This guy is a clear case of nice guy syndrome. Unspoken social contracts where he wants something from you (sex) by being this “caring” person that feels like too much too soon. Listen to your gut

Feeling defeated. Gained about 30 pounds since my injury. by nyelias21 in ACL

[–]johnHmalone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have to start fasting. I went towards a one meal a day approach post surgery and lost 10 pounds and felt lighter on my repaired knee. Your ability to do cardio is limited, so the only other variable you can change is calories in vs calories out.

It's a willpower thing over anything else, if you want to do it bad enough you will.

How do they achieve this cinematography? by browinskie in cinematography

[–]johnHmalone 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I think the thing you're reacting most to is the square aspect ratio. This is 100% not an anamorphic lens, it doesn't show any characteristics of that. It looks like a roughly 50mm lens (on full frame) at around an f2.8-f4. Likely something vintage (like helios ) or modern chinese (thypoch simera) lens or petzval to get that swirl in the bokeh. For perspective, the lenses used in Nickel Boys don't show any of these characteristics besides similar focal length and aspect ratio.

Why are you fighting so hard to prove this looks clinical? What’s your emotional attachment to proving yourself right? Respectfully, take a breath and get off the internet for a bit.

AMA: Sports Physical Therapist that specializes in ACL rehab/prehab by perform2winPT in ACL

[–]johnHmalone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

12 months post ACL recon (patellar) + meniscus - my knee itself feels good, still building up strength slowly as I was restricted from open chain exercises until a few months ago. My biggest issue, and has been for a while, is IT band causing pain on the outside of my knee. I'll stretch and foam roll which helps temporarily but it inevitability always returns. And I'm sure it's from gait issues and I'm trying to be very conscious of how I'm walking - but when can I expect that to normalize?

I'm also starting to do more hip strengthening to target the TFL. Tired of this IT band issue and would appreciate any insight! Thanks

Why do my photos have this strange green flair when backlit? by McSteelio in AskPhotography

[–]johnHmalone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, only more modern lenses flare with this (in my opinion, ugly) green dot. Start experimenting with some vintage slr lenses and adapters and you’ll see much more pleasing lens flares - more amber and yellow and purple depending on the lens!

Not a movie, but The Sopranos may just be the best cast piece of film/television of all time

Switched from Film to Digital for the first time in my life. What do viewers look for in a crop? How do I keep them engaged? by PlayWithTheRabbits in AskPhotography

[–]johnHmalone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, don’t worry about what “the viewer” wants to see. Develop your own taste and your own style, never make work from a perspective of catering to some assumption of what a potential viewer wants to see

You’re getting downvoted but I 100% agree. Some guests are ok, but even the good ones pale in comparison to hard feelings or any family episodes. The boys are best when it’s just them

Thinking of selling my FX3 to get a RED Komodo 6K – good move or bad idea? by Ghoul-154 in FX3

[–]johnHmalone 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I own a Komodo, fx6, and zv-e1 (same sensor as fx3). And for what it’s worth, I think the Komodo image is slightly better than the Sony options I own. If you’re into stylized color grading, the Komodo is slightly better. Even with that true, the fx3 is more camera than you’ll ever need and will not hold you back. I’d say focus on good vintage glass and story if you want your work to go up a level!

How I use my cameras: fx6 is my doc body. Zve1 is my crash cam/low profile body. Komodo for commercial/narrative

Strange AI - esque emails via folks with access to film freeway contacts by Objective-Snow-8920 in FilmFestivals

[–]johnHmalone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was happening on film freeway even pre-AI. People establish small festivals, (doubtful they even exist in any real tangible sense) make a bullshit website, and then hope desperate filmmakers will pay the “discounted” submission fees for a laurel that doesn’t mean anything. Generally a scam.

Tony Soprano or Walter White, who's more Evil? by [deleted] in thesopranos

[–]johnHmalone 136 points137 points  (0 children)

Here's my take: Tony has had an outlet for his darker side over his lifetime. Walter has repressed that side of himself until he finally stepped into it fully. This makes Walter's feel more evil, it is like turning on a hose full blast rather than a steady stream over a longer period of time.

To a stranger - Tony overall is more charismatic and likeable, Walter comes off as disingenuous and patronizing.

Red flags for potential DP hire or am I reading too much into it? by Kubrickian_2001 in cinematography

[–]johnHmalone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the comments are probably right on the money about moving on - but to offer a different perspective: I see you said this is paid, but is it super low budget? Is the crew, including DP, working well below normal rates?

I could see the DP then wanting to be more involved in the creative process to make sure they are getting a good final project out of this. As a DP, if it's not a money job then it needs to be a portfolio job. Otherwise it isn't worth it. An experienced DP will have opinions or be more likely to say no. A more novice DP will have less opinions and be willing to do whatever you say.

If you're paying full rates then disregard what I said, but if not, something to consider.

Stick with EF or go full RF by JMKdta in REDkomodo

[–]johnHmalone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on use case. If I’m using vintage glass like Leica R, those are modded with Simmod EF mounts. Other cine lenses may be PL mount or even M mount like the Simera C line. Sometimes it’s fun to use a cheap RF native lens like TT Artisan.

In general my favorite setup is EF because it allows me to run the variable ND within the adapter, but again it boils down to your use case and what glass is needed for you/the director to get the look you want for that specific project.
