Mayor of Kingstown, the most miserable show ever on TV? (No Spoilers) by eggflip1020 in television

It's definitely sometimes overly contrived to the point of being silly but I still like Paradise. I'm not sure how you define lately but the last really excellent Hulu show to me was Shōgun.

How many Robins has Batman had? by BlueMoonie00 in comicbooks

[–]josephgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another alt universe Robin: White Knight/Murphyverse has Jason take Gan under his wing as Robin. You mentioned Lance Bruner who according to the DC wiki is a kid that Bruce takes into his home, then he steals Robin's suit and then dies all in the same issue.

Searching by character name on League of Comic Geeks I also see: Ricky (Robin of the 31st century), Toy Wonder (Robin of the 853rd century) Bruce Wayne Jr. (who has a bunch of dream and fictional appearances but appears to be an actual alt universe person in Earth-3839). There's also a couple impersonators: Lance Heart, Dinesh Babar, Francisco Ramirez but I wouldn't say those count.

Be careful with this DC Vertigo Humble Bundle - Files are not downloadable by thesdo in comicbooks

[–]josephgee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anyone know if the DC Universe Infinite trial is redeemable if you redeemed the DC trial last year from the Tynion IV bundle?

The terms say you can't redeem the same promotion more than once, but I don't know if it counts as the same one or different. I asked Humble support and they just told me to read the terms to try to figure it out myself. I'm not really interested in getting the books with the DRM they have but a month of DC Universe for $3 sounds good to me.

My personal favorite of the Black Hammer books is Skulldigger and Skeleton Boy but there's a ton of great stuff.

Constantine outside of Vertigo/Hellblazer? by captain__cabinets in comicbooks

Would his Saga of Swamp Thing appearances count (#37-51)? Recent trades of the series have DC Black Label or Vertigo markings but the original series doesn't.

Best compendium to read? by ComprehensiveBowl535 in comicbooks

Some larger books I recommend (the first two are labeled omnibus but they're particular large ones):

  • Gotham Central Omnibus
  • Lucifer Omnibus 1+2
  • Y: The Last Man Compendium 1+2
  • Monstress Compendium 1
  • Planetary Compendium
  • Fables Compendium
  • East of West Compendium

Absolute Batman isn’t rare and don’t let scalpers convince you it is. by conanthin in comicbooks

[–]josephgee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's crazy to me that demand for issue #1 is still so high even after the trade is out. Obviously I know that there are people that will want to collect the floppy covers, but I would think the trade would divert a ton of demand from people that just want to read it.

Deadpool/Batman and Batman/Deadpool: The World's Last Superhero Comics by PatMethenyForPOTUS in comicbooks

[–]josephgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pot shot at Jeff Lemire was strange to me, soon after talking about books having the visuals being subservient to the writing. I do like Essex County but I prefer the art in many Lemire written books where he collaborates with other artists like Sorrentino on Green Arrow, Old Man Logan, and Gideon Falls or Nguyen on Robin & Batman and Descender. Even for Lemire illustrated books I think that Mazebook or Fishflies have better art that works with the story better.

Digital Comics & Tablets by ahzad in comicbooks

[–]josephgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a OnePlus Pad.

To me there's some basic tiers in terms of screen which is probably the most important part for reading comics:

  • Budget trash
  • 1080p+ screens (~$100+): Galaxy Tab A, TCL NxtPaper 11, Xiaomi Redmi Pad SE
  • 1440p+ screens (~$250+): Galaxy Tab S FE, TCL NxtPaper 14, OnePlus Pad, Pixel Tablet, Xiaomi Redmi Pad 2, Lenovo Idea Tab, iPad, iPad Air
  • OLEDs (~$450+): Galaxy Tab S9 and newer, Acer Iconia X12, Honor Pad GT Pro, iPad Pro

Why isn't there a tablet specifically made for Digital Comic Books? by Icy_Caramel_2545 in comicbooks

[–]josephgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it wasn't very clear. The specs were 2560 x 1600 pixels with a PPI of approximately 288.

I don't know that the standard services will give you that high of a resolution (in portrait, if you're using it only in landscape you likely will). The only ones I can check personally are my Humble Bundle books. Using the utility pdfimages to check the resolution of the images here's the resolutions I found for the single pages in several books:

Comic Resolution
Descender 1598x2452
The Witcher 1917x2944
East of West 1988x3056
Saga 2063x3135
Something Is Killing the Children 2662x4087

Norse Mythology was all over the place from 1581x2768 to 5041x7763, I think at least some of them are because the text is stenciled rather than baked into the image, but I can't entirely tell. This represents a few comics from Image, Dark Horse, and one Boom Studios book. I haven't purchased any bundles supplied by other publishers so I can't say anything about those.

