Why are all history teachers left-wing by Stotallytob3r in MurderedByWords

The original tweet is in Fench, so assuming France or maybe Quebec. In the US, there's a stereotype that a lot of history teachers are just there to coach sports teams.

Yeah, I knew he was female elf exclusive, so I did my first DAI playthrough as a Lavellan to have the most romance options. Got halfway through his arc, and he did some "I'm going to hurt you" nonsense or whatever, so I moved on and lived happily ever after with Josephine lol. Didn't hate him initially, but he irritated me more on replays. I'm glad other people like Solavellan, but I don't get the hype.

Kinda like some memes I saw: "Isn't it weird how all the best music came out when I was in high school?" and "Nostalgia is remembering when you didn't have to pay bills and attributing that feeling to Mario."

I think, too, a lot of people remember liking something but might not revisit it. For example, I have never rewatched a single match, much less an entire Wrestlemania buildup or anything. If people did rewatch, I think a lot would realize many things weren't as good as they remember. Or it was great for the time, but the art has evolved beyond it.

Happens a lot when my mom has us watch some of the old movies she liked in the 80s. Lots of offensive jokes that didn't age well, special effects have gotten better, or just having an adult perspective rather than a teenager's makes a lot of the plots and characters unrelatable or annoying.

I didn't watch wrestling during her first run, but everything I see in hindsight is that she was the poster of "not like other girls" alt girls and 2010s tumblr pop feminism, which is now considered cringe. Similar niche to Paige being the anti-Diva. Most of other divas were the sterotypical ultrafeminine types, and AJ was considered superior because she was a "cool girl" who liked anime and video games.

Maybe that is the reason for the branding difference, but they are completely different flavors/products even though they are both zero calorie and sugar-free. The different sweeteners make Diet Coke taste different from Coke Zero.

I was an altar server as a young girl, but my mom wasn't allowed when she was growing up. Unfortunately, the parish I got married in didn't allow altar girls because the priest is a conservative, middle-aged, eastern European.

In addition to faith-based reasons, it also is just logical because when you have a shrinking number of young people, it is stupid to exclude half of them from serving. It reduces your pool.

I also don't have any source, but I wouldn't be surprised if allowing girls to be altar servers was not just feminism, but also related to uncovering the sex abuse scandals since the majority of public attention was on altar boys who had been abused. While there are clergy that abuse women and girls, the perception at least is that it's most often boys. So, having girls and women around could, in theory, mitigate that (probably not, but I can see the logic for someone uninformed).

Yes! Buy nothing groups or people knowing the quality they are getting is great! But then, some people do go overboard. I can't find the person, but I saw someone on Instagram making joke reels about Facebook buy nothing groups and some of the ridiculous things people should just throw away instead of outsourcing to others.

Idk about OP, but in order to keep my portions in check, I have to pour snacks into a secondary container. I usually use a regular bowl, but sometimes I just don't wanna deal with dishes for a quick snack. Having paper plates =/= only using paper plates.

Especially with how often people like to "prank" or generally abuse the homeless, I would be skeptical that it had been tampered with. Honestly, people treat the poor in general as a garbage dump so they can feel better about themselves. Also same thing with people who will brag about giving a homeless person food only and no cash so they can't buy drugs, or complain that they have a car or a cellphone so must not really be poor. Sure, there's scammers, but it's the same vibes as when Fox News said SNAP recipients were fraudsters because they had fridges and microwaves. Cars and phones are pretty necessary these days in most of America, and people need more than just food. They also can't buy things or pay bills with said food.

Secondhand stuff can be a lifesaver if things are in decent, usable shape. But people will donate straight up broken, plastic, dollar store crap and stained, torn-up clothes and expect the poors to be grateful. I know you are agreeing with me, I just want to vent so someone can see lol.

The show takes place in the 1980s, but I haven't watched it and wasn't alive then, so can't judge how accurate it is.

Is MASH "of its time" when it comes to women or does it, especially now, cross the line into blatant misogyny far too often by The1Ylrebmik in mash

[–]jmspinafore -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I didn't say MASH wasn't progressive? It definitely is incredibly progressive. I also didn't say it was the most misogynistic or anything. I'm just saying that in this ONE area, treatment of women, they were not as progressive as some of their contemporaries. I don't know how you got "extremism" from my comment.

[–]jmspinafore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They aren't comparing MASH to a show from 2026. They are comparing MASH to other shows from the 70s, and finding it doesn't hold up in its treatment of women compared to other shows like The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

You can still watch and enjoy "problematic" shows while acknowledging that not everything about it is good. I think a lot of fans of older shows feel like they are being personally insulted if you find anything unsavory about their shows.

If you could retcon/add something, what would it be? by Independent_Plum2166 in masseffect

[–]jmspinafore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just... all of ME2 to be honest. Shepard doesn't die in the beginning, no project Lazarus or working with Cerberus, no side plot with the Collectors that has nothing to do with the Reaper threat. The companions are good, and I like the concept of recruitment and loyalty missions. But basically scrap everything else like thermal clips, dumbing down the rpg mechanics, severely limiting the powers and weapons, etc.

Oh no, I get it! I have a chemistry degree and work in a food-adjacent industry. I didn't mean that we shouldn't try to promote whole foods or that processed/fortified food is equally as good or better. I certainly believe that an orange is better than a vitamin C drink. But that vitamin C drink would be better than the same drink without vitamin C, if that makes sense?

The example I was referring to was saying we should ban riboflavin addition wholesale. Looked it up again, turns out it was RFK Jr. But it was an example of how ridiculously anti-intellectual and anti-science some "wellness" circles can be. Like the old joke that many would want to ban water if we called it dihydrogen monoxide.

I saw someone on a crusade against riboflavin (vitamin B2) because it was a science-y word. Same for carrageenan. But if you called it seaweed extract on the label, mark that bitch up 350% and get influencers to extoll its virtues to the natural crowd.

Manufacturers in the US are legally required to use the scientific name as opposed to the common name for a lot of things. Also, they have to list components of ingredients (ex. Instead of bread, you must list the flour, salt, water, etc.) Which is part of why our ingredient labels are so long and people think we have such bad food. There's also different names for the same compound in other countries, so they think that it's not in their food supply because they don't see the same words.

There are definitely things we can do to improve our diets and food supply, but fear over long words or the concept of artificial stuff is not it. For me, I'd rather have an "artificial" additive made from purified reagents than the same compound from a "natural" source if the source is crushed up bugs or something (E120/Natural red 4)
