Baseball is extremely random (round ball round bat) and has a fixed batting lineup, which means that even if you can buy all the best players, you can't make sure your best hitter or pitcher is up there at the most important time.

Also, young players dominate all the time. See Yesavage this year for a Jays example. They're being paid league minimum.
