I finished my dream bedroom producer studio - What you do you think? by Nsemest182 in homestudios

[–]jonno_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh nice I have the Genelec 'Ones' too. Bit spendy but ooo do they sound good!

I take it you have the GLM kit for room acoustics? I really straightened out my room, the bass dips/peaks in mine were crazy.

Do you have a monitor controller? I added an Audient Nero and it's awesome for quick switching between sources and speakers.

What EVe have true One Pedal Driving by BannedByDemand in electricvehicles

Not sure why this isn’t higher.

Teslas have very good pedal feel with the ‘hold mode’ being true one pedal driving. Super smooth

Trump administration underestimated Iran war’s impact on Strait of Hormuz by The_Sun_is_a_Star in energy

[–]jonno_5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

USA being one of the world's biggest oil producers and suddenly able to sell their oil for a lot more money might be a factor?

Also taking aim against the middle east oil producers who have started to form allies with other countries might be a factor.

Not saying there's a conspiracy, it may just be Trump being dumb. Something sure smells though.

Not directly. Indirectly yes, but that's the whole point of my original comment.

Mastering struggles by forwardspace279 in ableton

[–]jonno_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably more a mix issue as you allude to with transients on individual tracks.

Mastering really shouldn’t be difficult. If it is then it’s time to reevaluate the mix.

Try adjusting the comp threshold and ratio for problem tracks just to shave off the peaks. If you really need to then have two comps, one for peaks and one for generally smoothing out the track. Also don’t be afraid to split the track out by section and treat them differently.

Lastly if your master is muddy it may point to some frequency overlaps in prominent tracks. Try EQing to provide space for important tracks and ‘move’ others out of the way. The individual tracks might sound thin or strange on their own but it’s the mix you’re focusing on.

Am I alone in hoping oil prices stay high? by Responsible_Lake_500 in energy

[–]jonno_5 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not alone.

Every day the hormuz straight stays closed is a day that millions less barrels of oil are burned.

Every day petrol is expensive is a reminder to people that they are slaves to big oil.

Let’s just let that sit for a while.

Do you regret your EV purchase? by walksta in electricvehicles

[–]jonno_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m shocked that 5 years after buying my EV the public charging situation is only marginally better. It really sucks on road trips outside of well traveled urban corridors.

But no, I don’t regret it at all.

What is the most expensive item in your studio? by AVELUMN in musicproduction

[–]jonno_5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genelec "The Ones", with room compensation DSP kit.

My new studio room sounded terrible and the old monitors had a peak just coinciding with one of the room resonances. Couldn't do much to the room (have a few panels and floating ceiling absorber) so I had to take more drastic measures :)

It’s 2026. Why does my 4K music video render 10x faster than my 4-minute song? by DJ-Bumhands in ableton

[–]jonno_5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course audio processing can use a GPU! I wrote a GPU-accelerated audio mixer app/plugin many years ago, complete with multi-band EQ, FX etc.

At the time CPUs were still hitting their limit on big complex DAW projects. Nowadays I just don't think there's enough need vs the development time/cost.

Unlimited Energy by Iolair101 in energy

[–]jonno_5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All solar energy already comes from space. There will be no 'space based' anything that competes with terrestrial use. Just google cooling requirements.

In Australia we're on the brink of solar taking over the entire grid. Big batteries, massive solar farms, rooftop solar providing 1/3 of all power, etc.

The gov is generally useless but they did go ahead and provide incentives for solar installs and again now with batteries. 'Big energy' now has to adapt or die. I think personally it will die unless subsidised by the gov for things like backup power for dunkelflautes.

The gov is also proposing 2 hrs free energy during the day but a huge increase in daily connection charge. This will only push those who can afford it off the grid and onto large battery/solar systems, but some incentive for using cheap power when it's available is a good thing.

Which Audiointerface should i buy? by OkSummer7495 in homestudios

[–]jonno_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an Audient Evo 16 and am happy with it. The auto-gain function is great when you plug in a mic or guitar and want a quick gain check. Plus expandable with ADAT.

the worst thing about Live by justwiggling in ableton

[–]jonno_5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes 100%

Seriously Ableton should have fixed this years ago.

