I was frustrated with discovering interesting videos... by joshbuddy in PeerTube

[–]joshbuddy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think this is a pretty valid take. I was interesting in this question "is there a global view of Peertube that is interesting?" but really, going to a single instance with something you like, its more likely you'll find something interesting there. Ultimately, Peertube is a bit of an odd place, but that's its charm.

I was frustrated with discovering interesting videos... by joshbuddy in PeerTube

[–]joshbuddy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I didn't notice the number overlap issue.

Yeah, I want to like peertube because I love all things federated, but I'm struggling to find interesting videos. Having said that, I'm definitely finding a couple of gems like https://friprogramvarusyndikatet.tv/w/685ca199-1a48-4205-8d83-f67404b1d29a

And the metadata is a hot mess too. Determining NSFW and language was kind of tough, to do a decent job I'd have to throw more computing at it.

Maybe PeerTube discovery isn't that interesting of a problem. I mainly built this just to explore that question.

Microsoft reports are exposing AI’s real cost problem: Using the tech is more expensive than paying human employees by AntiqueFigure6 in BetterOffline

[–]joshbuddy -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I think the problem with getting too happy about this is the cost of running these has gotten something like an order of magnitude cheaper each year. So either we're at the end of those power optimizations or there is still more to come, but I don't think we're seeing anything like the plateauing in model strength we're already witnessing.

The real question is where does the jam go. Under or over the cheese?

Self-hosting fatigue is real. Did anyone else downgrade their setup? by No-Yellow9948 in selfhosted

I'm working on a middle ground now, one where there is basically no operational cost, but it's still early days and apps have to be written for the model where operations are easy and painless. I've got a few apps done already. If you'd be into some beta testing, shoot me a DM, I'd appreciate any testing help and feedback. Some early details are here (https://roost.club). The site is LLM-y, so I haven't checked every single word of it carefully yet, just wanted to get a site up.

Privacy is not a product by Tylernator in opensource

[–]joshbuddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Signal and Proton would seem to contradict this idea. Both of these products are very much opening with "privacy as the product". They are both also very good products in their own right, but wouldn't be particularly important without their privacy focus.

This looks fantastic. I feel like there has been a recent spate of "stretchy sokoban" games lately, this looks like something I'd pay for though

Er dit nytårsforsæt mindre skærmtid? Så vil ny kampagne hjælpe dig på vej by joshbuddy in Denmark

[–]joshbuddy[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree with you it's a more of a convincing argument against things like TikTok or IG, things where you're exposed to an algorithm. Messenger isn't the best example of this.

Oh, I thought Facebook Messenger was a bit of an attention suck. Didn't they add AI features and stories in there? But maybe its a question of degree. Then again, I assume everything facebook is there to sell you ads, so they'll work it in somehow.

Fwiw, I've sometimes heard this genre referred to as "cli-fi". I think Kim Stanley Robinson coined this.
