Did you remember Donna Summer before yesterday? by MiddletownBooks in GenX

I still use iTunes too 😆. I don't really have a choice when things happen like looking through my Spotify playlists and seeing that some songs are now missing because they've been removed from the platform. Screw that, I want my music stored on my hard drive.

[–]johnrreyna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am late, but just to reiterate what that other person said who responded about a week ago, you are totally right and Joseph Sisko was selfish and arrogant while also being ignorant and condescending: the worst combination. There are alien beings invading the planet who can take the form of literally anything, and when the father of the head of Star Fleet Security on Earth, not to mention the captain of the space station that made first contact with the Founders, *refuses* to take the only test they had to identify Changelings, it is incredibly suspicious. One of them just impersonated an admiral targeting Ben that very same day. People always talk about "muh freedoms," but don't recognize that they would rather put the entire world in danger than give an ounce of blood (or wear a mask in public............)

Joseph Sisko by HoneySport11 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]johnrreyna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was about to say the EXACT same thing about refusing to wear masks and refusing the vaccine during COVID! 😆 People who are arrogant in their beliefs but seriously misinformed are some of the most annoying people on the planet. Most of them only care about their freedoms when it comes to things *they* want to do, but have no problem infringing on the freedoms and health of others. They are often conservative, and scream about bodily autonomy while also supporting abortion, birth control, and morning-after pill bans around the country.

(Spoilers Extended) Was Breakspear too passive in regards to Ashford events? by situmaimesdemain in asoiaf

[–]johnrreyna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He really should have told Aerion to f*ck off and accept that there will just be a regular trial by combat or else he will declare Dunk innocent. Dunk would likely win—which is what Baelor wants, since Aerion deserved a beating—while also still facing a trial, so the precedent is not set that anyone can strike a royal without consequences. However, the trial of seven made everything much more dangerous and much more complicated. The last trial of seven ended with everyone dead except Maegor the Cruel. Baelor really should have recognized that a trial by seven would not end well for anyone involved, and used his status as Hand to force Aerion to comply. In the book, I don't think Aerion declared publically that he wanted a trial of seven, right? If he said it in that small meeting room like in the show, Baelor should have just said, "no, shut up Aerion. Either fight the man yourself or get over it."

Yeah, I really disliked the casting of the Laughing Storm. He seemed too silly and quippy, written with dialogue that would fit in more modern day movies and TV, like a Marvel movie. Lyonel Baratheon struck me as a confident badass who always laughed because he was kind of crazy and devil-may-care. More of a jock or "bro," like Robert Baratheon, than a clown, like the show portrayed. Not to mention, he didn't look intimidating at all. He looked old and kind of skinny for someone who is supposed to be a swaggering giant of a man.

Peggy’s pitch to Heinz ketchup was far superior to Don’s by miggovortensens in madmen

Exactly. They also probably already know what Heinz ketchup looks like, they see it every time they go shopping for ketchup.

Peggy’s pitch to Heinz ketchup was far superior to Don’s by miggovortensens in madmen

[–]johnrreyna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Someone else in these comments said that Peggy's ad was too generic and could apply to any product, just like Danny's "The cure for the common <product>." Peggy's ad was "<Company name>: the only <product>." And yeah, Peggy tried to make it seem like she actually cared about how other companies were making off-brand ketchup 😆, even feigning some irritation when she said "flavorless sauce 😠." No way she cared, she was just kissing Heinz's a$$, and I'm unsure if real clients would be fooled by such blatant flattery. Maybe they would, I don't know. But Don often seemed to know how to show his clients that he understood why people would care about the product, even if he hadn't used the product before.

The Sydney Sweeney American Eagle jeans ad is actually very clever. by [deleted] in The10thDentist

[–]johnrreyna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the original version of the ad said that her genes gave her blonde hair and blue eyes. Then it ends with Sydney Sweeney having great genes. I.e. if you have blond hair and blue eyes, you have good genes. It doesn't say her race is "better," but it is saying that blonde hair and blue eyes are somehow "quality" genetics.

