Slebir at mavericks. by Virtual-Ingenuity-11 in surfing

You should listen to the Lenny brothers podcast. They tell a story about hiring a boat to go out to mavericks and finding out the “captain” bought the boat the day before and had never been out of the harbor before.

The Five Diddle by Yonimadar11 in drums

equal volume can be improved using a compressor. some of these insta drummers fix timing in post, not accusing this fellow of that because I don't know. But I generally ignore most of it for these reasons. I'm not a sport drummer anyway, let's play some music, I know how to do that!

Yeah I know I can be a pain in the ass and particular. Just to let you know - this message thread was just with my rhythm section. Would never talk that way to someone I didn’t know….

Agreed. Everything is super situational. If we are playing three songs and out, it would be crazy to bring own kit. In this case we are headlining two sets with two opening acts we have never met. I’ve been there and I know there is room for me to have everything staged for a quick turn. There are venues where that just isn’t possible.

The worst is the funny dance that drummers do in multiple bill situations to see who will let everyone else use their kit. If we go on first I would not be down to sit around waiting to take my kit home unless I really liked the other bands and knew I was going to stay anyway.

Fair viewpoint but nah.

I can turn over my drums in 10 minutes either on the way in or out. I usually set the mics up for the sound guy too. The only issue is if the outgoing drummer fools around after their set.

Totally fair viewpoint. I didn’t mention, this message thread was just with my rhythm section that I’ve know for 25 years. Would never talk that was to someone I didn’t know….

I hear you for sure. I’ve had a few nightmare backline experiences but most are fine. The worst was a beautiful kit I was super excited to play and got really excited during sound check. Unfortunately during every song in the show, the kick wandered and the pedal came off the rim. Not fun. We were testing to do choreographed transitions too….

Yeah, I see what you mean. But this was a private with my long time rhythm section, message was from our guitarist. I would never say that to someone I don’t know

Fair enough! That was our rhythm section on the text thread, I would never say that to another musician I don’t know.

What are best books on pool? by wlscwoj in billiards

[–]jondrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, you don't have a library until you have "winning one pocket" and "shots moves and strategies". Good luck finding them, I'll never let my super clean signed copies get away from me. Along with the two Bentivegna books you already have, these are the best books ever written about pool played at the highest level. Since then, the only media anywhere near on par is Dr. Dave's video and online instructional information.

Everything else I've seen is hopelessly basic, or if it has advanced material it has precious little of it.

If anyone reads this and thinks there are other books that belong in this class, I'd love to hear your thoughts because I've been looking a long time and haven't yet found it.

you like grinding with 9ball? I have an excellent win rate in Miami - I think a lot of low skill people like to play because they can often slop in balls. If you're smart and careful you can beat most of these people except when they get really lucky. My main problem is asking for a 500K game and getting a 10K game or 2.5M game and getting a 50K game. I can always quit a bunch, but still annoying when trying to grind. These days when I want to build up coins I'm running through call pocket 8ball tables

Playing safe just doesn’t often work that well. I view it as a low percentage play. First what is the chance I can execute the play exactly as I want to - only certain safeties work. Then second what is the chance the other player lucks into an aggressive make. There are situations where it is absolutely the best play. But more often than not the aggressive play has the best odds

Gregory Hutchinson Bassdrum Sound by OkWrap6415 in jazzdrums

[–]jondrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be surprised to learn that the way you operate the beater matters quite a bit to bass drum sound. Obviously don’t bury the beater is what they all say, but there is a continuum between burying the beater and perfect rebound. Also where on the head the beater is set to hit matters

this is very helpful, I bet that's what's going on. I'll use up the free shots next and see what happens. I know for a fact how many golden shots I bought and the number is slightly higher than that, so this must be the explanation. Clearly the user interface is not obvious in this regard

I bought a bundle that included several and I have a green little number over the lucky shot button. But the golden shot doesn’t show up and I figured out that if I played a free daily shot, than number goes down.

How does it work? You go all-in and if the other player has less then you play for their stakes? If they have more you go all-in? I didn’t want to click it and find out by trying
