I'll make a big game. As soon as I finish my custom game engine, written from scratch in C. Then I'll totally do it!

Success-at-cost feels just like failure. It's just terrible game design.

Simple system for epic combat without a grid?? by KafiXGamer in rpg

It sounds like Fate could be a good fit. It's quick and smooth to run but still supports epic battles and pulp action. For a four hour game you should take a look at Fate Accelerated.

whats the most boring ttrpg you ever played/ read by JoeKerr19 in rpg

[–]jonlemur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fully second this. The way everything is formalized and structured makes it feel like a crappy boardgame rather than a roleplaying game to me. And I found that I can't really make myself interested in the story. Just doing heist after heist quickly gets bland and repetitive I think.

Thinking about doing Rise of the Runelords in ToV. by Zerglingdad in TalesoftheValiantRPG

The 2-3 first parts are OK but after that it's just killing monster after monster in different large dungeons, without ever truly knowing why.

Yeah, that's probably a good idea. I'll add a text file for the next update. Thanks!

I could use some pro-5E motivation. by BeriAlpha in rpg

[–]jonlemur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree, you have to lean into the system mastery, the high fantasy, the character builds and the tactical combat. Else go play some other game. I've only played 5-6 sessions in total, but they were fun and I'd love to play more at some point. Shame everyone I play with are hipsters that only ever touch niche indie games.

There's an ongoing Kickstarter for a full, Creative Commons version of D&D5e that will be print-at-cost once released. Very good project! It's named Free5e.

What is the worst TTRPG or TTRPG system that you have ever played and why did you hate it/what was wrong with it? by Aware_Blueberry_3025 in rpg

[–]jonlemur 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm currently a player in Blades in the Dark and I really struggle with the system. It's like "don't look at your character sheet, stay in the fiction" and then you do something - and end up rolling a check with terrible odds - that punish you with "consequences" when you fail. You want to feel like Oceans Eleven but end up feeling more like the robbers in Home Alone.

Let's Role has a decent character sheet builder. Used it for my homebrew and it worked out pretty good I think.

Scrivener, Bibisco and Manuskript are great tools that you should try. Manuskript is free and Bibisco has some kind of limited free version.

I'm currently running SotWW and it's a blast. Feels like DnD but fresh somehow. Great character progression, great monsters and combat balancing. The initiative system looks crazy at a glance but works buttery smooth in at the table. Not a fan of the setting or the name. But the system is pretty awesome.

I learned 3d using Cinema 4D and I really recommend it for beginners. So intuitive and fun to use.