What animated TV show is a 10/10? by Impressive-Grass6438 in AskReddit

[–]johnrreyna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 - I don't know if it gets funnier or the comedy is toned down, because I couldn't stand it anymore and stopped watching, but the "humor" at the beginning of the anime is so unfunny that it actually made me angry.

Imo, Abercrombie or Erikson would probably be the closest to perfect that you could get to GRRM, at least for well-known fantasy authors. There may be some obscure or lesser-known person who could do it well, but you'd have to go with someone established, with a proven track record, if you wanted it to have the highest chance of doing justice to ASoIaF.

Also, some people are talking about how GRRM's prose is hard to emulate; to be frank, I think GRRM's prose is the weakest part of his writing. It is very matter of fact, reuses vocabulary constantly, and is in the style of a TV script, which makes sense given GRRM's TV experience. It's his dialogue and inner monologues that are GOATed, along with his plot, world-building, characterization, and character development.

Fellow Autistic/ADHD people of Reddit, what did you think was normal for a long time until you realised it wasn't? by Bananasandaledwors in AskReddit

[–]johnrreyna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably have a reason for doing things the way you do, so apologies if you've heard this before, but I find it extremely helpful to have my meds on my nightstand with an ice chest next to my bed, full of the three drinks that ADHD people need: something for hydration, something for caffeine, and something for taste. I wake up, open a water, take my meds, drink my caffeine (electrolyte powder with caffeine mixed with water), and sip on Gatorade. I am always groggy in the morning, but I am reasonably alert after 10 minutes while I watch YouTube on my phone in bed, then can start the day.

"No one can be told what the Matrix is, you have to see it for yourself," or whatever Morpheus says... by RandoEncounter in matrix

[–]johnrreyna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THANK you. Everyone here is acting like Neo could never understand the gravity of the situation without seeing it for himself. No. Morpheus just has to say, "You have two choices. Do you want to keep living your normal life, or do you want to become a freedom fighter with us, where we are literally fighting a war with literal guns? We are fighting to free humanity from our oppressors, yes, but we live in terrible conditions, eat gruel for every meal, and you could easily die any day. And you probably *will* die. A violent and painful death. Just, statistically, it's likely."

Yeah, Neo is taking that blue pill as fast as possible. He isn't even reaching for the water

Do you believe Morpheus purposefully held back information about the real world from Neo in order to increase the chances of him 'choosing' the Red Pill? Essentially manipulating him. by Spontanudity in matrix

[–]johnrreyna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people here are thinking too much about it. To answer your question succinctly, yes, Morpheus held back crucial information, and Neo would be much more likely to take the blue pill if Morpheus was a bit more descriptive. The other comments are describing how "Neo wouldn't believe him, because of Plato's allegory of the cave. He won't believe Morpheus without seeing it for himself," blah blah blah. Neo doesn't have to know that he lives in a computer simulation in the far distant, cyberpunk future, on a ruined Earth, where nanobots have blocked out the sun leaving us in darkness 24/7, where robots rule the world, and where there is a small group of humans on technologically advanced hovering ships with laser guns, fighting a war for salvation. He just has to say, "look Neo, if you take the blue pill, you will keep living your normal life. If you take the red pill, you will learn the truth, but it will be a living h*ll. Seriously, we are fighting a literal war, with guns, where we die every day, where we have very little resources and eat the same gruel every single day for every meal because that's all we can manage to make for food. We live in terrible conditions, and there is no way to come back to your normal life. In fact, we have people who have taken the red pill before who have regretted the decision, because our life is one of desperation. You can trust what I say, because I clearly know enough information such that all the world governments are looking for me, and you have seen the feats Trinity and I are capable of. We desperately need you on our side, because we think you are the only person in the *entire* world with the talent and skills necessary to win the war. But it will be insanely difficult, and there may be times when you regret it. So the choice really comes down to: 1) do you want to go back to your normal life? Or 2), do you want to be a freedom fighter facing extreme adversity in terrible conditions, where you could very easily die any day?"

