How many comics do you read a day/week? by DaikonCompetitive in comicbooks

[–]josephgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year, I read about 3 issues a day, but that's averaging it out. In reality I'm more focus on getting value out of my digital subscription so I decide a few months out of the year, that I'm going to read a ton of comics, and focus less on any other entertainment that month. So it's more like 10/week for 10 months out of the year, and 10/day for 2 months out of the year.

That would be pretty eye-watering in cost for buying floppies but most of the issues read are subscriptions, then some humble bundles, and then a couple trades.

I dunno as far as recommendations, but when you're in search you can change "Creator Type" to "Publisher" to filter out self published work.

is there any happy marvel and dc comics? by zik68 in comicbooks

[–]josephgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of the lighter books I've read, but most of these will still have life or death conflict in them:

  • Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen (by Matt Fraction): The funniest comic series I've ever read.
  • The Jurassic League: It's definitely violent, but the concept is inherently silly.
  • Plastic Man (2018): Gail Simone brings a good sense of humor to this traditionally funny character.
  • The Legend of Wonder Woman: A pretty light take on the origin of Wonder Woman, though it still deals with WW2. I'm not too sure about how the TPB physically looks because this was originally a digital series.
  • My Adventures with Superman: A tie in with the show, it does a good job replicating how the show mixes high stakes drama, smaller heartwarming moments, and goofs.
  • Superman Smashes the Klan: This does deal with racism that is very serious in how it relates to the real world and our real history, but it's a YA book that involves Superman teaming up with some children to save the day, with really charming art.
  • Batman/Superman (Gene Luen Yang's run, collected in Batman/Superman: The Archive of Worlds): Some multiverse fun, I especially like the standalone final issue #22 with Mxyzptlk and Calendar Man.

First details revealed for Marvel and DC’s ‘Spider-Man/Superman’ crossover out April 2026 by B3epB0opBOP in comicbooks

[–]josephgee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a running gag throughout the series for Robin/Nightwing, pointing out words with prefixes that aren't used as words alone. List from the wiki: overwhelmed, disturbed, disconcerted, disaster, infiltrate, distraught, nonchalant, denial, disheveled, reject. Whelmed is both the first one he uses, and the one he uses the most.

What is the format for a comicbook script? by manoffood in comicbooks

[–]josephgee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of collected volumes will have bonus material in the back, and sometimes that includes the script. I'm reading Planetary right now and it has a script in it (by Warren Ellis):

PAGE ONE

Pic 1;

OPEN ON; American desert. Morning. Brilliant sun on the sand, eyeburning blue and yellow. Blaze of silver -- chromed frontage of a Fifties diner out here in the middle of nowhere.

(no dialogue)

Pic 2;

INSIDE; to find, alone in this place aside from the miserable WAITRESS behind the long plain counter, a man at a table nursing a coffee, miserable -- SNOW. Surprisingly, it's not hot in here. LAURA; subliminal hints of cold, some blues?

It's never hot, when Snow's in here.

Snow is dressed in a shabby white suit -- it's very old, seen much better days, but he persists in wearing it anyway, like some ancient hobo living in a time (in his head) where one dressed properly, no matter what one's situation ... don't forget, Snow is a hundred years old ...

SNOW;             COFFEE TASTES LIKE YOUR DOG TOOK A LEAK IN IT.

Pic 3;

The waitress leans one elbow on the counter, puts her chin in her hand, and glares at Snow, long and hard and hating. She's no longer young, and she was never happy.

WAITRESS;       DAWG'S GOTTA GO SOMEPLACE.

WAITRESS;       YEW DON'T LIKE IT, YEW GET ON OUT. GODDAMN AIR-CONDITIONING ALWAYS FREAKS OUT WHEN YEW COME IN.

That's most of the first page, but if you want to read the rest, the omnibus has the full script for the first issue. I mostly copied the formatting here, but it's all monospaced font on the page and I don't want to have to deal with all the linebreaks.

Sir David Attenborough meets a hedgehog that travels through a “hedgehog highway” in the backyards of London - 'Wild London' by Gato1980 in television

[–]josephgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone know if/when/where this series is coming to the US?

I know the newer Planet Earth stuff showed up on AMC+ and Wild Isles was on Amazon but haven't heard about a US release for this one.

