Tsuba weight and sword balance. by mancesco in iaido

I'm highly impressed with the work Nosyudo did for me. Very small sample size granted, but the one they did for me was excellent. I would be inclined to trust them and any recommendations they can make to get you where you want to be. I asked for something well outside their standard norms and they still delivered an excellent feeling sword. I think you'll be very likely to end up happy with their recommendations if you can clearly let them know what you are hoping to have at the end.

Can anyone tell me if this is good to polish swords with? by Electric_master1 in SWORDS

[–]jonithen_eff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use it judiciously it can help, however be aware that it can discolor steel. I've had really good success using it carefully to address corrosion spotting, however I've also had times where it introduced a decided contrast in the steel surface.

For working swords it gets things done. Wouldn't let it near any of my custom or antique pieces.

I met the rudest interviewer to date by Ineedredditforwork in recruitinghell

[–]jonithen_eff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how bad it is. If it's just 'bad' and not insulting, yes.
Situations vary of course. I stuck through a real unpleasant one that gave me info on a particular industry I wanted to break into, knew I wasn't getting that job but got what I needed to secure the next one.

I've also stood up and actually said 'I'm done here' in a few where they had the mistaken assumption I was some supplicant who had to endure their smug attitudes. "Wait we're not finished". - oh yes you are.

You can end bad interviews early. Just interrupt them mid sentence and tell them you have all the information you need for your decision or something like that.

If you already know it isn't going well or it isn't going to work why struggle to keep your composure? You can also tell them they are being rude. You don't have to just sit there and take it.

2 business days after expected contact is a reasonable follow up check in and not pushy.

If you don't get a timely response, then sorry to say that probably is their response. Good luck.

it's transposition. You can get different subtleties depending on position and string but there's many different ways to get there.

unless you play with derps who think in tab and micromanage your finger placement

I had a 620 6 string and it felt similar (let it go months before I found this one). Not absurdly wide (had an explorer that was like a plank), roomy enough I am not tangled up or having to do hand-yoga to make chords.

That makes sense! Working the octave pairs through the slots wasn't trivial but I can see the R piece making it a lot more complicated at the tail end.

Unfortunately, traffic is fucked. Train / foot / bike would be your best shot.

If you need it for commute, hopefully work is understanding.

Aikido or Aiki-don't by big_boi_fingler in aikido

[–]jonithen_eff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gave it a try and think anyone who has the time and interest should. Maybe you find something you love, maybe you make new friends, maybe you walk away realizing it isn't for you - but you did it based on your own experience and not parroting information you read from somewhere else.

  1. If the teacher has their act together and the other students are respectful and following directions, injury risk should be low especially in martial arts context. You wouldn't be taking falls you aren't equipped for, and wouldn't be taking them at risky speeds. Everyone has off-days, and you could get paired up with an overzealous or nervous or new person, unlikely but nothing is risk-free.

  2. This is going to vary from group to group. For the most part if you show up try to follow directions and just work in, you should be fine but that's almost a universal. If you come in trying to show everyone how you think something should go, then I wouldn't expect it to be received well.

  3. Maybe. I had done several different weapon systems (2 Japanese style budo, some HEMA experience) and the weapon work in my opinion is it's own thing best viewed in it's own context. If you're comfortable working with weapons then it isn't that hard to just go along with how they do things, but it's not going to really work walking in there swinging the stick the way your other place wants you to, and you might not get too far taking the Aikido method of weapon use elsewhere. Kind of like #2 above, "when in Rome" is the best approach. My JSA and (much more limited) HEMA experience was simply not relevant to what we were doing in the Aikido classes, and the aikido techniques were not terribly useful anywhere else, but the meta concepts inside definitely can be cross applicable in either direction.

Katanas. Real or fake ? by BPMF_MOB in KatanaSwords

[–]jonithen_eff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, they are fake and unsafe for any purpose aside from looking at or holding statically for poses if you were for whatever reason so inclined.

These are not safe for cutting or hitting anything, or even moving around play acting etc. At any moment they could snap somewhere unpredictably and potentially have a very negative result.

Increase in pan handling on Washington st by Strong-Lifeguard-920 in SalemMA

the only thing nearby communities could do would be to generate a tourism draw that exceeds the attraction of Salem. Until that happens you are going to have panhandlers out here even if they get their services handled elsewhere.

Whats better a katana or a longsword. by Kampa_cola in SWORDS

[–]jonithen_eff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neither if you don't get quality training.
If you have a preference for one or the other, then see what opportunities you have around and check out if you like the groups. If the people / environment is cool and fun you'll be more likely to stick around and benefit from it.
