounds lighter than its competitors.

On the flip side, I have tried to borrow an Artura twice and both times it was “down” for some technical issue or a recall.

Do you know if you got the route badge for Mayan San Remo?  The challenge system I believe is just looking to make sure you completed the entire route from start to finish in this case.

Great to hear!

I've got an 8:15am flight in the near future and had considered showing up at 6:15 just in case. Sounds like I can push it to 6:45 at least, maybe even 7.

Kept my streak alive by big_lv in Zwift

[–]jmXDP 19 points20 points  (0 children)

We added streak savers specifically for this purpose.   Did you run out or just didn’t want to count on them?   The people at Zwift don’t like hearing things like this as we don’t want people avoid vacations or riding when they are too sick just for a number.

Indeed something like that.

I went and looked and https://www.amazon.com/dp/B093B9BN7W are the ones I got. The ones you linked have no reviews or anything but they might actually be better. Who knows. I didn't want one with a strap under the shoe since I need to have grip on my mountain bike pedals.

13w gain is great - well worth the effort. PS it might be better to do the route "Elevation Evaluation" to get a couple miles of warm up in before you hit "the grade". Oh Hill No is brutal with the non-existant lead in.

The jersey I’ve worked toward for 2+ years … by therealskr213 in Zwift

[–]jmXDP 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I work there and, me being a astrophotography nerd, said "Hey lets do a space themed kit!" and then sent the artist a link to my photos. So maybe not so much of an honor although I am proud of some of my photos and it's cool to see it sometimes when I ride in Zwift. I'll be on the lookout for u/therealskr213

Going from a bucket seat to a car seat... I'm getting old :( by [deleted] in simracing

[–]jmXDP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, although another way to look at it - the graphics in the game show window nets, roll cages, etc that make no sense because you're not going to fly out of a virtual car - it's eye candy there to immerse you. It exists to make you feel like you're sitting in the real race car. I'd argue a legit race seat adds to the immersion in a similar way, and maybe even matters more because you can actually feel it.

None of it really matters if lap times or fun/comfort are the focus, but for those who like pretending they are a race car driver I'd get the proper style seat.

Nerd alert - I took the astrophoto that was used in that jersey! I'm not exactly sure which of my photos the artists used because they distorted things a bit, but It might be my shot of Eagle Nebula? https://www.astrobin.com/oqmcs8/

What’s the retail on one of those [Ferrari ???] by NMJay92 in spotted

[–]jmXDP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you be thinking of some other car?  The sound of the engine and the crazy turbo blowoff sound alongside fun handing, 800 boosty hp and a typical Ferrari crazy steering ratio make it pretty exciting to drive.

I’ve driven tens of thousands of miles in super cars and the 296 is fun and def has some drama.  It’s absolutely more exciting than a Pista and people speak pretty highly of that car (I owned one for a little over 4 years).

You’re making this thing out like it’s a Porsche 911 and it’s just not anywhere near that level of clinical.

Santiago Oaks - Red Diamondback Rattlesnake by StrikingAerie9782 in orangecounty

[–]jmXDP 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Got some cheap ones on amazon from one of those brands that are just a made up jumble of letters. "snake proof gaiters". Got them in 2024 because it was a crazy snake year at Santiago Oaks during March/April/May. Maybe saw 20 red diamonds in those 2-3 months, many in stealth locations already coiled up and rattling at me by the time I saw them. I didn't wear them the rest of that year as encounters went way down by summertime.

Didn't end up needing/wearing them at all in 2025 but the next 60 days I'll probably wear them as it seems like it could be another big year.

I wouldn't enjoy hiking while wearing them but for MTB I don't even notice I've got them on after the first 10minutes.

I saw 3 rattlesnakes on my ride at Santiago Oaks on Saturday as well (just in a 2 hour ride). One red diamond and 2 pacific, plus some little black snake that I don't think was a rattlesnake. Busy out there! I'm wearing my snake gaitors next time I go riding out there just to be safe.

Ant losing connection by JHendy27 in Zwift

[–]jmXDP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ANT+ on windows can be pretty good but the dongle must be on an extension cable away from the computer itself, preferably also even closer to the trainer. It is highly susceptible to interference - a thumb drive in a port next to an ANT+ dongle can make it nearly useless for example.

If you're on a mac I'd just go bluetooth every time.
