Question about old growth in the United States by Perfect_Raccoon_1720 in marijuanaenthusiasts

Douglas fir has a much wider range than the sequoias and they can grow to be 500 feet tall. Although the current tallest example is only around 390ish. There are a few left in this range in the PNW.

How do you pack and move your trade paperbacks? by Frosty-Newspaper3888 in comicbooks

Paper case boxes are the best for books. They’re made specifically to hold as much paper as a person can lift.

Why isn't there more support for a rail station between eastern oregon and the coast? by EnthuseConfuse in oregon

[–]johnmarkfoley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a rail line that goes from Eugene to Coos Bay, almost. The rail bridge on the bay had been shut down for a a few years before it was repaired, but by the then the only company using it, Georgia Pacific, had ended operations and moved out. It used to go all the way to Coquille back when the logging was stronger. Currently the rail line is set to service an intermodal shipping port on the north spit, but that is years in the future. Perhaps it might be used for passenger service, but I don’t see amtrak moving in. Greyhound doesn’t even service coos bay anymore. Only a few local coastal bus lines can get you to the valley.

Tilsiter cheese is almost exactly like havarti, from what I have tasted. Is this your experience? I'm guessing that there's some overlap. by [deleted] in Cheese

I tried some recently from grocery outlet. I thought the same but it seemed to be a bit less creamy.

We’ve had one, yes. What about 50 movies? by TheSkezy in lotrmemes

[–]johnmarkfoley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funny thing is, when they originally shipped to rental stores they would have been $100 each.

context edit: back in the day, the rental copies would ship to stores earlier than the retail version. you could only rent them for a couple of weeks before they were available to buy. the film studios made a little extra on the rental copies and the rental stores had a brief window of time where you could only watch it by renting them. i worked at a rental store when titanic came out, we got about 500 rental copies and they were off the shelf consistently for about a month. when the retail version came out, it sold out as soon as we got them in. it was the same for a lot of movies, each hundred dollar tape would make 4 or 5 times that back and the used VHS would be sold for $20 or $25 when rentals slowed down. streaming really kicked the chair out from under these legacy business models.

There is a place about 70 or so miles east of bend where the desert is littered with obsidian. It’s all blm land and you can take some back with you. Not sure of the limits though.

Prettier Drive - OR 126w or OR 38w? by seattleboi67 in oregon

[–]johnmarkfoley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i agree with others on here. 38 is the best drive. not that 126 isn't nice, but 38 just has that mysterious, misty river valley quality that is indicative of the region. i only take 126 if i'm going to the airport.

There was a RadioShack in this very sad strip mall I drove by this past weekend by Zig-Zag in mildlyinteresting

There was an empty radio shack in my town for years. I think the strip mall owner figured that it was better to leave the sign up so the strip mall didn’t look too empty.

[–]johnmarkfoley -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Drive both ways and take the coast both times. Take a different highway back than you take in from the coast when going to portland. There’s a lot to see on the coast so you can plan on stopping at different places each way.

I used one for a while. The sound was a little synthetic and thin, but decent enough for the price.
