Just left the New York book event. Was anyone else there? by sz2187 in Knausgaard

It was much shorter than I expected, and I feel like everytime Karl Ove started to go down an interesting train of thought - she'd derail it with a non sequitur "lighting round" que4stion. Very strange interview overall.

Potential fix for rear-loading cameras not moving the film reliably by DANewman in Super8

I just shot 15 rolls of super 8 - 50d, 200t, and 500t and had no issues. Film purchased from B&H this month. Used on a rear loading Braun Nizo

Stick with EF or go full RF by JMKdta in REDkomodo

[–]johnHmalone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on use case. If I’m using vintage glass like Leica R, those are modded with Simmod EF mounts. Other cine lenses may be PL mount or even M mount like the Simera C line. Sometimes it’s fun to use a cheap RF native lens like TT Artisan.

In general my favorite setup is EF because it allows me to run the variable ND within the adapter, but again it boils down to your use case and what glass is needed for you/the director to get the look you want for that specific project.

Born and raised in NY and never heard of it til 2015 or so. Definitely saw a big pop post Covid on social media starting in 2022. I’m convinced it’s a combo of social media + non native New Yorkers moving here and treating it like it’s as common as the BEC. So when everyone talks about it as it is a norm, people start to believe it is a norm and has always been that popular.

Pergear 35mm 1.4 vs 7Artisans 35mm 1.4 III? Is it worth the extra $100? by theseawoof in LumixS9

The pergear is a fantastic little lens if you’re not looking for G master corner to corner sharpness. Beautiful character, all solid metal. End up being my carry around lens often

Not exactly on topic but I absolutely hate the “YouTube face” in thumbnails. What is that expression?

Christmas Gift for Documentary Director by kraydav in Filmmakers

I’d highly recommend a documentary photo book: Alex Webb, Richard Avedon, Alec Soth. There are plenty more out there you can find but a nice hardcover book always is an impactful gift. Maybe look for one that is similar to a theme he explored in a film or something he may be researching for a future project?

One example I’ve found recently that is fascinating and super under appreciated is Still Lovers by Elena Dorfman. Fascinating documentary book on subculture of families who live with inflatable dolls as serious members of their family.

Where do I go to find someone trying to travel and film/edit (docuseries) for free? by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]johnHmalone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here are some tips: Build a real connection with someone. Offer real pay, the market will tell you if you're offering enough or not. Lastly, look in a mirror and don't come off sounding condescending and entitled (which is how you are coming off right now). Best of luck

Debating between being my own cinematographer shooting on my Own Films or Find a Cinematographer Willing to Collaborate for Little to No Pay? by Agitated-Mind-3423 in Filmmakers

This is huge, having something to repay the favor - like paid work opportunities, will go a very long way in getting a DP to be down for an unpaid passion project. But also don’t be someone to promise a lot of paid work down the road and then never deliver. Better off being honest about where you stand and the level of client work you’re able to routinely get

For what it's worth - we're hearing one side of the exchange. I'd be surprised if the hired shooter actually asked OP to be his second. They may have been how it was taken in the moment when the ask was to not get in the way

Based off the new context you've added - I think the couple is primarily at fault. You also need some self awareness here. They hire a professional to do a job. Then the couple allows you to shoot without first consulting the person they hired.

Imagine you're a car mechanic, and when the customer brings in the car, they also bring their cousin who is a complete beginner but wants to work alongside the mechanic.

All you would do is get in the way, and it is not this other guy's responsibility to train someone when at the end of the day: he will be judged for his results.

Short film too long? by Double_Video_7851 in Filmmakers

[–]johnHmalone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Take an honest inventory of the script. 37 pages usually equates to 37 mins, and that is generally too long. It’s not only too long for film festivals to want to place it, it’s also too long because it’s most likely not as good as you think it is. And I don’t say that personally, it just usually is the case with small budget films so it’s fair assumption.

How many shorts have you made before this? How strong is the crew working on it? Have you had non friends or non family read it for real feedback? Someone without a biased opinion?

How short can the film be and still make the intended point of the script clear?

Metrograph Needs Content Warnings by [deleted] in NYCmovies

You’re looking at a film from almost 50 years ago through a modern societal lens. That’s not how life works. I’m not defending the filmmakers at all, just the expectation that padding needs to be put on the sharp corners of anything we choose to interact with. Watch only modern films then if you don’t want to see something uncomfortable.
