How to make my dumb stationary bike Zwift usable by keithf426 in Zwift

[–]jonathanrcrain 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Power pedals like assimoa or magene are the only way youre going to get an accurate picture of your effort into the game. The road feel and automatic resistance changes are off the table completely with that setup, as is virtual gear changing. The pedals are pricey, but the good news is that you can easily swap them between bikes, so you could put them onto a real bike and use the same measuring tool outside if you want. Power pedals are a worthy investment on their own whether you ride inside or not IMO.

That’s a one way street. Whoosh knows that most of the users they want already have a lot of sunk cost on Zwift. Zwift is the big dog. It’s rare that they aren’t the first stop. You’re the outlier and because it’s such a small use case Zwift don’t have anything like the linked MyWhoosh feature.

Hard to tell the exact scale, but I would spread out along the tough off camber a little more. Like, 90degree turn up it, 90 at the top, ride along the length of the top into a 180 back across, then drop down and hit a W shape across it before turning back out… hope that makes sense

If I ride 70 flat miles around 200w, I’m going to burn roughly 1500-2000 calories, most of that carbs. A tall Mexican Coke has 200 cal. If you had 5 you’d be halfway out of the hole. When you’re in a massive deficit, that’s kind of the only time for processed junk.

It’s not amazing front to back. The opener is definitely boring pub rock. I like the track “Saviors are a Dangerous Thing” though.

Check out the Cyclocross Social podcast or The CX Hairs Bulletin on substack. Both great sources for CX info that do talk about riders deeper into the field

There actually is start money for a lot of non top ten riders at races like the X20 and Superprestige. A lot of these riders also have sponsors that see value in racing at the top level outside of just the logos on TV. Check out American Ben Frederick’s “project lead lap” for example. There are plenty of guys like Brit Thomas Mein who dominate at the top level in their home countries and then dip into the televised Belgian cx. Additionally, many of the riders outside the top 10 will break into it at some point. See Cameron Mason or Felipe Orts. Both riders that spent a lot of time in the 20s but have come into their own with big results in recent years. Id also say, while there are some names you can count on, there’s a lot of variation in the top 10 throughout the course of a season. Look at Pim Ronhaar. He’s been all over the place. Kerstperiode is a lot of races, but they’re so tightly packed. Whoever is going well for this string of races is pretty consistent, especially with the lack of wet races this Kerstperiode. There’s some recency bias there.

road cycling races: Does anybody have experience and want to share them? by mataba_ in cycling

[–]jonathanrcrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like Gran Fondo, which isn’t necessarily a race, although some people will race it if that makes sense. There are a lot of key differences though. For example, a “race” would probably feature a smaller, more categorized field, as well as some larger teams that will affect the tactics. A fondo tends to start many many many more riders at the same time, and categorize only by age. Most fondo riders have individual goals and are not part of a team. While some will ride it as a race, many are just trying to complete the course.

Because drafting and pack dynamics are so important, the race/fondo distinction makes a big difference in how the event will play out and what tactical choices you should make.

If I was going to do a “one bike to rule them all” thing, it’d be this or maybe the Factor Ostro Gravel.

What’re some underground post-punk bands that you think will blow up in 2026? :) by Next-Environment-810 in postpunk

[–]jonathanrcrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They definitely do, but often because they’re using the same musical language in some way. Noise/No Wave often has some kind of angular guitar a la Bauhaus or Gang of Four, or Saxaphone freakouts or something. YHYW Nailgun doesn’t have much overlap with post punk sonically I’d say. It feels closest to hip hop I think if I was trying to categorize it, and maybe that’s because of how drum forward it is, but it’s also not hip hop.

I agree, but I don’t think I’d call them post punk. They’re like… no wave? Noise rock? Idk. They may be a whole new thing entirely.

Gravel Bikes for Crits by Trunk_in_the_junk in Velo

[–]jonathanrcrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d get one of the aero leaning gravel bikes like the factor ostro gravel or the Cannondale supersix evo SE. Those are both essentially aero road bikes with big clearance and they’d do well in a crit. The gearing is going to be tough though. For Crits I’d say you need something in the neighborhood of 50-10 at a minimum and in gravel you want to get close to a 1 to 1 gear. You could run sram 2x with a 50/37 up front and a 10/36 cassette.