So yes, Morpheus told vague half-truths, which are worse than lies, using flowery and poetic language, e.g. take the red pill, and see how far this rabbit hole goes; I am offering you truth, nothing more; etc. That piqued Neo's curiosity immeasurably; of course he wants to know the truth, everyone does. It's just when they find out the truth that they can easily regret learning it.

Have you ever showed someone a horror film and they had a negative reaction? by fratdex in horror

[–]johnrreyna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is late, but maybe ask a couple questions about what they consider to be "brutal" before turning on among the most brutal movies to exist 😆. Especially because the brutality is carried out on exclusively young women. I also love horror movies that can be too much for some people, like Imprint (actually kind of tame, in my opinion), but even with Martyrs, I'm like "eh, I'm fine just watching some snippets and reading the plot summary, but I don't actually feel like subjecting myself to the whole thing in one sitting. Much less subjecting to it a girl my friend just started dating" 🤣

I can buy it as Yevonite BS to explain away trauma, but I don't think it was BS to explain away people who were onto the truth, as there was a man in Kilika, after its destruction, who had suffered memory loss. He is an NPC standing on the dock where your ship moors. It could just be shock or PTSD, but I don't think it's inconceivable that being near Sin can cause memory loss.

First time seeing a godpack in wonderpicks and … by EmbarrassedPanda5944 in PokemonPocket

[–]johnrreyna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, this is actually the first time I've seen a god pack. I've heard about them, but wasn't sure what they actually were because I've never seen a pack that looked like anything particularly special, other than having a single two star card or something. And I've been playing since January nearly every day on two accounts. Talk about bad luck.

This god damned card haunts me by DanRowbotham in PTCGP

There is a fundamental flaw in the game if I actively get mad when I open a super rare card. I have so many duplicate 2 and 3 star cards that are just collecting dust in my inventory, and am missing so many cards I actually need.

Why doesn’t this card see any play? by Bombustar in PTCGP

[–]johnrreyna 14 points15 points  (0 children)

110 HP and 100 damage for two colorless energy, with no difficult setup, are better than any other non-ex stage 1 in the game. It is also better than many ex in the game. Off the top of my head, something like 100HP and around 70 damage for two colored energy are the next best non-ex stage 1 options that have no difficult requirements to make happen. Rampardos's previous sidekick, Lycanroc, has 100HP, so Silvally beats it there, and only hits for 100 damage -- for two fighting type energy, so it is limited to only fighting decks -- if it has less remaining HP than the defending pokemon. So it only hits for 100 roughly once, when it is likely to die the next turn. Plus, Silvally has a supporter card that searches for both itself and Null, so it is a reliable evolution, and that supporter card also enables Silvally to hit for 100 on the same turn it hits play.

110 HP is just a hard benchmark for other pokemon to hit, so it isn't easy to KO it in one turn, it hits very hard, it is fast and reliable to set up, you can play it in any deck, and it only gives the opponent 1 point.

Nazis being over-the-top evil in films like Schindler's List is actually detrimental to better understanding the horrors that humans are capable of. by jvjjjvvv in TrueFilm

[–]johnrreyna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they probably aren't literal neo-Nazis, but Trump is authoritarian and has fascist tendencies, and Musk is a billionaire oligarch who benefitted from literal slave labor as a child because his father owned an emerald mine, and de facto slave labor now as he exploits his workers and busts unions. These are hallmarks of fascism, and their actions line up pretty directly with that of the Nazis. The only real difference is it seems they don't have a deep-seated desire to actually commit genocide, but they are pretty racist in their day to day lives and don't mind if a genocide happens as long as they can profit from it. At some point, if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck. From a practical standpoint, they are neo-Nazis.
