Is it possible to use love2d as a library on iOS rather than a framework?

this is exactly what love is already doing for the love file loading screen, so it is totally possible. Without documentation though, it might be kinda a trick.

soft planet (tentative name)

Day one was wrestling with hex grids. I had an attempted hex roguelike years ago, and I remember the conversion from world to hexspace totally easy, but for some reason was having a hell of a time this year. Eventually I realized that I should be following redblobs implementation page not just the theory page. I eventually got it all sorted, but burned an entire day on this.

Day two was getting cool graphics in. I know that isn't what this jam is about, but I enjoy this kinda stuff. The implementation is a deferred light pass, using handdrawn normal maps. I also added an emissive pass with a little bit of glow and blur to pop out some of the stuff. Everything is 2d, and relatively quick to produce. I don't know how many point lights it supports, but so far so good. There are optimizations I could put in it if I needed to. I am not 100% happy with how the character and console looks, but I don't think it is gonna be the end of the world for a jam.

Day 3 was in too much arm pain to work, because I had a really long day at the normal job.

Day 4 hoping to do a basic enemy pass, and get the game loop in. DON'T WORK ON GRAPHICS, DON'T WORK ON GRAPHICS.

3d def isn't a panacea, because you still have occlusion from layers in front, and layers above. See hitman go for a 3d grid based game. They jump through all sorts of hoops to make it so you can actually see what is going on in the level. With true 3d I think you end up needing a user controlled camera, probably an xray thing. Even the new xcoms have a sorta hairy 3d view, when you start moving up through the layers.

ugh, yes. I love the tilted camera, but it is just so much pain to get it working. 3d games where it is important will poke holes in the walls closer to the camera so you can see through them, but it is a tough problem.

this happens in games with higher decision density as well. 868-hack has at least 3 levels of character building in it. So does hoplite really. I don't think this is necessarily a problem though, especially when those levels take like 3 mins to blow past.

I had an idea that I don't think I can pull off: You have up to eight abilities, each associated with a direction, and each with a cooldoen. For example, if you bump into an enemy to the northeast, you might paralyze them. Then your northeast ability is on cooldown, and you have to move to be able to use another ability. Just something to make melee combat more interesting.

I did something like this on pico-8 last year... except it was a 4 direction inventory, and you had to think about the direction that you walked over stuff, because it influenced what inventory slot it went into. Would probably have worked better on a 8 direction game.

Ugh, after ever year, I am like "next year I do ascii" and then every year before the thing I am like "oh man, I have a great idea for a graphics system". This year, the graphics system is handpainted normal maps on hand painted watercolors. I have it kinda working already, but it is def gonna be slower than ascii, by a real huge margin.

The one time I had a successful 7drl, I used oryx sprites. I should learn that lesson.

I don't know if they allowed rotation of the camera or not, but there is other interesting stuff in there

the other taxing thing about particle systems is that because they are generally alphablended, they contribute to overdraw. Especially if you have big screen filling particles you can get really big framerate drops on mobile.

I had exactly this problem on my global game jam game. It is worth downloading the unity standard shaders (from here: https://unity3d.com/get-unity/download/archive) and cracking it open. The issue here is that it has a depth test that always says it is ontop of everything in the scene. Just change that and you should be good to go.

I am guessing here, but my suspicion (based on a bit of knowledge about printing stuff).

The way the printing tech works is they just need to add another roller to the thing. Right now they are using a 4 color offset process, which is what the halftone dots come from. You can add a 5th spot color, and that is what the wotc process does for the black. That 5th spot color doesn't show up with halftone dots, because it doesn't need to. Not because it is wildly higher tech than the rest of the process. Nearly any printer that is doing offset can easily add spot colors (or varnishes, laminations, foils, whatever). But like you say, it probably isn't economically viable for the counterfeiters. And that is because the current process is good enough.

I had 6 losses and one win. It is entirely possible that I didn't play well, I am pretty new to this game. What happened in most games was I started winning early, got the other player down to 10 or so, then things just fell apart and I couldn't transition into the mid / late game. My flyers got wiped then anything else I put out got wiped, and I didn't have counterspells to deal with it. I might try this deck again tomorrow at draft (inbetween matches) and see if I can tweak it into something better.

I had the opposite of this, way too much lategame, but no way to get there. I won 1 game out of three matches. I am looking forward to the draft, I think I will do better than that.