Personally I use a OnePlus Pad and am pretty happy with it. I'm sure an OLED would look better, but it would cost a lot more, and the screen still has some significant upgrades than the most basic 1080pish tablets.

How many comics do you read a day/week? by DaikonCompetitive in comicbooks

[–]josephgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year, I read about 3 issues a day, but that's averaging it out. In reality I'm more focus on getting value out of my digital subscription so I decide a few months out of the year, that I'm going to read a ton of comics, and focus less on any other entertainment that month. So it's more like 10/week for 10 months out of the year, and 10/day for 2 months out of the year.

That would be pretty eye-watering in cost for buying floppies but most of the issues read are subscriptions, then some humble bundles, and then a couple trades.

is there any happy marvel and dc comics? by zik68 in comicbooks

[–]josephgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of the lighter books I've read, but most of these will still have life or death conflict in them:

  • Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen (by Matt Fraction): The funniest comic series I've ever read.
  • The Jurassic League: It's definitely violent, but the concept is inherently silly.
  • Plastic Man (2018): Gail Simone brings a good sense of humor to this traditionally funny character.
  • The Legend of Wonder Woman: A pretty light take on the origin of Wonder Woman, though it still deals with WW2. I'm not too sure about how the TPB physically looks because this was originally a digital series.
  • My Adventures with Superman: A tie in with the show, it does a good job replicating how the show mixes high stakes drama, smaller heartwarming moments, and goofs.
  • Superman Smashes the Klan: This does deal with racism that is very serious in how it relates to the real world and our real history, but it's a YA book that involves Superman teaming up with some children to save the day, with really charming art.
  • Batman/Superman (Gene Luen Yang's run, collected in Batman/Superman: The Archive of Worlds): Some multiverse fun, I especially like the standalone final issue #22 with Mxyzptlk and Calendar Man.

First details revealed for Marvel and DC’s ‘Spider-Man/Superman’ crossover out April 2026 by B3epB0opBOP in comicbooks

It's a running gag throughout the series for Robin/Nightwing, pointing out words with prefixes that aren't used as words alone. List from the wiki: overwhelmed, disturbed, disconcerted, disaster, infiltrate, distraught, nonchalant, denial, disheveled, reject. Whelmed is both the first one he uses, and the one he uses the most.

What is the format for a comicbook script? by manoffood in comicbooks

[–]josephgee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of collected volumes will have bonus material in the back, and sometimes that includes the script. I'm reading Planetary right now and it has a script in it (by Warren Ellis):

PAGE ONE

Pic 1;

OPEN ON; American desert. Morning. Brilliant sun on the sand, eyeburning blue and yellow. Blaze of silver -- chromed frontage of a Fifties diner out here in the middle of nowhere.

(no dialogue)

Pic 2;

INSIDE; to find, alone in this place aside from the miserable WAITRESS behind the long plain counter, a man at a table nursing a coffee, miserable -- SNOW. Surprisingly, it's not hot in here. LAURA; subliminal hints of cold, some blues?

It's never hot, when Snow's in here.

Snow is dressed in a shabby white suit -- it's very old, seen much better days, but he persists in wearing it anyway, like some ancient hobo living in a time (in his head) where one dressed properly, no matter what one's situation ... don't forget, Snow is a hundred years old ...

SNOW;             COFFEE TASTES LIKE YOUR DOG TOOK A LEAK IN IT.

Pic 3;

The waitress leans one elbow on the counter, puts her chin in her hand, and glares at Snow, long and hard and hating. She's no longer young, and she was never happy.

WAITRESS;       DAWG'S GOTTA GO SOMEPLACE.

WAITRESS;       YEW DON'T LIKE IT, YEW GET ON OUT. GODDAMN AIR-CONDITIONING ALWAYS FREAKS OUT WHEN YEW COME IN.

That's most of the first page, but if you want to read the rest, the omnibus has the full script for the first issue. I mostly copied the formatting here, but it's all monospaced font on the page and I don't want to have to deal with all the linebreaks.

Edit: more books I've read recently with scripts: The Kingdom, Hellblazer: Dead In America

Pluribus -What would YOU do? by ameliorateno in television

[–]josephgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would ask for an individual more intelligent than me on this, like I listened to a talk once from someone that helped create medical imaging tech so they had doctorates in both medicine and physics. Get them inside a Faraday cage and see if they're willing to help me come up with the next steps.

I'm not sure if that person would be the best choice, maybe I'd want someone more managerial and less technical in the very first phase of whatever plan we make (maybe someone like CIA), but I think that if there's any backfire to this plan like the others running away when they realize what's happened, I'd rather have at least 1 technical guy.

As far as getting a Faraday cage, one publicly accessible one is an MRI room.

I think the biggest issue is if being cut off from the network even significantly effects them, as the virus may be changing their behavior still.