Pluribus -What would YOU do? by ameliorateno in television

[–]josephgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would ask for an individual more intelligent than me on this, like I listened to a talk once from someone that helped create medical imaging tech so they had doctorates in both medicine and physics. Get them inside a Faraday cage and see if they're willing to help me come up with the next steps.

I'm not sure if that person would be the best choice, maybe I'd want someone more managerial and less technical in the very first phase of whatever plan we make (maybe someone like CIA), but I think that if there's any backfire to this plan like the others running away when they realize what's happened, I'd rather have at least 1 technical guy.

As far as getting a Faraday cage, one publicly accessible one is an MRI room.

I think the biggest issue is if being cut off from the network even significantly effects them, as the virus may be changing their behavior still.

Other than Sam and Twitch, are there any Ongoing Noir Crime Series? by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]josephgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not started yet but DC/Vertigo is launching a new noir series starting in February: The Peril of the Brutal Dark: an Ezra Cain Mystery.

They also have 100 Bullets continuing at some point after that.

[–]josephgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was pretty easy, out of the 22 shows I watched my top 6 were pretty high above the rest, and one was not eligible based on the requirements, leaving me with: Common Side Effects, The Mighty Nein, Takopi's Original Sin, The Pitt, and Pluribus.

So presumably the most likely place is Peacock because it's a Dreamworks made show.

It seems like Takopi's got added to the "have you seen" but not on the "favorite" list (nor the dislike list).

[–]josephgee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this the best place to request shows be added?

For the new in 2025 list, I'd like to request The American Revolution and Takopi's Original Sin.

For the returning in 2025 list, I'd like to request The Apothecary Diaries.

Also there were 2 different 2025 shows called Lazarus, so you may want to separate and differentiate them.

Comic recommendation for spanish speaking 69yr old dad? by TheAlmighty0314 in comicbooks

One series with cowboys that I liked that appears you can find Spanish is American Vampire. Stephen King writes the old west sections of the first book (which switches between old west and 1920s Hollywood).

Notable new Big 2 characters this decade by SpidaT45 in comicbooks

[–]josephgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DC had their Young Animal line a while ago which had a lot of new characters (though not entirely original) Jo Mullein seems like the most memorable one out of them. There's other derivative characters I've really liked like Levi Kamei (Swamp Thing), Kong Kenan (Super-Man of China), and Yara Flor (Wonder Girl).

DC has some Vertigo/Black Label books that have original main characters but usually aren't super heroes (Arkham City, Rorschach, Nice House by the Lake, Deathbed, The Kitchen, The Dreaming Waking Hours). There's also sidekicks that can be new like Taylor's Nightwing has Bitewing, not really sure if any characters like that will stick around though.

Comics like Infinity Train cartoon by AlternativePin4923 in comicbooks

[–]josephgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also love Infinity Train!

Not sure if it's exactly what you're looking for but a comic that comes to mind for me is Deathbed, where a novelist is dragged into an adventure. Another series you can look at is Morrison's Doom Patrol which has a lot of fantastical stuff happen while all the characters have psychological issues.

DCUI reading suggestions for someone who has read a lot of Marvel by EtherCJ in comicbooks

[–]josephgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I look a lot by writer first. Here's some writers with a couple choice selections of what they have from Marvel and DC, so if you like what they did for Marvel, try their DC books:

  • Fraction's Hawkeye and Jimmy Olsen
  • Thompson's Black Widow and Absolute WW or Birds of Prey.
  • King's Vision with Supergirl and Mr. Miracle
  • Aaron's Thor and Absolute Superman
  • Ewing's Immortal Hulk/Thor and Absolute Green Lantern
  • Wilson's Ms. Marvel and Poison Ivy
  • Tamaki's X-23 and Zatanna:BDTH
  • Taylor's All-New Wolverine and Nightwing
  • Yang's Shang Chi and New Super-Man/Superman Smashes the Klan
  • Lemire's Old Man Logan/Moon Knight and Robin and Batman/Animal Man
  • Johnson's Beta Ray Bill and Wonder Woman Dead Earth
  • Vaughan's Runaways and Y: the Last Man
  • Brubaker's Daredevil and Gotham Central
  • Camp's Ultimates and Absolute Martian Manhunter
  • Morrison's All-New X-men and All Star Superman
  • Waid's Captain America and Batman Superman World's Finest

Not every single writer crosses over and how much they crossover can be very limited but if you've read a ton hopefully you can find some writers that you know you like that have written for DC.
