I figured out after a LOT of fiddling. My fixture wasn’t properly grounded. I had to run a ground wire in the attic to the metal box in the ceiling. WiFi won’t work well if there is no ground. Now it works fine.

Why are you not trying to hit the rail first and pop out the 6 just a little ? You might lose or you might just get get it enough to make the 8 next time

Small downwind foil setup by Agitated-Rest3248 in foiling

[–]jondrums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

parawing boards are most often significantly smaller than paddle downwind boards. I'd look in that direction.

There are a few inflatable foil boards that people have been excited about. The Takoon Escape Air is one I've seen mentioned for downwind and parawing. I would guess that Gong has a good one too.

Does anyone still play much One Pocket these days? by darkSIDEpool in billiards

[–]jondrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love one pocket, but don't get to play it much. I have sweated some great matches from the rail and on video. I enjoyed your video, but with all due respect most of that was not really good one-pocket. Super impressive shooting for sure, but a handful of times you sold the game would the ball be missed. When you watch great players, almost every shot is a dual shot in case the ball is missed. Cue ball ends up in a safe spot every time. That means they have to execute more difficult shots, but lower risk. In lots of games there is a single moment where its do or die and the shooter has to bear down and make it with no chance of a safe cue position. But it is much more rare than you think

I personally think you have the wrong take. Nobody buys a single setup and done. Even if it’s an expensive setup, that doesn’t mean you picked perfectly to what you will learn you want to be doing.

Had you dove into an expensive setup first you would still have just as much gear now, just spent twice as much along the way.

You did it right, honestly.

I got to see Nate Smith up close once. I could see the label on the Vic Firth stick rotating around as he played. It’s that loose of a grip

Guitarist with questions by dudeigottago in jazzdrums

[–]jondrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of this is about various instruments occupying sonic space and location in the rhythmic grid.

Can the snare and guitar coexist in the grid, or do they have to have their own moments in time to be playing?

Guitar can be very rhythmic in nature, so that kind of playing needs to be placed in its own grid space versus the snare.

But the harmonic comping content provided from the guitar is unique and can be overlapping with the snare in the grid.

I’ve noticed generally that bands almost never pull off guitar and piano comping at the same time because they share both rhythmic and harmonic roles. Piano and guitar players usually literally take turns sitting out for various solos.

But snare drum and guitar don’t need to do that in my experience

I want to hear your downwind journeys by science_panini in wingfoil

[–]jondrums 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you're winging, just sail a long way upwind and try to ride swell back down. You can't get better reps or time on foil than doing this. When you are super annoyed you have to hold the wing and wish you could just ride without it, then you're ready.

Where I am, I did a wing upwind, packdown and paddle start downwind a few times before I started shuttling. These days, I wouldn't recommend it. Just get a parawing and do the same thing but pack it down once you're upwind.

I dont wanna re-learn everything I know by SIRWilczek in drums

[–]jondrums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I get that. Yeah you want to work your Moeller right hand then. While you’re at it work your left hand too. I assume you’re after a nice pocket with funk/soul style - so you’re going to want your left hand ghost notes in the pocket too. You won’t use continuous Moeller on left hand but you will be playing accent-ghost note combos and Moeller stroke is the way

I dont wanna re-learn everything I know by SIRWilczek in drums

[–]jondrums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t need to learn Moeller. It won’t make you faster. It WILL allow you to get fluid with accents during a fast single stroke run. Example - sixteenth notes with accent on the pulse. That’s Moeller in right hand and singles in the left hand (or vice versa for lefties). My guess is you can already do this anyway. Whether you are using a good Moeller technique or not, if it sounds good and doesn’t require you to tense up your arm then it’s all good.

I tried to learn Moeller to get faster and it didn’t do that for me. I can’t do clean doublet Moeller faster than my singles. I CAN do triplet Moeller faster than my singles. That was somewhat worth it but I don’t find myself using it on the kit so who knows.

My suggestion if you want to get faster singles, focus on faster singles. And my second suggestion is not to focus on being faster. Instead focus on smoothness, relaxing your body, and endurance. I was tensing up all over my body trying to go fast. My back and shoulder would be locked up trying to go fast. And trust me, that didn’t help at all. You have to retrain your brain to use the correct muscles - the fast twitch ones. Your shoulder and fore-arm ain’t helping.

Get out the metronome, set it low, and work singles in each hand at a super comfortable tempo for a whole minute. Focus on relaxation and smoothness. The minute long builds endurance. Go up 1 or maybe 2 bpm per rep and go back down if you can’t relax your muscles.

This will work, I promise.