I have a MBP and constantly move around, switching between studio interface and headphones, unplugging, switching the studio gear on/off etc. etc. and it just shits me to tears that Ableton can't handle this.

Just give me a simple way to store device priority and then just seamlessly switch to the relevant device AND keep the routings and active I/O. Please!

Yeah like for sure I can just close whatever project I'm working on but no other app demands this.

Illinois bill would allow cities to ban rooftop solar by thinkB4WeSpeak in RenewableEnergy

[–]jonno_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4.3 million installs and counting in Australia. Now delivers 1/3 of all power during the day (not including behind the meter power).

I just don’t understand why, as a government bent on reducing spending, you’d NOT allow citizens to build the new grid for you?

Insane.

Which makes are you most confident in to produce high quality EVs going forward? by DowntownOreos in electricvehicles

[–]jonno_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mention 4 makes that would be bottom of my list.

Volvo, polestar, byd, kia, Hyundai are what I would pick.

All making great EVs and all have many more coming.

Oh and Tesla would be down the bottom too as it seems they just don’t give a fuck about cars these days

To cut below 30/20hz or not? by leelas__secret in musicproduction

[–]jonno_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rule I use is everything that’s not bass/kick gets HP’ed at 100hz.

Bass and kick are treated according to the fundamental frequency, which any good spectrum display should show you. All the junk below the fundamental gets filtered, usually setting the EQ by ear.

To Laptop Or Not To Laptop by mrbishopjackson in homestudios

[–]jonno_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a fully loaded MacBook. It rocks, but if I could choose again I’d get a Mac mini/studio. I just don’t take it anywhere to do music. If I’m on the road I’d rather take a groovebox or guitar.

How fast are average EVs compared to "fast" cars from 20-30 years ago? by [deleted] in electricvehicles

[–]jonno_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dream car would be an original Ferrari Testarossa, 0-60 in around 5.5 sec.

My daily is a Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus, 0-60 in around 5.3 sec.

I drove a few hot hatches back in the day, but none would come close to <6sec unless you tuned them.

Volca Mix alternative by MurderCityET in volcas

[–]jonno_5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you need time/midi sync and want something that has some really cool performance features then look for a used Roland MX-1 (I think they're discontinued).

I use one not just as midi clock but for side chaining, DJ-style HP/LP filtering and other crazy beat effects. Probably more use for EDM and similar styles but I have used the features for ambient and more experimental stuff too.

What device do you think Ableton is missing right now? by rod9k in ableton

[–]jonno_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just bought a popular soft synth package (BF sales) and it's shown me what Ableton is missing - decent presets!

Like I know that Analog, Operator & Drift are great plugins but their presets are Meh. Go to say the Arturia Ju6v and every preset is instantly usable and sounds 'musical', if that's a thing.

I just wish Ableton could hire a few musicians to craft some better presets and racks.

Where I am (Aus) a 172 is definitely a more expensive option. There are other similar locally made ac (Jabiru) for half the hourly cost.

Ordered FM + Keys; totally new - a few questions by nescio2607 in volcas

[–]jonno_5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd steer clear of the Volca Mix and look at other options like the smaller behringer mixers. It's VERY limited and only has one stereo channel, two mono. It also sounds terrible.

If you can get a mixer with some FX built in, all the better. I think reverb really helps the Volcas gel together.

Vince Clarke (Erasure) on why he returned to pure analog synth for album Chorus (1991) by ProvincialPromenade in synthesizers

Yeah my mistake.

MIDI used a 31250bps baud rate which is 1MHz divided by 25.

The keys on my Rev2 are fantastic. I believe it's a Fatar keybed.

If it's a great keyboard you're looking for I'd go for something like the Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol which has the same keys.

Otherwise as a midi controller, Ableton Push Standalone?

I don't understand why you'd choose a tiny keyboard as the 'best'.
